I thought it was just a joke that maths is boring so the auditorium will never be full. But your suggestion is cooler.
3:55 This is actually a double joke - the pi symbol here is playing on the Hebrew letter Chet (which looks somewhat similar thereto), which is why there’s a little additional piece beside it (it’s the letter Yod, which, with the letter Chet, spells the word ‘Chai’, meaning ‘life’). So, the joke is that he’s wearing a necklace that essentially reads ‘life of pi(e)’ - or, conversely, ‘pi(e) is life’. Just some ‘food for thought’ (pun intended).
The letter isn’t Chai, it’s actually called Chet. The Chet with the Yod is pronounced Chai which does mean life, just a minor correction 😊

Everyone agrees that the dog with the box on its head is more fun than the mathematical joke,😂😂😂😂 that's why I love Homer, I solved many non-linear systems of simultaneous equations in the past when I was studying the kumon method, maybe you've already heard of this method, anyway, it's always cool to review these concepts through your brilliant mind Ellie! One of the only math jokes I know:
A biologist, a physicist and a mathematician were observing people getting in and out of a house, first they saw 3 people walk inside the house, but then 4 came out. The biologist said "They must have reproduced", the physicist said "There must be a mistake in my original prediction" and the mathematician said "The house will be empty if someone enters it"
I don't remember it very well, but it was something like this.

My two favourite maths jokes:
1) why do computer scientists get halloween and Christmas confused?
Because oct 31 = dec 25
2) three mathematicians walked into a bar. The bartender asked 'will you all be having a beer?'
The first mathematician said 'i don't know.' The second mathematician said 'i don't know. ' the third mathematician said 'yes.'

It's saying that Computer scientists get confused because the variables are confusing. If oct 25 = dec 25, then on halloween, it is Christmas, and vice versa.
As for the math one no idea
@@libanaliHD Oh! I get it now! I think its referring to the octal and decimal values of 31 and 25 respectively, which I guess are equal, thus confusing the computer scientists.

3:51 that is not a Greek Π, even though it resembles it. It is a Hebrew חי. While חי means "life", its numerical value is 18 (the Yud letter י = 10 and the het letter ח = 8). Many Hebrew math games use multiples of 18, for example when giving donations to the synagogue such as " 2 times חי" meaning 18 x 2 = $36, or "10 times חי" for a $360 donation. חי is called "chai", with the "ch" like a Scottish "ch" in "loch"

There is a missing negative on the left side of the equation for 'y'. It should read minus y squared plus 16y minus 64 equals etc etc.

it approximately equals 22/7
No, brother. I get it that you might be in a young class, maybe 7 or 8, and is just learning about this. π is an irrational number. Which means it cannot be represented as a rational number or a fraction. 22/7 is the closest fraction to π. Because, when we represent 22/7 as a decimal, it goes like 3.1428.... and more. But the real value is 3.1415926535... like that. It is infinite and has no end.
@sh52100 I don't know why everyone says 22/7 is the closest fraction when there are infinitely many fractions that are closer. Just take a ton of digits out into pi and write that as a fraction. Like the fraction 707963/5000000 is exactly 3.1415926 which is a crazy better approximation.
@@maxhagenauer24 Yes, but do you think you can just tell kids to memorize this large number when you can just multiply with 22/7 or 3.14 and get a close approximation.
@@sh52100 22/7 is definitely better to memorize, but that wasn't my point. You said 22/7 was the BEST approximation when it's not. Maybe you meant best as in the most accurate approximation of that size of a fraction or the best approximation to memorize.
Lisa, as I recall is in 3rd grade and Martin is in 4th grade, same as Bart. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems strange to expect 3rd and 4th grade kids to be already familiar with them intermediate algebra stuff. Maybe that's a math joke in itself. Simpson writers as I recall has a lot of math professionals in them.
