  • By no means is our video perfect, but it offers a window into the magnificent world of Baptisia species and cultivars. Baptisia are American natives that have never reached their full potential in American gardens. May this video provide a glimpse into their wonderful attributes.

    Baptisia Notes and Commentary
    By Michael A. Dirr
Baptisia comprise 20 native U.S. species and several varieties. Baptisia australis, wild blue indigo; B. alba, white wild indigo, and B. sphaerocarpa, yellow wild indigo, are the most common. Many hybrid cultivars with unique flower colors are available. Thirty patented cultivars are known with more in the pipeline (www.nurserymag....
Baptisia require minimal care once established. Well drained soil and full sun are the basic requirements. Plants perform well in acidic and basic soils. Ideally plant in spring to build a strong root system and crown which houses the many flower buds for the following season. Purchase container-grown plants with strong root systems.
Foliage emerges early in spring. March in Zone 8a with flowers opening a month later. In the Dirr garden, flowers on seedling plants have opened on April 4 and as late as May 15. The green to gray- and blue-green foliage remains effective into fall and is deer-resistant.
Seeds germinate readily and result in remarkable variation in growth habit, foliage, stem, and flower colors. Collect seeds in June-July, clean, store dry or soak seeds for 24 to 48 hours, retain only those that sink, sow in well drained medium with germination occurring in 2 to 4 weeks.
Cuttings can be rooted from superior seedlings using a commercial root promoting formulation (see NM article). The photos show the great variation in characteristics that occurred in the Dirr Garden.
As an incentive to increase enthusiasm in Baptisia, I am sharing seed collected from the Dirr garden. For a packet of ~200 seeds (first 100 people) send a SSAE (Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope) to Michael A. Dirr, P.O. Box 327, Watkinsville, GA 30677. Plant America with Baptisia!

Great video Michael and great information. Baptisia is one plant I have never used in my designs or in my home garden. I am suddenly motivated to use a variety of this plant for the next client that requests native perennials in their design! I live about 15 miles from Tony Avent so I may see what he has to offer. Thanks again for this video!

I loved this video. I have had my Baptisia for several years. I don't remember how I purchased it, but it is my favorite plant..I am in Kansas. No nursery here carries it. I enjoyed this video, I love the passionate way Dr. Dirr loves this plant and explains it's potential. I'm old now, but like him I hope to grow more Baptisia and share information. MORE VIDEOS PLEASE.

I have three growing in my yard now. Australis, lemon meringue, and pink truffles. I have them planted a good 20-30 feet apart, but I'm going to try and collect some seeds and see what happens.

First of all, thank you for this video! I fell in love with Baptisia probably 35 years ago when I saw my first 6 foot clump of it. I only have one small plant and unfortunately I planted it a little bit high so I’m hoping it survived the winter here in my zone 6B garden. It’s very difficult to pick a favorite, but I think I’m going to go with Purple Haze. B-17-22 is pretty spectacular as well.

I live in Dawson county on a dirt road. We've got lots of native white & yellow Baptisia. I moved a few that were about to be lost to development & they've really taken off their 2nd year. Hard as nails, very nice plants. Our roadsides & right of ways are being over managed & important natives are being lost. Save these important plants folks! Bees & butterflies are in decline 😢

Purple Haze has to be my favorite. The lovely purple stems really make it! The only baptisia I have in my garden is Blueberry Sunday from a native plant sale... but this video makes me want to try more.
Btw this video may have so many views because you asked for engagement by asking what everyone's favorite was. The UA-cam algorithm loves that sort of thing. (People commenting on a video.) I've got to believe more people are more interested in hydrangeas.
On the other hand, there's probably not a lot of content about baptisia anywhere on UA-cam and tons about hydrangeas.

Built a big (for me) hillside garden for a client/friend who is thankfully a patient person!
Baptisia was supposed to be a big part of it as was Amsonia h. These and a lot of other things put in as plugs in April. Baptisia and Amsonia were fairly small plugs (50s) ... Took three years of care and they are finally filling out. other plants took off, of course, rudbeckia, asters, catmint, penstemon, etc.
Lesson learned and Future gardens included larger plants to start for these players.
That said, they are worth the wait for sure.
