She appeared like she didn’t understand why Timothée quoted that line to answer the question. The use of that quote was correct. The woman who asked the question was surprised with that answer.

The woman who said “jam” sounded really like “German”(with dropped “r”) so Timothée understood it as “German” so he said he didn’t know about it(jam). So when told again he repeated it as “jam”(with letter “a” emphasized as “j -aaa-m”, him being a New Yorker is how that word is pronounced.
yea but it's also weird that as a new yorker he didn't get it cuz us kids who grew up in nyc are used to so many ppl from many different backgrounds so having a different accent is normal to us
