  • Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson talks to Ari Melber about applying a “cosmic perspective” to many current problems on earth, drawing on his new book, "Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization." Tyson also discusses the difference between personal and religious “truths,” and the kind of objective truth that undergirds science and valid policy making. This digital exclusive is a full interview with Tyson. Excerpts aired on "The Beat with Ari Melber" on MSNBC.

It was my 7th year of grade school where I had a science teacher who tested us (his students) on the scientific method after lengthy lessons on the subject. It has stuck with me my entire life. This subject was revisited again in our ninth grade science class, just to be sure we got it the first time. That lesson is lost I think in public schools these days.

@@gryjffrs We're on a slippery slope... A hundred (probably sooner) years from now, Chrisitanity is going to be as extreme in some places as the Islamic interpretation of the Taliban. And America is making huge steps at being the catalyst in that process. The conservatives in America are really starting to get extreme. And not because of faith, but because of "the science" that is hurting their wallets. We are in a fase where there are drastic steps being made and planned because of climate change. Debunking and discrediting everything "science" works for them, and keeps them rich. Religion is just one of the sticks they are hitting with, and that stick is getting bigger and bigger.

@@gryjffrs Absolutely. Many of those states are in the South and Midwest. Many students go to religious school where evolution is never mentioned or creationism is taught as if it were legitimate science. Even in the public schools evolution is sometimes omitted entirely, is taught poorly, or is placed at the end of textbooks where the class is unlikely to get to it before the end of the semester. College-trained teachers or even some professors are afraid to mention evolution or are compelled to lie about it for fear of losing their jobs. One of my mentors would say there are three levels of meaning: First, My story - the story of personal anecdote. Where I've been and done and came to be. Second, Our story - the story of the group. For example, he would say that for Christians that means the story of a little Jewish people that's anecdotal for everything else. Also, that unfortunately, the group level is as far as most of us go and we tend to get lost there. We are always fighting over group things. Finally, the third level - where everything is true. That there is a meta-narrative where everything belongs. It provides context and validates the first two levels. It's where you can't be better than anyone else. He would end by saying if there is no THE story then it's all just chaos.

Humanity has never been good at looking at itself and admitting we're not perfect. Or that what we believe may not be right. Thinking critically about ourselves and what we do to our fellow man is not something our race has ever been good at. Admitting you are wrong, especially about your world views, means the world is not what they think, and that can be terrifying to many people. Best to BELIEVE you are right, even if what you believe in is absolutely ridiculous, then to admit you have no idea.

"One of the biggest challenges in life is to know enough about a subject to think you're right but an even bigger challenge is to know enough about it too know you're wrong "
A few years back I had many of my personal beliefs challenged. Lifelong core beliefs which I taught and were my career. As more and more evidence presented itself I felt completely lost and confused. I spent a few more years in that position and tried like mad to prove my findings wrong . The facts were undeniable.
At the perfect time his words hit me like a ton of bricks, giving me the courage to accept the facts and the strength to let go of my false beliefs. He didn't mention it would be easy .

The football would be the photon or particle of light moving through space. Either you believe in God and all men have rights (permanent ethics) or you believe might makes right (no ethics) and your God is an alien because genetics has proven intelligent design and disproven evolution. Your truth vs my truth is a BS argument Neil, there is only one truth. Neil's point is he has no point. What a double talking liberal. All these liberal fools think DeGrasse had something important to say besides, "Can't we all get along," a socialist concession until the next socialist liberal attack on our rights. Neil is either a complete fool or he is willing to lie to make money but his followers are idiots. Over at CNN Fredo got wacked and Lemon got sneezed out. Why is living with Neil Tyson any different from any other time?
Even with your technology today - from what you're telling me, you can't even think for yourself.
What is Neil Tyson telling you that - is so compelling and so fascinating?
If you know anything about Neil Tyson - he uses evolution to explain the universe and everything down to the atoms in our body - yet - the truth of the matter is he is using pseudoscience - not science.
If you really want to answer a question - ask yourself this - why is it that in today's America, the most technically advanced nation on earth - with practically every home a computer, laptop or cell phone - - yet - - most people don't even know the capital of Maine - let alone anything about what's going on around the world - or even in their country?
And don't even ask about - real science!

Interesting and spot-on description of how science is taught in schools. History classes can (have been) the same thing: "Here's a book, it tells you when and where things happened, and who did them ... test on Monday!" But that's not "history"! My high school history prof made us determine WHY things happened - the local and regional EVENTS - and how they AFFECTED various social/political entities, and nudged them into certain ACTIONS. History is alive, and cram-packed full of nuance - it's so much more than dates and names of people and battlefields.

What a wonderful distraction from worrying about Donald Trump and his band of merry criminals, climate change, food insecurity, and a plethora of other fears and concerns. I have loved watching/hearing Dr. Tyson since my first exposure to him. My vision no longer allows me to read (just about the greatest sorrow of my life) but the great folks at Talking Books may have this latest book available; I shall request it this very evening. Thank you both so very much.

The most compelling message from Neil for me in this interview is "whatever is your personal thrut, it's welcomed, but you can't require someone else have your personal truth". This is a genuine problem with every kind of religious "nationalism", be it christian, muslim, or whatever.
You don't need to be a genius to adopt "scientific" thinking. You just need to be critical about the things that you can observe. The people who are the most critical about there own thoughts and observations are scientists.

The apartheid tribesmen removed whites as "the scientists", on the movies, and even cia used to be ivy league white folks. Those don't exist anymore. They also spread atheism through blacks and pregnant men and satanism. Yet those white folks help the apartheid tribesmen spread corruption in our world instead if inclining to Muslims and together defeat the apartheid tribesmen from our midst.
I think this is the punishment on the crossworshippers for being ignorant. They were always ignorant, hence shy they are called Dãaleen (those who went astray).
