What makes this interesting is the fact that Luigi comes from a very rich family. So this is not what mainstream media is trying to make it out to be. Which is the poor vs the rich. This is someone rich standing up for the poor.
The fact that a relatively rich person is not insulated from these issues really goes to show just how broken the US healthcare system is (but we don't know his whole story yet).
they're saying it's 68,000 people PER YEAR die because of denials of care from United but even if it's only two, people have no right to cry about "but he had a family! he was a father!" when United takes away the people from tens of thousands of families every single year. Brian Thompson was a serial killer, and what Luigi did was street justice
Right. Brian Thompson was a thief and a MURDERER. He was the worst possible kind of criminal, who targeted the old, the sick, the poor and the lame. Zero tears cried for him or his.
…and let’s not forget call a public healthcare system - socialism. Interesting because the US taxpayer dollars are paying for isntraeli free healthcare….among many other things. You go without while mass murders get great medical help. You are a silly lot. It’s not socialism, is a modern necessity. Go to most countries and you will find free healthcare.
The media here in the US keeps trying to make it sound like the overwhelming reaction to this is an aberration, but I'm 50 years old, not on TikTok or Instagram,., definitely not crushing on this kid, hate even images of violence (never could stomach GOT) and yet my heart actually sank when I heard he'd been arrested. I'm kind of surprised by my own reaction, but there is a palpable sense of exhilaration (I hesitate to say "glee") that someone finally fought back. (When was our twisted, corrupt, barbaric "health care system" ever even mentioned during the election? Never.) This has definitely unleashed something.
Yes, "glee" is definitely the wrong word for it. For me, hearing about this event was like taking the cork out of a bottle of rage I didn't notice I was carrying. It's cathartic.
Luigi murdered nobody. brian thompson had acute lead poisoning. His failure to report this should result in his family getting *_NOTHING_* from the life insurance companies. If anything, his failure should result in his family being forced to pay for his funeral costs out of pocket.

I live in California. My mother is suffering from late-stage cancer, caused by asbestos in Johnson & Johnson products. They knew the asbestos was present, but they decided to keep selling those products anyway because they calculated it was simply cheaper to pay for damages. United Healthcare decided she needed to undergo months of chemotherapy instead of the immunotherapy recommended by her oncologist. Once the chemotherapy failed (as her oncologist said it would), she was finally able to get immunotherapy. She still had to suffer for months of chemotherapy side effects and the cancer continuing to grow. For myself, I have a failed spinal fusion that requires surgery. However, because I lost my job due to the problem with my back, I don’t have insurance. Getting the surgery I need is next to impossible. I’ve been out of work for several years and have not been able to qualify for disability yet. I’m trying to take college classes online, but I can only take one or two at a time because of my back pain. Hopefully, I can get the training I need to do some other work despite the agony in my back. Luigi fought back for me and my mom. He’s a hero.
Living on Portugal where we dont pay for medical bills or exames, makes the US health care system even more evil and unfair. specially when People are sick and vulnerable. And then to Realize the health company profits. Its Pure evil
True, just a few very rich people, many earn an average of low income. Many, many homeless people in the US. This has been going on for decades already.
People move here even if they will be poor here. More people move to America than any other country on earth. It seems to be the best for both Rich and Poor.
I'd say its also the greediest country. The rich there, no matter how rich they are, can't seem to be satisfied. They keep wanting more. Including their politicians. They never want to retire but to keep making more money.
I'm not American, I live in a country with excellent healthcare for everyone. From what I know about the horrors of the US health business i totally understand that many Americans are "not sorry". Not many people around the world would grieve the death of a drug lord. This guy was just a drug lord of a slightly different kind. He was responsible for and profited from the death of countless people. So why should we be sorry for him?
@eva2110. You are one of the few foreigners understanding what a lot of Americans have been feeling. We are not important and rich enough to matter. Sooner or later we all will need healthcare, (surgeries, treatments etc.). I was denied a needed procedure (paid out of my own pocket). Our system and the people promoting it are disgusting. This is a wake up call.
You certainly put it into a clear perspective! Thumb 👍 Yes, Thompson was a kind of "drug lord". The only difference is that he had the justification of the law supporting and condoning his crimes.
