Trying TUNISIAN food! Tunis local food and STREET FOOD tour! الغذاء التونسي

- Опубліковано 16 лют 2020
- We spent two days in Tunisia's capital of Tunis eating amazing Tunisian food and meeting super friendly locals - some let us sample their food, some gave us free makroudhs (Tunisian pastries) and some shared a giant feast with us while teaching us about Tunisian culture! As you can probably tell, the hospitality is truly amazing in Tunisia, and I am so thankful to everyone who made us feel so welcome in Tunisia!
Now, onto the food - we started our day off at a small, hole-in-the wall restaurant where a very cheerful man served us two classics: lablabi and ojja. Lablabi is a hearty chickpea stew made with harrisa (a spicy chili paste), pieces of bread, tuna and olives. A hearty and delicious start to the tour! The ojja (chicken and vegetables fried together with a lot of harissa and olive oil) may very well have been our favorite dish of this whole tour! Mopping up that caramelized chicken sitting in a pool of spicy harrisa and olive oil was just too good to be true.
After trying some awesome Tunisian tea following our first meal, we made our way to what seemed to be a pretty popular restaurant - El Baraka! Here, we tried an eggplant mix with lots of olive oil and tomatoes which we scooped up with more bread, as well as their signature grilled fish which was super smoky, with crispy skin and extremely tender and juicy meat!
On our way back to our accommodation we tried some Tunisian sweets called makroudh. They were amazing! We were also given these for free by the owners of the stand making them, we are so thankful! The Tunisian hospitality shines through here, once again!
Finally, the next day we meet up with two locals - Yassine and Yassine. Together we enjoy a giant Tunisian feast at the legendary Dar El Jeld, a restaurant a bit fancier than what we're usually used to! The interior was made in traditional Tunisian style and was stunningly beautiful. We tried a lot of food, ranging from fluffy cous cous (Tunisia's national dish), unbelievably tender lamb and stuffed phylo pastries (brik)! Everything was amazing, and on top of that, we were able to learn a lot about Tunisian culture thanks to our new friends, with whom we had a great time!

Hi I can help you if you are working on insurance, computer science, media or banking sector welcome in tunisia :)
Tunisia is one of my all time favourite Arab countries I love!!!
Friendly people, Beautiful Arabic language, diverse and cultural heritage, Beautiful views and delicious hearty food!!!
What's not to like? 🇬🇧💞🇹🇳
You are 100% correct.
Except that were not arabs.
@@duncan3998 no he isnt
@CARTHAGE TUNISIA HANNIBAL How are we arabs? were "North" Africans thats been "arabized" thats about it, we do not share any "arab" origin whatsoever only a tiny fraction of the tunisian population carries arab origin roughly 3-4%, vast majority of tunisians or any "north" africans for that matter are made up of amazigh origin with well over 70% of its population. This has been proven and validated by science/research and dna analysis done. So no were not arabs, never was never will be. Over and out.
@CARTHAGE TUNISIA HANNIBAL You are deluded and misguided my friend. Nowhere did i say that the "Amazigh" is a race, its an ethnic group that contains mixed origins, mainly from west eurasia. Secondly the definition of a "North African" is "Amazigh" in case this is unclear to you wich it seems to be. Amazigh/Imazighen are indigenous to the North African region, not the arabs. Arabs comes from the saudi peninsula and the middle eastern, this is just basic facts. The Arab invasion basically had no impact on the North African gene pool in general. As i said North Africans today are still the same people (genetic makeup) that they always been. Vast majority of "North Africans" approximately 70-80% are of Amazigh origin, this is not even up for debate, there is science and research that confirms this. So you claiming North Africans to be Arabs is false and inaccurate, and even insulting.

I've been there three years before the spring revolution and I went back five years after in 2016. It has so much of my country...( I come from a neighbor country) but the spirit there is unique too different from any other country I've been to.. N I visited many... The food itself is an addiction.. Again, I'm supposed to share some things with them but the taste there is wow. Couscous, brika, leblebi, mloukhiya, zgougou, wedhnin kadhi, plat Tunisien, keftegi, fricassée.. My mouth is watering just thinking about Tunisian food😭 guys please take it from someone who knows.. If there's any Tunisian restaurants nearby, you go n give it a try.. If not, after this Covid19 is over book a flight and enjoy Tunisia. A nice, friendly and not expensive at all (at least for us those who live in the west)
Thanks a lot madam I can say no more, u said it all, and tunisians are very kind and generous people too, the first man gave him his meal and the other guy gave him the sweets for free !
You are an honorable lady thank you , Are you algerian ?
i lived in Sousse Tunisia many years ago 1995/6, miss the people and food lol.hopefully will go back one day
So the Dish @8:40 is called "Tastira" it is basically fried vegetables (tradionally it's chilli peppers, tomatoes) + fried eggs and mixed and sliced together with two knives crossed together to obtain this texture. Tastira is served as a side dish with Fried or grilled fish.
I think I've seen a soup as well @ 9:07, and from what I saw I think it's a "Chorba Frik" a soup with barley it is way better with a dash of lemon juice.
@9:09 the "Pâté" like dish is called "Tajine" not to confuse with the moroccan Tajine. the Tunisian one is a kind of big omlet with eggs and a variety of other componants like shredded chiken, grated cheese, vegetables etc. and like the soup the dash of lemon enhances the taste of it.
@ 14:19 this is one of the most liked and genuine tunisian dishes it is called "Slata Meshwia" litteraly "grilled salad" and it is composed of Grilled chilli pepper, grilled tomatoes, grilled garlic, that give it this typical somked flavour all mixed together and slided with two knives (like the Tastira) served with tuna on the top, hard boiled eggs cut in half, olives and a good dizzle of olive oil to make the spiciness of the pepper less strong.
@ 14:33 : This Is "Harissa Arbi" it is smoked red Chilli with garlic and other spices, it is served as it is as a starter or it is used for cooking.
:)
4:18 jacket on... 4:20 jacket off.. i know how you felt after eating spicy lablabi.. it makes you worm... lol... nice to have you in Tunisia brother

Indeed, I think it looked like middle eastern appetizer Baba Ghanouch thats why he confused it..
Yosr Ammar actually it was kafteji not salade mechweya
I was also just about to explain this same detail. Slata mechwiya is amazing. We make it at my home here in the States, but nothing beats the vegetables and olive oil used in Tunisia.

You're so respectful ❤️ It has been one year that I have not seen my beautiful country you made me miss our food so much😍
Where abouts are you Imen?
Just for the record. The dish you're referring to as containing eggplant, is called s'lata méchouïa ( grilled salad) it is composed of grilled bell peppers, chilly peppers, onions and tomato. Olive oil, garlic and probably cumin. Eggplants are part of the Tunisian food culture, thery're used in many other dishes though, Welcome to Tunisia the land of the harissa people. By the way, concerning harissa, it is a north african condiment, the recipes varies from country to country but only Tunisians and the eastern part of Algeria uses it on almost every thing, save for dessert, but I must confess that I found an ice cream joint where it is used to prepare a wonderful harissa ice cream. Tunisian harissa is copied all over the world, but make no mistake, the original from Tunisia is still holding the upper hand. The Smokey flavour is obtained by drying the chillies exposed to the sun, crushed when it's done, several weeks later, then mived with cumin, garlic, coriander and salt. I hope you enjoyed your visit to my country. Please come again and god bless you both.
The dish with eggplant is Keftaji not slata mechouia..
@Yesmina Bzn So it's North african 🤷
Lilya WoopWoop It’s Tunisian .
Ofc anything from Tunisian Algeria or Morocco falls under NA category .
But it is Tunisian.
