I like modern Tetris more. Especially TGM. It's just overwhelmingly impressive to see people lock in pieces at over 200 PPM.
Well, then, that explains why my brain exploded the first time I saw a Tetris 99 video. I played the classic version when I was young (Win 95 era), and had NO IDEA those T and L could make those magic moves! Turns out, they can't in the version I know.

2:35 I'll have to correct you there. Its slightly less likely (1/7 times) to get a piece you previously got again. This means that the first piece IS truly 1/7 but say you get an O, then the probability to get an O as the next piece is 1/49 where the probability for every other piece is 8/49. Not too sure if the numbers are correct but I remember something like this.
If you are interested in how this works: The game picks one of 8 options with option 8 being reroll (8 options because easier to code), if you get the same option (e.g. T) as last time it rerolls too, but now with the option (e.g. T) being availaible

The probabilities are actually slightly off from this because of quirks in the pseudo-random number generation. A guy named fractal161 made a really good PDF on it, he’s is the CTM discord if you want to read it
I think the first piece treats the previous one as a T, so the first piece isn’t a true 1/7, it has a lower possibility to get a T (not sure tho)
Yeah, I’m a tetris player. Along with that I know many things that most don’t know about these communities. Classic isn’t part of the actual tetris community and I’m not saying that because I don’t like them. I’m saying that based off of years of research.

Classic is its own distinct community
There's a good reason to why Classic Tetris is more pure. Your decision matters a lot more, and pieces' falling speed truly has a significant effect on your gameplay.

I noticed you group modern Tetris with TGM footage. I’m sure you know, but figured I’d say TGM has a style that isn’t sorely modern but isn’t classic either despite the speed differences. I wouldn’t group TGM and modern Tetris in exactly the same boat.
Tetris 99 was what really introduced me to Tetris so it’s my favorite. I’ve never played classic

Manuel Salokangas yeah I like all the consoles. My brother has an Xbox one which I used to play a lot. I mainly use my PS4 for kingdom hearts and persona and my switch for everything else. They’re a good combo
Jonas also plays Tetris 99 from time to time on his twitch and he is amazing and that game too.
Before I watched this video I never understood why classic tetris was considered as skillful or even more skilled than modern tetris when it seemed so slow. All the answers I found were people saying it was because of no holding and didn't mention anything about the instant locking.
There is a similar comparison with you and other tetris players as well. When I first watched you play I wasn't very impressed because I thought you werent as fast or "flashy" as other top players and thought you were making a lot of mistakes when in reality you were setting up for sick T spins every time.
I really appreciate the audio correction you did when talking about the piece preview, I know many creators will simply put in some visual correction. I can’t wait to see your production quality go up with your success, and hope you invest more into yourself and settle more naturally into this role.
I still prefer the old type Tetris. It was so much fun being able to go to the Portland expo centre year after year and seeing so many people like Jeff, Jonas, and well Joseph. Kind of odd how people with a j are good at Tetris but anyways. That got me inspired to try to compete and I did. Sure not at level 18 but i did qualify for level 12 and 15. Not sure if 12 even is a thing anymore but oh well. I played modern Tetris and I feel like my hand is being held. Played level 15 in modern Tetris and my store instantly went up. I could slide those pieces like a stripper pole but on the original your piece is pretty much locked in place. You have to be precise. Oh and that randomised pieces for old Tetris is brutal. Holy cow I waited 30 times just to get an I piece. At the end of the day that's my preferred Tetris. And it's just Tetris so if this upsets you, you might need to rethink somethings in life. Why did he say t spins were new? That's old. You can do all that spinning in the old ones. It's kind of interesting how they are naming the tournaments after Jonas because of his death. What a fun guy to be around.