@@anitamenigMost of Europeans understand. I'm an American living in Europe and they constantly comment how backwards health insurance is in the US. That said, the German healthcare system is quickly falling down the same hole.
Luigi is indeed a hero. The class of people that his "victim" represent think nothing of consigning people to the dustbin in the name of a fist full of dollars.
I left a reply, and it went where? Let me try again. Only wealthy people in America want Capitalism. Average Americans are just trying to eat,and stay out of homeless encashments.
I am an American and certainly have _not_ been “praising capitalism” at a time when income inequality has been increasing every year since the Reagan administration. Clearly you must be mistaking rich Americans for average everyday Americans.
Did I just see a Fox News segment that smoothly transitioned - with total lack of irony! - from condemning the vigilante murder of a mass-murdering healthcare robber baron, to praising the manslaughterer of some mentally ill homeless guy who'd almost certainly been failed/created by the same nightmarish healthcare system? This world gives me the Ick...
The more I learn about this event the more I am convinced: What Luigi did as brutal as it was still could not be described as "murder" because looking into that abyss called health"care" industry in the united states it seems more to be self defence or even pest control...
@@clairewright332 well when was the last time health care industry was widely criticized and people banded together for a cause in solidarity?? Have you read history? If political system wasnt so c0rrupt due to legalized br1bery democracy could have been outlet for peoples will which IS ITS INTENDED FUNCTION and US would have had universal healthcare like all the other industrial countries.
Many lives were destroyed by the extreme medical costs and the lack of a proper coverage from insurance companies like UHC. The healthcare system in the US is broken. Many mil veterans also know. Sad.
The only function of corporations is to make money for shareholders. It's what infuriates me about Americans who fight against removing the profit motive from healthcare - like what the hell do you expect and if you don'y know, why the Hell do you have solid opinions on it?
Bernie Sanders has been saying for years that 50 million people in the US can't afford any health insurance! And many more are under insured. Health insurance is also conditional on employment so working people will lose health insurance for their family if they lose their job or displease their boss 3/4 million folks are declared bankrupt and become homeless because they can't afford medical bills.
Yet Israel pretends to justify genocide due to terrorism as if this will somehow result in peace. The illogic of murder is rife in military and police systems. It is not OK to kill UNLESS we are doing the killing. Apparently only the state and wealthy capitalist institutions have the right to take a human life. The rest of us have rules we must obey, to the slaughter, apparently.
@@Skygrey2943 Oh, but they love him, it turns out. There's a NewsNation report that came out earlier today showing the inmates shouting in support of Luigi.
This whole thing has given me hope again. Seeing people from all walks of life and political persuasions taking this guys side shows that the media doesn't have total control of us and can't always set the narrative. And seeing everyone finally understand that social murder is just the same as murder just fills me with joy. Class conscious omg, maybe it'll be socialism rather than barbarism after all?
Also no doubt seeing hundreds of thousands of people get slaughtered over the past year has desensitised people somewhat; seeing all our governments condone this horrific genocide has made people doubt why the state is the entity that has the exclusive right to decide which violence is righteous and which isn't.

Luigi's act is more than heroic. It will mark a turning point in history. He has expressed the plight of billions of people in the face of Corporate greed and theft masked as benefits for humankind, protected and enforced by government. The very taxes that we pay is a theft of our hard earned money for the benefit of corporations. His act also clearly indicates that we can only redress the injustices foisted on us by corporations aided and abetted by government through unconventional channels. The conventional avenues available to us are controlled by the very same Corporations that fleece us. Mangionism-to dismantle corporatocracy.
At a press conference Mayor Adams gave a correspondent directly asked the mayor to comment on the police resources spent on capturing the beating to death of a Spanish speaking immigrant the day following the murder. The immigrant's crime is that he did not speak English. Those killers, if they have been caught, did not garner the attention given to Luigi. But then again, the dead immigrant was not a CEO.
I live with ankylosing spondylitis. Somewhat similar but arthritic and inoperable. It's taken away huge chunks of my 20s. I think untreated pain like this is no joke and is being downplayed. Not that this makes what he did in anyway defendable. It's important to note how huge the industries are that profit off of pain and conditions of the back and spine. He seems to be standing up for people in his letter.
