30 Hours Underway on the North Pacific Ocean + Weekly Q&A! [NORDHAVN 43]

- Happy Sunday Funday!
Today we're taking you on the first leg of our cruise out of the Puget Sound region, into the North Pacific Ocean and south to Westport in Grays Harbor, WA. This is what many local boaters call the "BIG LEFT TURN" because it's when they leave the old behind and turn left towards adventure down the coast of the US and beyond.
We have big plans in our future, and this trip was a mini "left turn" so we could experience more of coastal cruising and get even more jazzed about long range BLUE WATER cruising in the coming months. And don't forget about our weekly Q&A where we answer more of YOUR questions!
Enjoy!

Great video. I like your lessons learned on the overnight passage. Many moons ago I stood watches as an Officer of the Deck driving a Navy Destroyer around the Pacific and things were very regimented and designed with safety as the first concern, all the time. I empathize with your statement that the fun goes away as the sun disappears, but on a full moon clear night, it can be stunningly beautiful. I could tell you some scary stories of things coming up over the horizon that were difficult to identify and therefore determining a proper course of action was difficult. Your Q&A was very good - yes on the 2nd pup! We have had several breeds and I have to tell you our little Yorkie is probably the biggest personality we've had - she keeps us entertained constantly! Good luck with your continued adventures. Oh yeah, one last thing - Shawn's obsession with maintaining Freedom is superb - someone down the road is going to inherit a very specially maintained boat should you all decide to move to something else.
Elizabeth you are a smartass. I am laughing hysterically. "Shaun has reached his 14 hour limit...". You have to be a boating couple to appreciate the sentiment. Great job Freedom. You took a big step in this trip. Remember for a very affordable fee you can add a 3rd crew member. Then you can do a comfortable 4 on 8 off. Carryon
Love the format of the longer distance travel videos. The sound of the diesel engine in the background is quite comforting and reassuring as you make your way through the passage. @ 5:23 - A rare moment to see Shawn and Mr. Sully in the 'backseat' and Elizabeth at the helm - in control. I was waiting for Shawn to ask "Are we there yet?"
I noticed that Shawn, even while sitting at the back, is always scanning the gauges. Nice.
Yes, backseat boater 😉
You talked about handling seasickness in another video. I found ginger snaps to be totally effective. The 2 keys are to insure they are made with real ginger and take them before you get underway. They taste good and have no side effects.
Best video to date, q & a appreciated, small space - small dog. A companion for your little guy will help him cope.
On the tug I work on, the mate and I do a 7-5-5-7 watch schedule. 0600-1300, 1300-1800, 1800-2300, 2300-0600. That was good advice about staying away from crab pots and logs. Staying in or near to shipping lanes is good since fisherman don't want their gear run over by tugs and barges and ships. Just make sure you're visible to larger craft, preferably one that will show your vessel on their AIS display. Elizabeth, you should really start learning to maneuver the boat, soon. What if there is a medical emergency and Sean has to be airlifted off the Freedom? You need to learn how to start up the boat, pump the boat out, to maneuver and dock your vessel and to use emergency equipment like a dewatering pump if you have one, the fire system and other things, just in case. You're a smart woman and very capable. I think you can do it. :) On the dog breed..and size. Small is better, for reasons Elizabeth mentioned. Avoid a puppy though. A puppy might chew the woodwork on your boat, or other things or people...and a puppy would require constant care and attention. There's an advantage of getting a young adult but small dog from a dog rescue place. You'll get to see what its personality is like, and you can bring Mr Sully along to introduce it to Mr Sully and see if they will get along. Best regards and following seas.
One of your best episodes yet. Great comment about living in your home that's floating in someone else's.
The content is great. Love the mixture with Q&A. Standard Poodle, female, is smart, loves water, and almost a person. Does not shed and needs to be groomed. I am on my third female standard. Had a number of different breeds. Love them all. Standard Poodle is definitely a cut about. She would love boat life.
Really appreciate the Q&A part and just the general learning process. Some others seem to try to show “Instagram life” aboard, you two really teach and share your experience which is of great value.
Shaun and Elizabeth, wonderful heartfelt, full of knowledge about you both, video. You're the sweetest couple. A terrific pair.
How about a Labradoodle? Got to love those water dogs. Only drawback is grooming. Huge plus, not much shedding if any. Great for Shaun's OCD. ☺
We have a Poochon. He is 8 years old and a barrel of fun loves to play ball. He fits in a backpack if necessary. Saddle bag would be better though.
You guys have a great week too.