You bundled TGM in with modern/Guideline Tetris, while, in reality, TGM is as different from NES Tetris as it is different from Tetris Worlds.
*Differences from both Classic and Guideline:*
• TGM uses Arika Rotation System, which has floor and wall kicks, although the pieces rotate in a way that they stay grounded on a flat floor.
• TGM colors pieces differently from Guideline, the colors being inherited from SEGA’s version.
• TGM has sections each with unique challenges, and a “COOL!” and “REGRET” judgment that I have no time or expertise to get into. Both Classic and Guideline mainly focus on plain old Marathon, although other modes exist (e.g. Type B in Classic, and Sprint, Ultra, or PVP in Guideline).
*Differences from Classic:*
• TGM has lock delay and wall kicks, like Guideline does.
*Differences from Guideline:*
• TGM doesn’t reward T-spins with a score bonus. TGM3 says “T-SPIN!” if the last move before clearing lines with a T was a rotation, but that includes way more clears than even T-spin Mini in Guideline.

The thing I like about modern Tetris is the interaction between players. When one player attacks, the other player has to defend or suffer the consquences. In that sense, it's like most sports, like football and basketball. In Modern Tetris, you're not really playing against each other. You might was well play a few games and compare the results afterwards to determine who won. You don't change strategy based on what your opponent does.
That said, I've become ahuge fan of the champion (no spoilers here) of Classic Tetris while I'm already kinda burned out from seeing to much Wumbo.
This is somewhat inaccurate. In competitive classic Tetris, players constantly change their aggression levels in response to the score differential between themselves and their opponent. More aggression is more dangerous, but it can be more rewarding (for points).
Andrew Davis That's true, but the same idea of playing more aggressive when you're behind can be applied to just about any competitive game, bowling, darts, but that's hardly player-to-player interaction as much as it is adjusting your strategy based on how well you're doing.

The classic strategy of "just build well" actually does work in Tetris 99, albeit mostly in conjunction with other modern features (especially 99's aggro bonus).

I'm rather slow though, but I have about 10% winrate by mixing T-spins and Tetrises.
Tetris 99 isn't representative of all of modern Tetris. Check out some TETR.IO tournaments
One thing you could stress, is that NES tetris and TGM are single player games with mechanics designed for a single player challenge.
Modern tetris is usually designed for multiplayer experience (Tetris Friends, Tetris DS, Tetris 99, Puyo Puyo Tetris etc). The 7-bag, the rotation system, the super forgiving lock delays, the hold function, all of this makes the single player much much easier, to the point its boring compared to the high octane, stress situations the arcade games give to us.
i do remember playing a version of Tetris for classic Windows 5, which was part of the Best of Windows Entertainment Pack (BOWEP for short). that version way back then was most likely the first variant to introduce hard drops, which was the only way to drop pieces. there was no speed drop/hard drop variant. whole game used just the arrow keys, where up rotated and down was your hard drop. i played it so much it became my preferred version over any others
Not sure how comfortable I am with TGM tetris being put in the "Modern Tetris" bucket. Those games are really their own transitional generation, with quality of life improvements being added in as the series evolved. The early games didn't even use a bag randomizer and had pretty strict wall kicking rules. And the locking/rotation rules, even in TGM3, are far more strict than in modern Tetris.
Respects to you. I am in love with Tetris and really want to try and do some tournaments or something in both classic and modern Tetris. I have been making tons of improvements and have been practicing high speed Tetris and of course Tetris 99
I remember the Nintendo World Championship 2017 when they introduced Tetris as a round and all these kids under 10 had no freaking clue what they were doing.

I think I personally like classic tetris more, even though I suck equally at both variants lol. I feel it’s a more authentic puzzle game, whereas modern tetris is more a strategy game once you master it. Or at least that’s what it looks like from here :P

I do believe the flexibility of the modern Tetris games makes it more fun than the classic Tetris. There's a whole load of strategies imbued in such a simple puzzle game.
I grew up on classic Tetris, and I hadn’t played any other Tetris game until Tetris 99 came out. I’m really enjoying it, and I’m getting better (12 wins so far out of ~240 games), but I’m still a relatively slow builder, and I just can’t get the hang of those t-spins.
One interesting note is that the original soviet version of tetris did actually have hard drops, so it's not a purely modern feature.
One more thing to note, the pieces in Nes Tetris spawn upside down compared to modern games like Puyo Puyo Tetris and Tetris99, so when i tried Nes for the first time it completely screwed up my muscle memory