That sucks, I’m sorry. I have a pinched nerve situation in my back myself, and it comes with truly mind-bending pain at times, so I def understand how rough it can be. Best of luck.
It's a strange system of health care when the people who provide it and pay for your care would rather you die if you get seriously ill or injured so that you can't make a claim.
yeah it’s hard to overstate his widespread popularity in the States. everyone has a horror story of dealing with American privatized healthcare (even people WITH insurance coverage), and the only people outraged about this are the very wealthy, and people who are the direct beneficiaries of this system.
I broke my wrist a year ago. Right after, my husband lost his job and our healthcare. The wrist is still broken. Just bought a wrist brace for 25 bucks . That's my healthcare. Duck that CEO.

My heart goes out to ALL the actual yet forgotten victims and their loved ones who suffered immensely from denied health care. Let’s never forget about the actual victims in this story. While killing another human being is pretty much unjustifiable outside desperate self-defence cases, Luigi's rage against the system resonates loudly and it speaks to how the system has failed so so many people that someone like Luigi even thinks that assassinating people in positions of power is the only way to make even the slightest difference. Who knows indeed if this will lead to any hopeful tendencies in the future. But the fact that so many people see Luigi as a folk hero speaks to the general dissatisfaction with the status quo.
"general dissatisfaction" is putting it mildly... Among the 99%, tell me who doesn't worry about health insurance, about its cost, about being stuck in a job they hate because they don't want to lose their health insurance? They are all victims even if they have never been sick....
"self-defence cases" ? his family more wealthy than the CEO he gun down. they donate millions to solve and help the problem, but Luigi choose the radical solution. there is no self defense here .
The other biggest nation-destroying hot button issue across these countries is immigration, no? Does the flippant endorsement of violence by Owen and some of you still apply if the "hero" has a grudge about the wrong issue?
On the one hand, as a Canadian I have always been stunned by how Americans deal with so much cruelty with healthcare, how they manage when they're often absolutely CRUSHED with healthcare debt (can you imagine becoming extremely ill and having the stress of debt on top of it?!). On the other hand, I don't understand why Americans keep voting for it. I guess they are trapped with the two-party system. In Canada, it was a third party, the NDP, that brought us universal healthcare.
Your assessment of the lack of self awareness regarding this crime and the crimes against humanity being committed - and justified - in Gaza and other places, IS SPOT ON.
Of course we can't condone murder ... but ... Americans are sick of being prey to the corporations at their hour of weakness ... it amazes me why this hasn't happened before and why American's aren't up in arms daily at the callous profiteering on the back of ill health bad luck, that exploitation is NOT the sign of a great nation, however regularly they tell the rest of the world that they are.
Fox news pundits recently "how ridiculous it is that people hail Luigi a hero for murder! Up next we talk about the Hero who killed the homeless guy and got away with it"
All I'll say is that I'm surprised with how passive we are as a society, I don't know if this will become more common, but if it does no one should be surprised

No, they have no idea what's going on. They are completely in a different bubble than ordinary Americans. They are out of touch, just like our politicians.
While I can never condone murd*r, this event should highlight the mortality of us all. I'm pretty disgusted that the discourse in "elite" circles was FINALLY gun laws and predictably protection requirements for "high net worth" individuals. While the dead children in US schools was never enough. But to see one of their own fall, they finally gaf. And finally the most disgusting thing is not a word in those circles about regulating healthcare insurance to ensure the patient takes priority and avoidable deaths are vastly reduced. This wasn't an act of mass action, but the jubilation of the common man in light of it, should be a warning to us all, that eventually the chord snaps and chaos reigns.
Road accidents, lack of adequate health insurance, each unalives more americans than humans with guns. Logically you would make cars illegal before guns, or are those deaths acceptable to you for the convenience of driving?
@@nameberry220 dude, that's exactly my point. Lack of adequate healthcare kills more people each year, yet one dead CEO opened up a conversation of restricting access to guns, something that repeated school shootings never did, INSTEAD of a conversation on improving access to healthcare. Get it?

