my frost protection system is costing a fortune. How do I adjust the temperature? the boiler is in the outhouse with pipe thermostat set at 10 degrees. The boiler is turning on almost continuously. This is a conventional boiler.

Hi Chris I just had a similar question re the boiler on for long periods, unfortunately only UK installers not only sticking boilers in unheated areas but NOT providing frost protection as required.
Only boilers with factory fitted protection can go there normally 7/8C, the installer HAS to fit another frost stat 5C and a pipe stat on the return 25C also 2 bottles of FERNOX antifreeze never done!!! The pipes must have 22mm lagging + boxed in where possible.
The owner will always have very high bills because its a long way from the taps /cylinder. As I recommend, if you can rip the WHOLE lot out start again find a factory recommend combi person get 3 quotes who lives the nearest, use their controls for lower running cost.
Thanks for asking, take care, George staszak 👍

Hi. Great video thanks. I have a Main Eco combi boiler fitted in an out house and in the recent cold weather have noticed the radiators heating up with no schedule programmed and the boiler controller/thermostat set to off. Assuming this is the frost protection, I keep reading that this should only heat the water in the boiler and not the radiators but your video suggests the radiators would heat up with the frost protection activated which appears to be happening to me. Is this right? I wonder if I dont have a pipe stat fitted? I'll have to check.

Dear Tudes 24, thanks for asking, there are 2 types of Frost Stat, one comes with the boiler always with the best model, and one the installers HAS to fit, it's compulsory because some boilers with FS do not open valves, only protect it's self, not good.
If an installer fitted and is set to "5" C and a pipe stat on the return set to 25C thus the system will not run non stop for weeks and the rads do not over heat. Very simple often not done by installers which is sad.
ANY boiler in an unheated location MUST have 🤩👍 both, boilers without factory FS must NOT be fitted in an unheated location, but are often done, which cancels the guarantee. Hope that helps, take care, George

@@mrcombiBedford Thanks for replying George 🙂. I've put my coat on and looked and there is a honeywell external frost stat. I don't think there is a pipe stat so that could be it then. One final question which I'm sure is a thicko question. If the pipe stat is fitted and set to say 25° how does the central heating work when I actually want the heating on? Thanks 😃

It's a very good question often asked, First get that pipe stat fitted yesterday! That will lower your fuel bill, every system must have an OFF stat. Have a look at my BOILER IN LOFT which covers unheated areas. Your answer: As the FS switches ON at 5C it gets a feed from the Live terminal so 247, When the clock at 7am. starts the ROOM stat is in charge until 11pm. then if frost stat is still below 5C the heating WILL stay ON until 7am this will repeat untill the unheated area is 7C the FS will switch OFF which could be week or MONTHS that's why a pipe stat is compulsory. I have a new video this weekend about Room Stats in a HALL, please watch subscribe and enjoy. take care George Staszak 😃👍@@tudes2421

@@mrcombiBedford Thanks so much for your replies 👍. I haven't got a schedule, I just set the room thermostat as and when I want the heating on. Are we saying then that the room thermostat has priority over the frost stat? Thanks George.

Yes always, the FS job is to protect only the BOILER from freezing and exploding, once the normal heating starts at 7am there is no danged but after 11pm and over night reverts to FS control. isn't that brilliant a pity most installers won't do this REQUIRED control, regards George👍

Thank you for your interesting video. In my bungalow we have a balanced flue boiler in the loft and a Y plan set up. In cold weather the frost stat fires up the boiler at around 10c even though the stat is set at 5c. In the past this warmed the radiators. But now we have the Honeywell evohome system, so now only the bathroom towel rail heats and the radiators remain cold. On the face of it this seems to be an improvement, but my concern is that the pipes for flow and return from the radiators, which are running through the loft, are no longer being warmed. Is this a problem?
    Is there a solution?
I realise now that we don’t have a pipe stat either so will need to address that.

Hi Jill, thanks for asking, lots wrong, only boilers fitted with factory fitted frost protection can be installed in a unheated area, since 1970 the installer MUST also fit a separate one to protect the pipes, from 2000 antifreeze MUST be included.
A Y Plan is only for small systems less than 10 KWs of rads many more 2 Zone S Plan, "evohome" is fantastic love it, but not in a small system where the bills are so low
      the savings are small.
A balanced flue sounds its over 20 years old, your controls / cylinder must be in a cupboard, I would rip the lot out put a 30KW combi there and start saving, remember 2 power flush don't want old sludge in the new boiler.
Re loft pipes, all need 22mm lagging plus 300mm of roof insulation on top.
Re frost stat as my vid shows, set at 5C 300 from the boiler top sideways the pipe stat on the return pipe 25C (off switch)
Re circulation, ALL and EVERY system MUST have an AUTO - BY PASS a requirement from every controls firm (nothing to do with the boiler firm) most UK installers don't do this. Hope this helps, George Staszak 👍

@@mrcombiBedford Thank you so much for your very comprehensive and quick reply. We have a lot to think about. Your analysis is quite correct, the boiler is 30 years old (glow worm hideaway70). It has been fantastic, but now it must go. To make matters worse our hot water tank is in the loft too. We had been hanging on thinking we should go straight to an air source heat pump.

@@jillbanks6825 My opinion is keep well away from Air C unless you have £20K+ to spend, big ELX bills coz the 2 fans run 247 and go noisy after 2 years, DO NOT listen to their hype. As I said many times, all the firms make brilliant combies, use their SMART controls in a cupboard near sink / bath. Balancing TRVs except the lounge.
Rip all the system out, rads pipes the LOT, start again with a 2023 lean & green system. Get 3 quotes from installers from a factory web site to get a 10 year plus guarantee. Good luck, george 🙌