My "classic Tetris" is actually the (ultimately unlicensed) 1987 PC version (top-left in the thumbnail montage). WE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE SOFT DROP, only hard drops.
I grew up playing classic, and *vastly* prefer modern due to the crazy tech and set ups that classic simply doesn't have.
I see the value in classic Tetris but it feels like going from Street Fighter (fundamentals, slower pace) to Marvel Vs Capcom (incredibly fast paced and chaotic)
More like Tekken (slow, big, powerful moves) vs something like Touhou fighters (Bullet-Hell fighting game)
I see it as like like Smash 64 (slower, fewer options, but harder ariels, and more balanced roster)
And Smash Melee (much faster, much more tech skill, much more to learn, much more room for creativity, much more of most things)
My first Tetris game was Tetris Axis and literally a few days after I got it I got the original Game Boy Tetris on the Virtual Console, so I like both versions of Tetris.
(I don't know why I felt the need to get Game Boy Tetris right after getting Axis. I mean, I like retro games and all, but as a brand new Tetris player those two games should have seemed identical...)
Classic Tetris is more interesting to me. The elegance in making sure your board has to be ready for any piece at any time is really neat

Currently I'm playing the Original Sega tetris a lot, because it's a nice mix of both playstyles.
If you have a dreamcast, tetris comes with a modern and a classic mode, pretty useful for switching games without changing disk (for those who play both styles)
I love them both. Tetris is second only to Street Fighter for my favorite franchise of all time. And even then, it's a lot more exciting overall today barring certain excellent Capcom Pro Tour events. World championship aside, the last two Classic Tetris Monthly battles between Jospeh and Koryan were astonishing, and what you folks are doing with Tetris 99 is awesome. The biggest problem with Classic Tetris for me though, despite loving it the instant it hit the NES, is how frustrating it is to get the right equipment to play at a high level today (NES, CRT, good original controllers, the physical space, etc.). It's a barrier for many and emulators just don't cut it (although they're great for experimenting and figuring out if you like it). In a way it's also a litmus test because you know the people you see at the CTWC are at least more serious than not. Even still, modern Tetris is a lot more accessible and even with the growing popularity (resurgence, I should say) of Classic it's the first place many will turn. Anyway, thanks for a great post.

@@matheuscabral9618 It's about the same price (a NES with controllers and Tetris is around $160-200) and just about any cheap laptop or desktop will run Jstris or Tetrio. But like... most people already own a computer, and there's more people playing modern on those aforementioned platforms, making it way more accessible for a brand new player.

I honestly like both variants old and new. due to me owning a collection of Tetris variants and being able to play almost all of the variants and one-offs of Tetris (tetrisphere, wordtris, bombblis). I prefer the older on handheld ie dx and Tetris but for the new versions i like them on pc ie Tetris friends, cultris, jstris.
Tetris DX has the best Classic Tetris experience in my opinion, it controls smoother an faster, but keeping that classic vibe
I grew up on classic Tetris and I'm pretty decent at that. I used to play the hell out of GB original Tetris and Tetris Plus. I still own my GB Classic Tetris. I prefer being able to hold a piece though.

The original DOS Tetris should get some kind of a championship cult following imo. The one that was made by both Pajitnov and Garisimov. I've been playing it lately and it's a very hard Tetris game.
The rules and scoring system is virtually the exact same in original Tetris as it is in NES Tetris. Tournaments use NES mostly so they can easily hook it up to a large screen, and so the audience has some pretty colors to look at

Where does Tetris DX fit in?
I prefer modern tetris mostly because of the new rotation system and the way pieces are generated. Classic tetris is still cool, but modern tetris is just way more fun for me. Maybe I'm biased because of how new I am to the scene though, haha.
I want something more like classic Tetris (more about accuracy, reactionary, and straight Tetris’) but I prefer the coloring, consecutive line clears, and how you can turn a piece a little before it actually sticks. So here I am in this awkward middle ground

