At 38:40, the USS Winston rides by in the background. My husband served on this ship during one of his Vietnam tours. If any vets are interested. Not sure how they picked that ship, but it’s there, plain as day.

One of the all time classic lines in the movies. Jeff Chandler - "Get your filthy plane away from my ship".

Chiefs! Where would the United States Navy be without them?

I have this movie on DVD that I watch very often, and I have a friend who is building a large 1/96 scale scratch built model of an APA like this ship. And where yes this scene of Get your filthy plane away from my ship! is one of many great scenes in the movie there is one mistake in the scene. He had just ordered to stop all engines, then orders hard left when the plane is coming in when he never ordered the engines restarted so no the ship was not going to move without power....so it really made no sense to yell hard left when he should had remembered that he had just shut the engines down. But as any good Captain he shows his love for his ship but yelling....Get away from my ship, get your filthy airplane away from my ship!

The Nation of Japan deserved everything that we gave them and more. I constantly hear about the 2 bombs we dropped and all the people who died. And that was horrible, but I have to ask those people who look down on our use of those bombs? What about China, where Millions of Civilians were killed in direct executions by Solders. What about all of the camps where Japan keep prisoners and where they tortured them to death? The list goes on and on and Japan for decades refused to even admit to their own War Crimes.

I had uncles from that era that had the same regards on the matter. After reading a rap sheet of unspeakable atrocities they committed, I'm the same way.

Not to mention the batan death march. and so on. I do Not feel sorry for America dropping the bombs on Japan.....They were given the chance twice to surrender before the bombs were ever used and they refused. So we did what we had to do to end the war....And after attacking Pearl harbor in a sneak attack, and all the crimes Japan did in that war. I don't want to hear them Bitch about it. in my opinion they got off luckier than they deserved. Their emperor should had stood trail for war crimes as he was in full agreement with his military leaders about everything Japan did...and yet he was allowed to remain in power and treated like he was innocent while he let his military leaders take full blame and tried....and hung. They started the war, and they reaped what they sew....So as I said they have No right to bitch about what happened they caused it, they can deal with it!

Our use of the bomb saved many American lives. Whether the crowd that complains about our use of the bomb likes it or not, a Commander in Chief's (and President's) major responsibility in war---at least it was this way in World War II---is to save the lives of his men. Our use of the bomb probably saved hundreds of thousands of American lives. It also saved many Japanese lives (for those of you who count the total casualties included lives lost by our opponent). I'm far from anti-Japanese. I've great respect for the people of Japan. But once they delivered us into the Second World War, it was up to our leaders to keep our casualties as low as possible.

I remember my dad telling me about a gunex they had on his ship USS Bexar APA-237, (sister ship to the Belinda) he was stationed onboard from 61-63. They had a 5" gun and were shooting at a towed target, well, they hit between the target and the tug towing it. It wasn't much longer till the 5" gun was removed and the Gunners Mates were re-assigned other duties.

The special effects in these scenes aged terribly.
