I have a Laguiole en Aubrac, and the blade slams against the spring when closed. What's the point of ever sharpening it? I won't be buying another. There are too many better knives out there.

You are actually right. It's demonstrated how it's supposed to be closed. It's a work of art.
Then you don't know how to make a blade.