I used to play a ton of Tetris on Gameboy, but since I got introduced to the modern tetris with Tetris DS, there's no going back. Classic Tetris is simply clumsy
It really is though. Playing the game shouldn't be completely locked behind knowing how to preserve DAS or hypertap. It might be challenging, but it's not in the spirit of the game.
Andrew Prahst hypertapping and das maintenance don’t take the spirit out of the game because of the vast levels where you can have non fully charged das or be regular at tapping and this won’t take the spirit of the game
John Moore When I said "completely locked," I meant for competitive play. In tournaments, you're either required to start at 18, or are severely disadvantaged if you don't.
On the other hand, there isn't really any defining technique completely necessary to play competitive modern.
Andrew Prahst in modern Tetris as far as I know you need to ether build extremely fast to make t spins as fast as possible or make a huge 2-4 wide well and spam combos as fast as possible
@@johnmoore4185 The key is that there are many different ways to play. There are techniques that may aid you significantly, but none of them are completely necessary to play. Some players choose to try super fast and aggressive, and others play a more defensive and reactive style. Even if a player is faster than you, you can still beat them by playing timing attacks smartly and keeping your field clean. There is controversy over 4 widing, which is why some versions like Tetr.io have nerfed it, but it isn't absolutely necessary to play. Some players like, Doremy, blatantly refuse to 4wide whenever they can, instead focusing on keeping the back to back bonus and attacking the opponent before they can get a big enough combo going. After all, combos must be done all at once so have less flexibility than T- spins.
Not even talking about Perfect Clears, there are so many different techniques for setting up different combinations of Tetris's and T-spins and combos that you could write a book on them. But virtually none of them are absolutely essential, so players can use their own style.
There's so so much that goes into just the act of T spinning that it's impossible to explain in just a few messages, but the point is that it isn't necessary to know it all.

You can t spin in classic Tetris if you time it right, but because of its instant stick, it’s not really possible at higher levels. Of course performing t spins doesn’t give you any bonuses or special notifications though

@@defaultusername1145 Yeah yeah, I was being hyperbolic, it isn't that easy. But with muscle memory, and being able to see when it will be in advance, it's far from impossible.
Try watching this video and tapping your finger at the right time. After some practice, you can get it down since you know the timing.
I'm not claiming to be good at level 19 in general though. That shit destroys me.

Colton Moore I disagree. In newer Smash Bros games, there's a technique that's also a 2-frame window, appropriately named the 2-frame punish. When players get that, commentators don't even always comment on it, because pro players are expected to have the timing down. That's often on top of their opponent trying to mix up the timing on them.
Again, not saying it's easy, I'd be lying if I told you I could get it consistently, but you definitely can just get it down with practice.

About the point you made about level 29. What strategy will work on this level depends how high your stack is when you transition. Delayed Auto Shift or DAS in my experience is only usable when your stack is around eight or lower. Once you hit around 12 lines high on level 29. DAS by itself becomes very ineffective. If you know when to hit the button before hand to DAS Charge you can increase this limitation slightly. Delay Auto Shift suffers from the 3/10th of a second delay before the piece moves. Which on level 29 this will make moving your pieces all the way to the right or left nearly impossible since your 65/100th of a second time to react is further decreased to 35/100th. On the other hand, tapping does not have the 3/10th of a second weakness of DAS. Though, you are limited to the speed you can tap at. Slower tapping is slower than DAS and DAS with DAS Charging is faster than either of these. While Hypertapping is faster than DAS Charging.

@@Spunney I am a DAS player and just managed to get a level 29 line piece into my left well in the Tetris and Dr. Mario version of Tetris. I have played NES Tetris studying the pros. I would not be able to pull this off in NES Tetris at my speed. Though, Advanced DAS can get up to around 17+ taps per second. My highest scores are around 550,000 in SNES and around 480,000 in NES Tetris.

@@Spunney I am playing on a 1987 NTSC Nintendo Cartridge; it says Official Nintendo on the logo; the PAL version says Original Nintendo. My level 29 was on Tetris and Dr. Mario for the Super Nintendo. I even managed to get to level 30 twice on that version. If I had to guess, I would say level 19 of the Nintendo NTSC Tetris is equal to level 24 of the Super Nintendo Version of Tetris.