If you want to know the nightmare of the US medical system, I'd recommend an article from the Guardian about a US charity Remote Area Medical. They arrange free clinics for people who have no insurance or have needs not covered by their insurance. It shows the absolute nightmare that Americans go through and why their rage is so visceral and intense. They have an absolute hatred of US private healthcare & particularly its red tape. I don't want to hear a word of condemnation of the people sympathetic with the killer from those cheering a genocide and the US wars! they are so unserious!
They should be on the same side of the equation - those wanting to law upheld should be condemning the slughter in Gaza as well as this murder in America.
It's telling what people think of the rich when a man is gunned down in cold blood in the middle of the street and people are treating his killer like he's Robin Hood.
I'm from Germany. We have a lot of problems with our health care system. Too many old people need help, and there are too less young people who are nurses or doctors. The clinic personnel gets more and more stressed, ill, or they try to find jobs in a different field. But when I see this, i'm feeling lucky. At least your life isn't ruined by medical bill and even as a homeless person you get medical treatment when someone finds you and call the paramedics. It's a shock to me that the US system is so inhumane that even murder is seen as an act of heroism by the great majority of comments i have seen on the Internet.
How do homeless people have insurance in Germany? It is not universal but user pays like the USA, it comes from your wage, or employment protection if your unemployed, the homeless person would have to pay the insurance company 200€ per month, and if they don't the insurance company cancels the insurance.
@@nameberry220As someone who works with the homeless in Germany - many homeless are properly listed as unemployed, which means our unemployment agency fully covers their health insurance. You're only required to pay the ~200 if you have any sort of extra income like an allowance. In the cases where they're not insured (some refuse to be registered in any way) they still get hospital treatments as needed, and will be billed afterwards. As needed is a very broad category in Germany, obviously excluding things like elective plastic surgery, but including a bunch of things that Americans frequently get denied by their insurances. These bills they get after the care then will never be paid, and while it hurts all companies involved, it's something our society, as a whole, is willing to pay for reasons of humanity.
@nameberry220 Like said below. It is also demanded by law to help another human being in danger. This also applies to a homeless person dying on a street. The monetary issue is secondary.
Americans pay a lot of taxes, but little of it goes to help the American People as it is supposed to. Also, unlike what you stated about civilized countries,America is not a civilized country.
I think it can be argued that the mainstream media reaction is indicative of one of two things, or perhaps both. The reactions from most of the media appear to display either a complete disconnect with the general public or alternatively they display just how rooted in corporate dogma the industry has become. If I'm brutally honest I'm surprised that there hasn't been more prominent figures from the American health insurance industry targeted already. The sad thing is that the circumstances surrounding Luigi's actions will most likely not be considered and he will probably be hit the maximum sentencing available. In the event this does happen I think it can be argued that it will be a reflection of corporate influence over the judicial system and hammer home the fact that a person's wealth and social status is a key factor when it comes to how crimes are dealt with.
7:25 I think Owen is missing a little bit of context here: there’s a sort of ‘inside joke’ of Italian-Americans looking up to Columbus as an almost-heroic Italian historical figure. Anytime people bring up all the awful things that Columbus did and suggest taking down his statues, there are always Italian-American groups who are like “you’re trying to erase our heritage!” This trope even featured as the subplot for an episode of The Sopranos. The tweet is just highlighting how it would be much less problematic if Luigi became that symbol of Italian pride & identity in the States.
Sacco and Vanzetti are also our heritage .Maybe Americans should investigate the aftermath of their Thanksgiving holiday .The extermination and enslavement of hundreds of native nations.Btw Native people here die 20 years before whites.
If he's a direct descendant of Italians, probably, but he's just an American. Maybe that's the way to talk about him because he's got so little traces to Italy that he couldn't go there to get public healthcare.
The Sopranos and Super Mario Bros. memes go hard, TMZ posted a few with, one had an angry Tony Soprano pointing and shouting "In this house, Luigi Mangione is a Hero, end of story!" 2.8M views, and an image of an armed Luigi from Super Mario Bros. in a hoodie, or Silvio (Steven Van Zandt) saying "Luigi Mangione? Ya know what this is? I'll tell ya what this is... Anti-Italian discrimination."
