- Writer, activist and opinion-maker Sisonke Msimang shares thoughts on how she finds herself wondering, given the number of recent violent and racist incidents that have taken place in South Africa, if Nelson Mandela’s chosen path of reconciliation and forgiveness over redistribution and justice was at all helpful.
Sisonke Msimang is director of advocacy and accountability at Sonke Gender Justice and writes a column in South Africa’s Daily Maverick online newspaper. She is also one of thirteen select Aspen Institute New Voices fellows.

Significant and Relevant as well as timely
A very interesting and in my opinion a brave thing to discuss. Mandela is kind of a big deal but I do agree with most of what she has said.
Here is the thing, how many South Africans are aware of this facts? How many South Africans have watched this?
few i am shock we Africans don't watch things like this.... something else have distracted them from leaning how things work....
That is not entirely true..white people have a historical economic advantage and to compare a white man to a black man is bit unfair. If the black man was afforded the same opportunities as the white man, he would be smarter, more skilled and work harder. He also would be wealthy at some point.
Too many bantu have a below mean IQ and are mentally challenged.....

True, Nelson Mandela was a liberator not a revolutionary. All those Countries never received peace because the others like ours had and loved the outsiders, so these outsiders are basically the watchdogs for their fellows in the West, thats why the outsiders ran from Zimbabwe to here. Removing outsiders should be a continental issue, it must be a policy that all African states sign and agree to abide by and abide by!
That’s all! I don’t know why they tolerate them! I don’t even know why Mandela decided to create a rainbow nation! Really? After everything? Sometimes I wonder for these our African leaders! I wouldn’t be surprised if the west influenced that decision! It is so obvious today! These white devils will never change! Africa must decide to stay off them and find her own course! We need to detach all kinds of relationships with them and heal! They have wounded us and still do it unrepentantly still today! These our old leaders can’t help us! Africa needs new thinkers! Patriotic ones! Mandela didn’t help SA! All that struggle for nothing!

South Africa is the most unequal Country in the World as things stands, your view is obscured.
I think everyone needs to take personal responsibility in the roles that they played to result in the South Africa we have today because we are nearly 30 years out of apartheid and things have gotten worse in another 30 years South Africa will be just like Nigeria or Somalia if this continues
If there’s no equality there will never be peace. They are still peeing on our students and beating our children. There will never be peace until people take accountability. Like any other trauma , Apartheid trauma won’t vanish because apartheid is gone . It’s a generational trauma . It’s insensitive for these people to think time will heal when there’s no change . We have a new oppressor he has a melanated skin like me and that brings more trauma .
That’s because you never allowed yourselves to heal! Justice wasn’t served! Dignity wasn’t restored! Again, failure on the part of leadership! South Africa is for Africans, and it should have been taken back from the cruel whites and fully restored to the owners, and not try and build a rainbow nation. Our leaders keep amazing me in the wrong sense!
A friend of mine introduced me to TED. He told me it is based on research and ideas that are worth sharing. This talk is opinion filled. I don't get the idea.

first time i saw the lady , it was at BigDebate.., she is well spoken I believe.
I lived in the Eastern Cape since '95 after the change of government, manufactured and exported and made a very good product at a profit by the way. I brought millions of dollars into the country and employed a lot of people. I think this girl is missing the points that matter most. The problem is not really the white people and in fact perhaps just the opposite in most cases. Most but not all white S. Africans are hardworking and decent. The real problem in Southern Africa is dishonesty, theft, home and car breakins, carjackings, terrible violent crime, corruption and incompetence as well as quite a poor work ethic which is worse among black African men than women who often take work more seriously with a more positive attitude (generally). Crime got much worse in the time I was there and rapidly by the way. While there, a lot of whites emigrated to NZ, Australia, Canada and England, the loss hurt a lot, there was a significant brain drain. Drugs are a problem, AIDS is huge, promiscuity is pretty incredible. Four young black people I knew personally died of AIDS it was very hard to see that and it's still painful to think about, one girl was only 24.
I moved to Maputo more for adventure than anything else and lived with my local girlfriend for a few years, crime rose there rather quickly as well when drugs began to flow in from S. Africa via primarily (but not exclusively) Nigerian controlled criminals and it hurt Moz quickly and badly. I miss Africa very much in ways but S. Africa has become a pretty rough, it's a fact. Blaming everything on racism misses the big picture and I don't believe it's the root cause of S. Africa's deterioration. Law and order is a joke, I didn't know any black African people who didn't cheat on their mate, trust is a big weakness in dealing with just about anything. Whereas when dealing with Muslim Indians in Mozambique, I could make an arrangement and they'd come thru, S. African whites were THE glue that held most ALL business together, Chinese in Africa are mostly good to deal with as are German expats. I did clean and straight business in Africa, period.
Culturally I like Africans in a lot of ways and enjoy spending time with them day in day out but the constant need to defend against theft and never ever being able to trust financially, as I learned, wears you down.. it's a wipeout for good prosperity. Nobody local ever pays anyone back without an ordeal if at all, a huge, huge problem. Moz police try to shake you down sometimes several times in one day while driving! I'm back in Taiwan, it's so vastly different, so much more fundamentally honest, you can take commercial integrity for granted mostly and in personal issues as well. I'd like to return to Africa in the future and will but I know very well that it's a rough place, I lived like a king but most people didn't. I encountered endless jealousy about money, lifestyle and about my lovely black girlfriend. Oh well. I still love Africa but I'm not as idealistic about it, believe me, you can't be trusting and you can't expose yourself without consequence, even death. S. Africa needs a good dose of moral standards and black people need to own up to that in order to prosper. The crime is the destroyer. But it's such a beautiful, beautiful country.

I came to SA in 97 from Europe and was excited to start building a new country - turned my home into a computer school and ran that for 10 years - while we were living in the garage. SA is an amazingly beautiful place. But yes crime became worse and worse, people's lives are not getting better, and anti white stuff is getting overwhelming so we are on our way back to Europe. It doesn't look like solutions will be found soon.
If you came in South Africa after 1995 then you have no clue. Case closed.
I believe that part of the point she made was that racism is being used as a 'distraction' to such societal problems as you've mentioned.

You are seeing the after effects of years of disparities. Whites divided up Africa and treated the people like dirt. The last African country got its freedom in 1989 from European powers. Whites in many ways still control parts of Africa from behind the curtains.
Whites must go. Education is only one part of the the solution but Africans can’t have another race of people controlling their future.

If whites wanna be taken serious then they should realise how much damage they caused and come to the table to discuss how to share the land . We Africans are too quick to dismiss the atrocities of the white Nan against us! We assume they will change or will feel remorse for their sins, but that is an illusion! Our leaders forget the clear message of Kwame Nkrumah! This world will not like Africa, ever! We must realise that, and begin to love ourselves, for we only have each other! We need to recognise our wounds and start the healing process! That healing won’t come from trying to be friends with the west , thinking because we forgave them, they will change towards us! They won’t ever! The day they stop treating us the way they do, becomes the day they goes into oblivion! It is up to us Africans today, to heed the clarion call of our pan- African leaders and love ourselves!

The analogy of one spouse cheating on the other is actually irrelevant in S. Africa's history of the relationship between whites and blacks. To call it what it was, it's the oppressor group versus the oppressed. It seems that what happened is, there was lip service paid to reconciliation but the healing process was never even started. Hence the oppressed are still dealing with deep psychological wounds & trauma associated with their oppression. That requires serious spiritual, psychological, emotional work on the part of all concerned. And both sides need to be involved. There should also be reparations made by the oppressor group to the once oppressed group. That to me is common sense.