❤️ LabDoodles
NO SECOND DOG. We got a second dog and now find us looking for a sitter when we go out. Much more work for sure. Hold to your Guns Shawn. Another great video by the way. Thanks
Labradoodle is popular but great breed. There are three sizes. We love ours. We have a medium and he is about 30lbs. Being hair, there is little to no shedding. Big plus for housekeeping.
Thanks for taking us along, very interesting doing the longer run, q&a big 👍. Re the puppies we travel with two Jack Russells, find having two they keep each other company when left alone, and enjoy chasing balls together. We travel in a caravan and having the two smaller dogs means a bit more room for all, and being small makes them easier to handle / carry if needed. We have also found some places are happy for small dogs but tend not to be as welcoming for big dogs.
Thanks so much for taking me back to the land I love. Having grown up in Seattle and the Washington coast, it's nice of you to share your adventures with someone unable to go there in person.
I was getting concerned about all the spray on your boat - so was relieved to see Shawn spraying the boat!
But i was concerned when I didn't see the follow up waxing job.. can't have water marks now
Gotta keep an eye on this guy!
Well done and kudos on that left turn to Freedom. Westport has and always been my favorite coastal destination for decades from Seattle. You've got the right vessel for those bar crossings and today was a cakewalk! Love the video and might see you on the Oregon Coast during your passage. Waving as you venture bye from Newport.
Thank you for sharing your amazing life with us. I'm wheelchair bound in quarantine and watching you guys takes me away from being alone at home to a world traveler on a beautiful journey to see the world. Thank you. My condolences for the loss of your fur baby.
Scuba Steve thank you for sharing that with us, it’s incredibly encouraging to know that our videos brighten someone else’s day!
King Charles Cavalier. Awesome dogs, perfect companions. Thank you for another great video.
Clean windows great views, safe bar crossing and a one pot meal. That's boating.
Love your videos!!! So well done. I’m sure it’s easier just having Mr.Sully. But.. would he enjoy having company??? Safe passage and enjoy the day!!!
He loved his sister especially when something made him nervous and really likes buddies around other than mommy and daddy!
Found your channel just a week ago. Used to have a 36’ Jeanneau sailboat in San Diego from 2007 to 2018. When we sailed to the Channel Islands, (no dogs allowed on shore) I got a piece of sod for our Yorkshire terrier. It made a huge mess in the cockpit. Then I bought a potty tray and put a training pad under it. Our dog would not use it until we sprinkled a couple of tablespoons of dirt on the pad. Our dog smelled the dirt and finished his business very quickly. Of course, I would put a leash on him and pretend that we were going for a walk to the foredeck where I had set up the potty tray. He passed away 18 months ago.
Awaiting the arrival of a beagle who was born last weekend. Hoping to follow your steps and get a trawler next year. Enjoy your channel immensely.
Q & A's are great as are your videos with helpful and humorous commentary!
Hello,, thanks for bringing us all along on your voyage.
Cape Flahtery is fun to walk out from road. About 1/2 mile trail. Great to have experienced and watch the puffin's play. Fished Neah Bay with my grandfather in a 16 foot skiff about 60 years ago. It hasn't changed much in that time. I also remember the "bar" on one salmon fishing trip. Broke many waves over the bow in a 50'.
Hope you make it down to Brookings, Oregon, we have a nice harbor and good bar crossing. Have seen many Norhavns stop here going up and down the coast. Another very interesting video. Love Mr Sully, I would get another one his size lot easier on a boat and in the tender.
I'm a fan of Brookings. I always stop there when transiting instead of Crescent City. An easy entrance. A bit too far to walk into town proper for 'stuff', but an easy taxi (yeah, taxi...no Uber last few times I was there) ride. And there's decent food options in the harbor itself if you want to get off the boat for a while. I do have to say though, the fuel dock can be a bit...messy.
Nice video- enjoyed he whales especially. It looks like Sully has to get his "seapaws" back! Safe travels! I amenjoying the Q&A at the end of the videos, keep them coming!
Golden doodle..they don’t shed, medium sized, and they love to snuggle! Rottys are amazing, 100lb lap dogs, solid nerves, and pretty low key.
been watching you guys for a long itme. Thanks for being you
Absolutely get Mr. Sully a friend. Get another chihuahua. Not enough space for a large dog IMHO. Go get Mr. Sully a Mrs. LOL. Love your videos. Keep em coming.
One of your best videos yet.....
Yorkie, great dog not only cute but smart too.
You two are living the dream. I wish and know that i will live like that soon.
Shawn is built to have a boat .. someone who enjoys the never ending maintenance tasks .. might also be a little OCD .. but that's what it takes 😂🤣
It is inspiring to see you two out chasing your dreams. The journey sets you apart.