Excuse me I'm Italian-American who has Native American relatives and friends. I knew about Columbus before you were born. There may be some Italian-American groups that still believe that Columbus was a hero but many of us have learned how horrible he really was.
I wonder how a jury will decide on this case! To be completely clear, I was gutted when they arrested Luigi. I do think he’s done what he thought was the only way to get justice.
Well done Luigi, it’s horrible that you were pushed to such actions but the American healthcare system is a joke. I’ve been told some couples are divorcing each other if their health declines because they don’t want to saddle their partner with debt after death and I just think that’s insane. That’s only one example but I just don’t understand how healthcare is not universally provided by governments
I think you have the crux of it. Killing IS condemnable and at the same time sensible people can only balk and reject the idea that this person’s death is much more tragic than all of those in Palestinian we’re told to not care about, or all of those killed by the state of healthcare in the states which we are told is unavoidable when we know that’s not the case. And that’s if this was a completely unmotivated attack! IF the USA was an ideal country this company wouldn’t have been able to cause the harm it has or those responsible for its acts of social murder would be on trial. That is unfortunately not the order of things, and hopefully this extreme act will bring justice to millions and save the lives of many by affecting change.
Luigi Mangione seems like a nice lad to me. He has an honest face which is a rarity in our days. And he had some GUTS also very rare in our days. So he deserves our admiration. PS He would also be a far better president compaired to the MANIAC CRIMINALS we have now.
As a healthcare provider. I cannot just simply help myself by see the justice coming to the CEOs of those insurance companies. They have been a vouchers of our healthcare community and jeopardizing patient health and also livelihood of medical professionals by continuously cutting our reimbursement putting more burden on us and not allowing us to provide the care to the patient that they deserve. United healthcare has been for many many years and it is now still the worst of all so I’m not surprising that has been a CEO of that company. They have been entitled in many corruption scandals linked to many politicians and surprisingly growing exponentially in the US.
Very compassionate take on your part given the the British system installed after the devastation of WWII was intended to provide universal coverage and does negotiate the price of therapeutics whereas the U.S. system does not even for Medicare and Medicaid patients. Here's to hoping the British system remains the model of dignity it was meant to be.

Civilized countries don’t need insurance. We all pay a little amount with our taxes and everyone who needs care gets it, paid for by everyone.
@nameberry220
Like said below. It is also demanded by law to help another human being in danger. This also applies to a homeless person dying on a street. The monetary issue is secondary.
Americans pay a lot of taxes, but little of it goes to help the American People as it is supposed to.
Also,unlike
what you stated about civilized countries,America is not a civilized country.

Thats because it's the tech CEOs that have been targeted. Ironically mangione idolized the Unabomber.

CITIZENS TAKING BACK " CITIZENS UNITED "
It is horribly sad that it takes someone dying for us Americans to take ANYTHING seriously, but that's the way it seems to be right now.
You mean Americans dying
Please bare in mind there is absolutely no evidence linking him to this murder.
To me, the guy in the parka with the thin lips and narrow nose does not look like Luigi!
I wonder how a jury will decide on this case!
To be completely clear, I was gutted when they arrested Luigi. I do think he’s done what he thought was the only way to get justice.
Best money I’ve spent is supporting your channel on Patreon Owen ❤️, you never abandoned the suffering of the Palestinians, and we won’t abandon you
👍
Well done Luigi, it’s horrible that you were pushed to such actions but the American healthcare system is a joke. I’ve been told some couples are divorcing each other if their health declines because they don’t want to saddle their partner with debt after death and I just think that’s insane. That’s only one example but I just don’t understand how healthcare is not universally provided by governments
they got the wrong guy! Luigi is being framed by his evil twin, Waluigi!
The "You're too young to be unhealthy" thing seriously strikes a chord as a chronic pain sufferer. Oof.
He's no hero... He's a modern day *FOLK HERO.*
What the difference?
I always enjoy your video clips. I find your analysis of current events to be extremely astute, interesting, and profound! Blessings! ~NNM
One CEO tied to one track - 10000 poor patients tied to the other which one would you send the train down ? Better still abolish health insurance and you dont need to send the train down either.
carl, its the fact that it is 100% tied to your job that makes it uniquely diabolical.
