This demonstrates how much of genius Dr. Leo was. He interpreted an unknown alien language. learned enough about the G-Stone and reverse engineered Galeon enough to be able to create the vehicle Gaomachines. Imagine what he could have build if he had ONE functioning original Gaomachine.
I've always loved the final fusion scenes, since they demonstrate how well-designed GaoGaiGar was. Most mechs require us to be stretch our imaginations to grasp how the parts come together (Gravion and Godannar are in part guilty of this), but GGG was one of the few shows that actually designed its mechs in a way that the fusion and combinations MADE SENSE.
when you're a series created by the king of robot toys Takara Tomy, you know that the transformation sequences actually make sense for that 100% accurate DX toy that you can buy right in your local toy store. That's why the Japanese made Transformers also have these long reasonable looking transformation scenes.
I am very much camp "real robot better than super robot" but I cannot deny how gorgeous this old school animation it! Like damn! They do not make anime like this anymore and it's such a tragic loss!
Its funny you say this cause the final two episodes of this OVA clearly get transferred over to digital animation and do not look as good as all the prior episodes.

GaoGaiGar is one of my favorite series that has mechs because of stuff like this, I LOVE when a show..well..SHOWS how all the parts of a combination mech link together and the parts all moving like this.

My first intro to Mecha anime was as a kid...I was watching Voltron growing up in the 90's, old syth voice "Voltron Defender to the Universe" intro and censored all to heck and back. This is back before the anime boom in the states with stuff like DBZ and Gundam Wing. I got lucky one day year before last and got my hands on the complete Patlabor series..the movies, the TV series, the OVAs..all of it in a box collection for around 80 bucks.
The ability to deliver these cheesy lines while perfectly serious. I'm positive. The narrator has acquired the abilities of Leslie Nielsen... WITH THE HELP OF KIYOJI!

My god, this animation is gorgeous. It's hard to find animation that looks that pristine and intricate in modern anime even in feature films(although Redline or any Ghibli film made over the past decade are a few exceptions).
Without Genesic GaoGaiGar there would not BE a Gurren Lagann. there's a reason why GaoGaiGar is one of the most popular super robots in mecha historyright up there with Gunbuster, Getter Robo and Mazinger Z. Size has doesn't mater when courage in involved. YUUUUSHA!

Well, regarding about that Ideon issue, there are a few details: 1) When ANYTHING get smashed by the goldion hammer, it does no explode, it just turns into harmless light. Should that be the infinite energy of the Ideon, sure it would make quite a flash, but nothing more. 2) I am not completly sure, but there also seems to be a Gadget Tool that alows GGGG to create something similar the ES Windows, thing that would alow it to escape form Ideon explosion (and if it not, simply use the Pliers).
@Hedoro: Going by the movies, normal Gurren Lagann was able to stop a drill that Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann wasn't able to hold back. Which... makes perfect sense when you think about it. The Spiral Power requirements for STTGL had to be *insane*, so if you fed all that Spiral Power into normal Gurren Lagann without using it for combining, just imagine how powerful it would be. Just think about it like a mining drill: If you cut off the tip and try to use the back part to tunnel through something, it's not going to get very far; it only works because it focuses all of the effort on one tiny point, amplifying the effect. Similarly, focusing all of STTGL's power into normal GL allows it to break through things it couldn't stop before. Even if you're not going by the movies, regular Lagann was able to stop Lazengan's drill more easily than GL could fight the mecha off. If you think about it, that's one of the few Super Robot tropes that Gurren Lagann doesn't just gleefully embrace. It doesn't become more powerful by getting new forms; rather, its new forms are powerful because they use more Spiral Energy. The larger mechas' main advantage is that they put GL on the same scale as their opponents, while scaling down (from GL to Lagann when fighting Lordgenome, or from STTGL to normal GL when fighting the Anti-Spiral) allows all of the Spiral Power that Simon's pouring out to be focused into a smaller area, making it more potent.

Straight and Spiral Gao are just big ass knee drills. Broken Gao is the Right arm, has the power of Offence. Protect Gao is the Left arm, has the power of Defence. Gadget Gao is the wings and jetpack + lower arms, just has a shitload of weapon configurations.
Mikoto can survive in space for a shot time because she is a "semi-evoluder" or something like that. The transformation into Zonuda at the end of the tv series gave her some superhuman habilities (she was the only one to awake in final when all the other GGG memebers were affected by the virus-wanna-be of Palpareppa, too)
so..what happened to the other machines GaiGar used once he gets the real GaoMachines: decommissioned and scrapped for parts or destroyed or they on standby in emergencies?
Spoiler warning: The original GaoMachines were destroyed when a copy of Mamoru tried to destroy the Earth and used them to make his own GaoGaiGar. GaoFighGar, (Guy's robot at the start of GaoGaiGar FINAL) was destroyed by the 11 Sol Masters, who made the repli-Mamoru as well, who defeated Guy in combat.
If Gurren Lagann and GaoGaiGar fused two universes would be ripped apart in the process by the sheer energy required to power the fusion. Two universes would fall into the void.
GadgetGao's neck is much longer than that of a bird of prey. It is safe to say that the design of Gao machine is base upon a lizard, which in turn happens to be a dragon. Birds and Dragons are pretty much cousins anyways.
Do this robot/mech have any conection to Predaking (Transformers G1) Hasbro did buy a loot of random Japanes robots/mecha to populate its Transformers line.

so..what happened to the other machines GaiGar used once he gets the real GaoMachines: decommissioned and scrapped for parts or destroyed or they on standby in emergencies?

The original GaoMachines were destroyed when a copy of Mamoru tried to destroy the Earth and used them to make his own GaoGaiGar. GaoFighGar, (Guy's robot at the start of GaoGaiGar FINAL) was destroyed by the 11 Sol Masters, who made the repli-Mamoru as well, who defeated Guy in combat.

GadgetGao's neck is much longer than that of a bird of prey. It is safe to say that the design of Gao machine is base upon a lizard, which in turn happens to be a dragon.

I don't see how anyone can even think GL comes close to the level of awesome that is GGG. GL was nothing but a warm up for me when I moved on to GGG.

物質世界という宇宙に生まれた以上、どんな者にも終わりは訪れます。誕生と死の物質循環こそが、この物質世界の因果(理(ことわり))なのですから。