As always, I love your videos, I look forward to them and the education I get each week... enjoy, be safe
Jeff..Qualicum Beach BC
Love DDD! Ha, the latest I’ve been loving! Even my wife has watched them. Guy and Hunter w the virtual DDD is awesome!
Love that your cruising the coast! Looking forward to all that’s coming! Yes get another dog! We adopt all our dogs, and we have 3 right now! We are partial to Labs, 2 yellow and 1 black at the moment!
Great content, I love these cruising videos! Thank you :)
I don’t know but that pasta looks amazing! I think you should share the recipe.
It’s super easy! We first cook tri color veggie pasta from Trader Joe’s and place in fridge. Then grill and slice up 5 chicken sausages along with 8 mini sweet bell peppers. Next, sauté a pack of sliced mushrooms and add the sliced chick/peppers and one bag of sundried tomatoes (about 1/2 cup). Finally, add in TJ’s vegan cashew pesto and the pasta from the fridge, stir together to coat with pesto, let sit over med/low heat for about 10 minutes and eat up!
Great content. Always enjoy watching and learning from the two of you.
A bit of advice from the Royal Navy.. When doing passages like this the 4hr watch rota is best way to do it. If first mate isn't keen on night watches maybe planning in advance for before midnight watch as the the early hours can freak people out ESPECIALLY with no moon!
Another great episode guys! Great info on how to avoid debris using traffic lanes and deeper water. Thanks and please keep ‘em comping!
Looking good, as always Sully, Elizabeth & Shawn! We have yet to take on the overnight passage so it was great being along for yours. Cheers!
Great video!! Really liked the left turn signal(er)....lol. Getting ready for Marco and Laura here. Wish I was in Washington....
Great video and good luck on your journey! I am very much looking forward to following you. My vote for a new addition is a polydactyl..... a mariner’s good luck charm. 😊.
Again, great video. Thanks guys for keeping us in tow! Stay safe.
So glad I found you! We've been tossing around the idea of selling our current 28 four winns boat and house and getting a Nordhavn and cruising the world and our 2 dogs have been the biggest thing we've been trying to figure out how to accommodate. Love seeing you have two here as well!
Chelsea G sadly we only have one now since Sandy passed away, but there might be another soon! We’ll certainly be sharing a lot more about dogs and cruising as we get closer to leaving the US since that’s a big deal.
Really appreciate your vids. Sweet, warm and always something to learn!
That steady drone of the engine would lull me to sleep which isn't really a bad thing unless you're on night watch of course.
Very much enjoy your videos. Thanks for all the work that goes into them.
Mixed metaphor ... "A walk in the cake.".
Mmmm, that sounds like a nice walk 😉
It's easier and more enjoyable than a piece of cake, or a walk in the park. Good stuff here.🤘😎
You guys are just terrific. l subscribe to lots of boating channels and it starts to get boring. Your channel is so different. Very calming effect to watch. And great top-notch filming and editing, which l guess is mostly down to Elizabeth. And out of all the boats, sailing boats l look at, l am most jealous of your boat, it's so ship-shape, clean and l absolutely love the bridge, it has such a little ship feel, with those shaped windows and Portuguese walk around. Just a perfect boat. Sean seems such a knowledgeable captain and your both are so likeable as people. Not to forget the real star of the show, Sully of course.
Thank you!
Feedback: the Q&As are definitely not boring! I hope to get into cruising (but not full-time live-aboard) in the PNW in the next 3 years (?) based out of Bellingham. I really appreciate your videos as they’re detailed and geographically relevant. Cheers! 🍻
bnkwupt great to hear, thanks for sharing! We’re hoping to get to Bellingham soon since we’ve heard it’s a great town!
Another Chihuahua! Chocolate color. I hope to see you enter Depot Bay,Oregon with drone footage. Spectacular helm at night.
Love the channel. I also love the cooking that you show. My Q&A question, is would Shawn be willing to do a Galley segment with favorite recipes? I always get hungry watching!
Jeff Slaven he’d probably love that, maybe before Thanksgiving when we do our usual recipe trial runs in the galley and on the grill!
Enjoying the new adventures and the “new” format. Great editing too!
Awesome footage of the whales.
If you make it down to San Francisco, there are many nice marinas in the bay, though not all allow live aboards. Cruising up the Sacramento river delta offers many activities. Lots of small towns along the delta with many marinas, some allowing live aboards. Have a great voyage!
Your videos are always excellent! Love the Q+A...thanks!