I prefer modern Tetris because of the PvP aspect, especially coming from Puyo. Also, I used to think Tetris as inferior to and more boring than Puyo - until I learned about T-Spins/Builds.

What do you mean exactly? Like how was the first Tetris game scored? Or how are classic Tetris tournament matches determined?

spaceman00 Tetris pieces were chosen completely at random, clearing likes gives you points, filling your screen up so you can't place any more makes the game end.
At level 0, single line clears are worth 40 points, doubles are worth 100, triples are worth 300, and Quadruples (Tetrises) are worth 1200.
Once you clear enough lines, your level will rise, which makes the pieces fall faster, and scores are multiplied so that 100 points at lvl 0 is worth 500 5 levels later, and 1300 13 levels later ect.
You can choose to start at a high level so that your points are high right from the get-go, and you won't level up until you get the number of lines usually required to get to that next level. At a some point, the pieces become physically impossible to move to the edge of the board in time and it's a forced game over. Maximum amount of points the game can normally track is 999,999
Now, the first version of Tetris was on Gameboy, and what is played in tournaments is on NES. But the rules are essentially the same, so it doesn't really matter.
As for the tournament rules, basically, two people start playing at the same time, and whoever has the greater score that round, wins that round (so even if someone tops out first, they can still win if they have more points). They play first to three like that and the winner moves on.
At lower levels, the two players will get pieces in different orders and they can choose their starting level.
In grand finals, both players get the same randomization seed and they must start at level 18, which is the second highest level you can choose to start from.

The first version was made for Electronika 60, the rules you posted are the nes ones or the Electronika 60 one?
@@exedeath Wow, I actually didn't know that version existed. That art style is used in TGM3 Shirase mode at level 1000, so now I know where it comes from.
I looked into it, and apparently, there, the points are awarded per Tetromino placed, with a bonus for hard dropping early and one for playing without piece preview.
That's completely different from any version I've played. Yes, I was talking about the early Nintendo variants

Using a glitch, you might even be able to "Tetris" with a T block just like what is done with the L block in the tool assisted speedrun.
I'm not an expert on how that works though.

Personally I'm more of a fan of modern Tetris. I grew up with modern Tetris and honestly it's been perfected over the years. I think classic Tetris is incredibly impressive to watch and it takes a lot of skill but because of the points mentioned in the video, the game is heavily flawed. Modern Tetris takes the hardcore features of classic Tetris and dumbs it down but it also gives players more of a chance to do sone crazy strats and allows for different playstyles
classic tetris isn’t heavily flawed. It’s just not forgiving and if it had 7 bag it probably would be too easy and not as fun
NES Tetris is not the only classic Tetris game and the other games from that era are largely different in many ways. What about Sega Tetris or Atari Tetris? You even have Tengen Tetris and Tetris 2 on the thumbnail, but only talk about the NES game where the lock delay is crazy short and the DAS is really unforgiving.
Before Tetris on Gameboy, many Tetris games didn’t even have two rotation directions. Some older Tetris games weren’t even focused on just survival, but actually were focused on how many lines you’ve completed.
I think you should maybe rerelease this video or at least change the title.
1 year late but it’s because nes Tetris is the only classic Tetris game that actually has a competitive scene unlike modern which has many different games played competitively
@@defaultusername1145 The thumbnail is misleading. It has Tengen Tetris and Tetris 2 in the 'Classic Tetris' pile. These games are not talked about at all during the video, even though they have their own unique Tetris mechanics and existed before the Tetris Company came up with the Super Rotation System. If the video wants to only talk about Nes Tetris mechanics, fine. But then change the thumbnail and maybe even the title of the video.

Actually hard drop appeard in the very first version of tetris... Earliest versions of tetris only had hard drop and not soft drop 😎

Microblizz has maxed out in classic Tetris, but I'd like to see Joseph get a sub 17 sprint.
Level 19 is challenging, but not as challenging as TGM3 Shirase mode
Modern Tetris matches demand you pay attention to your opponent and time your attacks while keeping at top speed and utilizing your knowledge of setups to apply to randomly generated garbage. You have to know when to accept garbage or cancel it, you have to decide whether to go for a b2b or just downstack, and you have to know not just what where pieces fit, but which places licenses can be placed in with the fewest inputs.
On the contrary, Classic Tetris can essentially just be "solved" by using a turbo controller and knowing how to burn unwanted pieces in a well.
I respect Classic Tetris players too, but I think it's wrong to say they're equal.
Andrew Prahst I disagree with saying that you can burn unwanted pieces in a well in nes tetris you need to pay attention to where you are able to move a piece on the stack in classic Tetris there is a constant juggling act when you are playing on 19 if you use das then you need to pay attention to the next box because you need to move the piece as soon as it comes in to keep it charged let go of the piece where you want it then move your finger at the perfect time (a 6 frame window 1/10th of a second) to keep it charged on the next piece but not misdrop your current piece and you always need to know where your piece is able to go in your stack before it would hang

While think DAS preservation is an interesting concept, I don't think it embodies the core spirit of Tetris, and I don't think it is fundamentally more challenging than the combined techniques and strategies that go into any variant of modern Tetris.
I don't understand how you can "disagree" with the idea that you can burn unwanted pieces in a well. That's basic NES strategy.
Andrew Prahst yes you can all I’m saying is that there’s more to nes Tetris to that I don’t know how to hyper tap I’ve tried and to see players able to tap at speeds of 1 in 4 frames and me being a classic Tetris player I don’t believe that having non completely random piece sets, able to move a piece when it’s on the ground and able to hold a piece for future use I don’t believe that embodies the core of tetris
@@johnmoore4185 I can press a button around 10 times a second, but I find it pretty tiring to do for an entire game. That's why I'm mostly a DAS player.
Piece randomness makes it hard to play consistently, and it could lead to matches won or lost for reasons other than skill difference. I believe RNG should be minimized in competitive games. I will say it is much better when both players get the same seed like they do in CTWC though.
Moving pieces on the ground is something that basically doesn't come into play at all in competitive matches. In solo play, it comes in tandem with instant gravity, and the ground time is reduced as levels increase, so it essentially becomes the same as high levels in NES, but it never becomes impossible, and it never requires techniques like hyper-tapping to continue.
Holding is roughly in the same boat as the bag randomizer, but holding is also a double-edged sword in modern Tetris, because it wastes time. That's why the fastest players hardly use it at all. But without it, they wouldn't have the option of going for half the setups they do, and the overall creativity involved in the game is reduced. Lack of creative expression in NES Tetris is one of my biggest problems with it.
It's also not as if modern Tetris players need a bag randomizer and hold pieces. In fact, some modern games, like Cultris II, don't have those things at all, and are still played much faster than Classic Tetris is. That game in particular actually adds additional randomness in the form of garbage, a form of player to player reaction absent from Classic. Andrew Prahst in nes Tetris there is a large creative element in building because your movement strategy isn’t everything in what makes you a better player you see players like jake who tend to have a huge stacks and rarely attempt to burn lines but you also see players like Jonas and batfoy who can fix misdrops in very few burned lines and the biggest creative thing is the way you hold the controller this is most seen in the Danqz vs Joseph in the ctwc where Joseph taps with his right thumb by moving it over to d pad but danqz holds his controller vertical so he always has his right hand on the d pad and then you have other player hyper tap using there middle and index finger so I don’t think it’s ok to say a certain version is better then another

All modern versions of tetris including tetris attack,tetris blast and tetris are fake , they have little or nothing to do with tetris, how more misleading could the worth tetris in a title ever be?
And how many versions could be ever made? you got tetris this & tetris that ,in style A or style B, then you got sony tetris,nintendo tetris, sega tetris etc,,does it really make sense,

Not really fake honestly. They are still made by the company of Tetris they just have their own spin on things. And by the way, a Tetris master worked on a few modes for Tetris effect for the ps4 and they are pretty fu'n mate.
they aren’t fake tetrises they are just different, your argument is very dumb, it’s like saying nintendo should stop doing mario games because the original is the best and the new are fake. There are several version of tetris so you play your favorite one. Also I don’t know if you know how humans work you don’t born owning tetris. and btw tengen tetris sucks, the maximum speed is too slow