Don't be afraid of the "Columbia River Bar" in summer time good weather. Dock in Astoria and enjoy the nearby restaurants and shops. Or bus down to Cannon beach and Seaside. Crossed the bar many times in a small boat in good summer weather, during all tides or even between tides. When ever I caught my limit.
Darn there was a bus to Cannon Beach? We tried for several days to rent a car but were told everyday that no cars were available yet despite a full lot each night. We loved it there and especially want to get back to see the beaches.
I live in Portland, Or. The 90 mile trip up river has some very pretty sights. The Trip to Hood River is pretty, though there are Locks at Bonneville.
We have two mastiffs, an English and an Italian (Cane Corso) both great friendly mutts with people, but they do keep strangers on their toes, just because of their size. Anyone who sees one of them roving your decks will not be coming on uninvited, even though they might only get licked to death.
Great video. Appreciate the cooking spot also. After standing hundreds of watches underway, I'd do 4 hour watches. Power naps are okay (2hr) but it will slowly creep up on you later. 4 hours gets you at least 2 hours deep sleep.
Agreed! Shawn can fall asleep fast but later at night I take about an hour to get to sleep leaving me with only an hour to actually get rest. Min of 3 hours but 4 seems ideal.
Enjoyed the video and the question and answer. Keep up the great work!
Congrats on making the "big left turn'! Instructive as always, still like the Q and A, too.
Q&A sessions are great! Would not change a thing!
Do enjoy your videos! When I first saw you at the helm there Elizabeth, with your visor sideways and down, I thought ?! then quickly remembered how my cap (less effectively) is always down sideways on my head later in the day, rowing to and from my boat at the mooring when the sun is lower in the west!
Colin yes I wasn’t trying to be cool, the sun was just killer that night 😉
@@mvfreedom Exactly! Can be so hot sometimes at that time of the day
Love you guys!!!! Been watching for awhile now. I'm former commercial fisherman from Alaska of 26 years. Don't have a boat now. But I can live the dream vicariously thru you guys!! Please keep up the great work!!!! Watching your videos is educational and highly entertaining!!! I live in Edmonds. Originally from Aberdeen and Grays Harbor. I've been over the Westport Barlots of times!! Thanks!!!!
Always amazed by the videos! Thanks
Golden doodles are great boat dogs. Ours goes into the birth and sleeps when we are underway. Cruising doesn’t seem to bother her at all. The best part is they have less shedding
Terrific vid, guys!
Thanks for sharing-
Life is good ~
Well done on your first overnight cruise! I noticed the headsets, we have the same brand we call them the marriage savers. Once again great job on both your cruise and video.
Thank you guys for the big left turn.
Nice job guys great trip!!!!
That you for the video, we are looking at buying and you videos have been extremely helpful when it comes from what to expect.
Thank you guys for no BS videos sorry to hear about your 4 legged companion ..happy sailing Doug Brisbane Aus
Another great video, keep safe and keep the content coming while you travel south.
It's just great following you people!
Great video again. I love the Q&As.
Thanks Shawn for helping Sully out
You had a super nice crossing. Great job timing your trip. I was on a 500’ naval vessel crossing there and that was rough.
Stay well! Cheers!
Love your videos I have to live my dream of cruising vicariously through ya'lls adventures, and the four leged kids are the only way to go. And the Q&A's are fantastic
Even the engine room videos I LOVE THEM.
Rob Harris from Northern Australia.
Love the Q&A
Thanks again
Get another dog like Mr. Sully. I have a dog like Mr. Sully. His name is Jimbo. I enjoyed the cruising time on this video from the early morning start till you tied the boat up. Sean's dinner looked delicious!
It was especially since we hardly ate while underway...some coffee and granola bar at breakfast and peanuts and tortilla chips at midnight!
You two are a magnificent couple, I have been watching MV Freedom for quite a long time and do enjoy the adventure. I also like the boat work eps and the Q&A is a nice touch. It is pleasure watching. And may I say your video is very well produced. Thanks so much. I live the Missouri, having many lakes and rivers, but no ocean.
William Callaway thank you!
It was really funny when you had Mr. Sully on his little patch of fake grass taking care of business. LOL!
Haha he circled for what seemed like forever, I got dizzy waiting for him to finally go! Poor guy 🐶
Lagotto Romanolo❗️. Water dog that's at home around water. Very smart. They do not shed. Max out around 30lbs but often are 25lbs. Human like eyes. Rare breed but very cool. I'll never have a different breed again.
Interesting we’ve never heard of that breed but given the First Mate is a purebred Italian this seems appropriate 😉
Loved this episode...greetings from Sweden
I’m glad Shawn is looking after Freedom in 14.5 hours , I’d be doing the same . Ya can’t blame him for that
I would have to vote that you get an Australian Terrior as a friend to Mister Sully, They are generally very calm like Sully, and they don't shed very much hair all over your boat.
New to the Channel....You guys do a great job, love the narration. I live in San Diego proud owner of a 16' Bayliner....lol!! I also spend allot time in the Northwest and have visited many places you visit ( By Car...or plane) .... Nice to see it from the water perspective...Love Roche harbor and the small airport, departure is right over the hotel.
Glad you found us! At some point we’ll get to San Diego 👍
The whole video was great. Mr. Sully doesn't look like he enjoys cruising too much. Or maybe the shaking was he was cold. A bigger dog is better boat security, and they tend to be less nervous. Maybe a water breed. Chesapeake Bay Retriever. But a bigger dog means more work. Get them as a puppy and they'll only know the boat life.
Tony & Susan here, we like the Q&A, nice to see you under way. Really cleaning the boat under way ,haha. Looking forward to some distant travels.
These Nordhavens are incredible! Just humming away!
We are enjoying your videos. Subscribed and always Thumbs Up. But this is my first comment. My wife Cheri and I lived on our Grand Banks 42 Classic from 2001-2003 full time and cruised the Eastern and Southern portions of The Great Loop. Lived in Key West for 6 or 7 months and even made treks to Cuba and Yucatan (Isla Mujeres). In the 90s we were known as the youngest trawler couple at Trawler Fests every year. We almost bought a Nordhavn and I had breakfast with Jim Leishman - Nordhavn Yachts and pitched doing a co-sponsored reality video of a young couple cruising, and I envisioned it being weekly installments on UA-cam. I even thought about going to work for PAE and that is a whole other story.
We kept our GB42 for 15 years, and have been boatless but living within a stones throw of the Sea of Cortez in San Carlos, Mexico for over 7 years. We bought a 300+ year old adobe hacienda turned boutique hotel & restaurant in 2009 and have been missing cruising, but enjoying life.
Now with the darn plandemic, I mean pandemic, it just feels like the right time to start cruising again. We two have two dogs. One is too old to cruise, but at 16 and a big dog, she is likely in her last year. And we/I have found a boat, a 49 DeFever Raised Pilot House that we have made a deposit on and are flying to La Paz to see her for the first time on Friday. You know the whole drill, Sea Trials on Saturday, Mechanical Surveys, and then out of water survey. Then insurance, purchase and new importation documents. Then we can make a 30 hour trip turn into a four to seven day trip to come North and East to the mainland MarinaTerra at San Carlos/Nuevo Guaymas, Sonora.
If you guys are planning to come this far South, we would sure like to meet you. I have many questions and comments, but I will pace myself and enter them one-by-one to improve your stats even more on YT. Do you have any UA-cam content providers (related to boats or cruising) you would like to recommend? Thanks and stay well and voyage every day.
Captain DJ
Darrin Jones we plan to come south to MEX in a couple of years!
I can't blame you for wanting to get out of Seattle.
Thanks for the video.
Every couple works out a watch schedule that works for them. On Roam, Michelle and I prefer a 3 on/3 off schedule. This has worked well for us on longer 1000+ mile passages, but we’ve gotten in the habit of keeping that same schedule even on short day passages.
Great job describing your passage!
Clark & Michelle Haley
N55-24 Roam
Thanks! Doing 3 hour watches sounds good since two hours is way too short for a solid nap!
@@mvfreedom We've tried many different schedules including a trip I made across the Gulf of Mexico a few years ago with the buyer of our Manta Catamaran, where he said he preferred 8 hour shifts and then proceeded to add "AND I don't do night shifts..."! When there are only 2 of you aboard, you just have to experiment with what works for YOU. One word of advice though: whatever shift schedule you decide on, when you're off shift, you MUST force yourself to go right to bed and get your sleep after dark. On longer passages, you MUST get in to a rhythm or you'll be exhausted. Good luck and perhaps we'll see you on the west coast next spring/summer.
I enjoyed this vid and it was well done like the others. I think you guys are getting better at this over time. It was interesting to see the docks and how high they are. Obviously, very big tide swings there? As always, like seeing the PNW boating. I’ve been to Seattle once years ago and to San Francisco and a few other places in CA but nothing water related. I’m all east coast and the Caribbean boating so I’m enjoying this new world on the water via your vids. Thank you for sharing.
AKA JBS Smith yes we have very large tidal swings usually around 12 feet.
