Dirt Cheap Dungeons is fun company name that we use. What we are is a small team in Bend Oregon, that started out as a D&D group, that produces all of our products in the USA. We also use 30% post consumer recycled materials in the plastic as well. Everything in that box, to include the box itself, is of the highest quality product that we spent over a year creating. What you are looking at in the review is our largest set and more than most people will ever actually need. You can easily fill a 4 foot by 4 foot table filled to the brim with dungeon rooms with that set. We even have 2 smaller sets for those that don't need such a large set. @@Coswagrigus Thank you, that is very true. I assume that is also the unpainted cost for DF as well, we created our pieces to be pre-textured without the need for paint.

A cheap way to use these to get 2nd (or 3rd) floor would be to drop a sheet of cheap plexiglass over the first level.

Dirt Cheap Dungeons A majority of people playing, specifically of the newer and younger demographic who don’t have these resources, often don’t have the funds to buy miniatures let alone just spend over $100 on a single set (as large as it might be in comparison to others) of environment pieces. Especially when simply using one inch graph paper is a FAR cheaper option.

I just looked into it and to be fair, 300 dollars for it isnt a bad deal for the biggest set. Granted i dont have the money to throw down at it right now but its definitely something you can save up for. I think its a great thing. The fact that you guys say its durable is a MAJOR plus for me since my friends have a dog thats quite rambunctious.

$300 isn't anything even resembling "dirt cheap"

I spent more on the first few maps I had printed out professionally on a large format printer and that was as an employee of the shop that did it with a discount, and I didn’t go for Uber high quality.
It’s not as cheap as using paint to print across multiple pages with your 2D battlemap that you “made yourself” (many DMS are buying maps, adventures, or subbing to Patreon a that release them so the cost is hard to calculate so let’s assume they are just photoshopping em and stealing assets with google searches). Plus unless you have one of the more economical ink sources (the crazy inkjet that comes with a gas tank full of ink or instant ink) even printing at home ain’t cheap long term.
Painting these will probably cost more than acquiring them.
The smaller sets are around $50-60 USD. It's a good value when you start comparing other modular terrain sets.
I got my Kickstarter set super happy with it I love the no floors generic style this way you can use different types of game mats for flooring and not have to buy several different sets of dungeon tiles costing a lot more money, Setup is quicker than dungeon tilesets where you have to build the floor and walls and all the details.
I also use dungeon tiles and such to flavor the dungeon
Just saw an ad for these and thought they looked cool, nice to see a video review. I think the price is reasonable for the amount of building material you get.
I bought a set on the kickstarter. Only had a chance to use it once so far, but our group already loves it.
Rather than paint them traditionally, if you just went for an oil paint wash you could add definition and a little color modularity then just spray clearcoat over it after and it should be pretty robust.
We embossed the design, but the eco-safe plastics we use have embedded natural fibers to make the stone work have stone-like flecks to make them somewhat authentic as well. So no need to paint them right out of the box, but if painting is your thing - it makes an excellent 'base' for whatever enhancements you decide to do to them!
I think I'll print my half height walls with the 3D printer... so my players can actually see what is going on.
F Huber yeah I agree, anyone with a 3D printer would be better off printing their own sets. $1.00 a piece isn’t much of a selling point when the same amount of plastic from and FDM printer would run you $0.10.
Dungeon dudes got the height a bit off. The walls are 1.75" tall, and extensive play testing show this height still works well for visibility.
Our products are injection molded with eco-safe texturized plastics that are far more durable and precise than what can be achieved with 3D printing's limited quality. The clips and other intricate parts are too detailed for 3D printers to do, as the layer lines would cause the pieces to snap. As well, the sheer length of walls and doorways would take a month of 3D printer time, and nearly cost you as much in filament (we know from a year+ of prototyping). It is way more cost-effective to just buy these from us.
A good use of a 3D printer in this case is to use our sets for the many redundant walls lengths in a dungeon, but use a 3D printer to make the occasional custom walls/doorways/ or other accessories (thrones, etc.) to populate the dungeon with.
@@dirtcheapdungeons9675 PLA is more durable than you claim, I've made gears out of it, little walls that will never have force applied won't be a problem. 3D printers are more accurate than you claim, I have a $180 Chinese clone printer, it's resolution is 0.1mm, plenty for little plastic walls and little plastic clips. I'm not sure about print time, but based on you exaggerating your previous claims, I'll venture a guess that it will be significantly shorter than what you say it is.
As far as cost goes, 1Kg of filament costs about $20, $300 / $20 = 15, I could buy 15 Kg of filament for what you're charging. There's no way that little box weighs anywhere near 15 Kg. If the wall is 1.75 inch tall and .125 inch wide, 15 Kg of filament would print about 8000 linear inches of wall. Your stuff costs 37 times as much as 3D printed! Even if someone didn't have a 3d printer, they could buy one outright and 6 Kg of filament for what you're charging.
Smearing competition isn't a good marketing strategy, it turns people off. Take me for instance, since you smeared 3D printing, I will *never* buy your product, out of principle, and I will go out of my way to steer other potential buyers away from your product.
Oh my god this is a godsend, literally ordering the biggest set right now. I was doing corridors from lego pieces and it was wonky, looking bad, this is a magnificent investment.
If the walls are all assembled, does this still aline with a normal grid, or with each piece does it misalign a little bit therefore after like 20 walls it’s off by a whole square?
You only showed it with a felt bottom, and I would use a battle mat under it.

The walls were engineered to align to a 1 inch grid even if you built out all 54 ft in a straight line. Although that is the equivalent of a 4-5 story building and I am not sure if you will find the space. We personally use Battlemats and Megamats (Chessex) or GameMatz as a grid system, our sets go along with just about anything though. A couple of our product testers forwent the grid and just used rulers when they needed to determine distances.
I rememeber how we constructed walls out of cardboard which we covered with paper on which we've drawn the wall designs. We became pretty good with constructing those and then also started doing furnitures, stairs, trees and other stuff. At some point we had a school project of making a model of a childrens playground - it was supposed to be a crossover project between art and tech classes. At that time we were so good with doing those cardboardstands that we rocked that project so hard, they called in our parents and seriously asked them to stop helping us with our school projects as one could see that our project was way to professional to be done by schoolkids.
at a dollar a piece thts awesome possums. but $300 at once is a bit steep. if they have smaller priced packages and priced accordingly so people can “add to” over time then itll do well, but thts imo. ill look into this fer sure!

Dirt Cheap Dungeons I saw your product listing, the rogue bundle, while having a good amount of pieces is still super steep for a lot of new and old players.
I saw you had an angle adapter pack for about 30$ that is way more affordable. If you had a package for that cost many more would bite.

For the people that D&D is kinda their side thing, quite honestly the Rogue Set (our smallest, $109.99) is much more their speed. At 18+ linear feet of walls, doorways and stairs for $109.99, we offer 2x the coverage of our closest competitors for similar price. The Rogue Set is long enough to give you about 12 rooms for $109.99. This is compared to Dwarven Forge which is 3-rooms for $75. We include shipping free within the US as well!
In our experience, 12-rooms with encounters typically takes about 3 hours of D&D game time.

Our motto is 'we play together, we pay together'. As group of 5, we all chipped in 20bucks and got the 100$ set. We do the same thing for the sourcebooks. That way, it is 'Dirt cheap' and boy...is it our our money's worth! ( No, I'm not sponsored by them, but I'm up for some deals Dirt Cheap Dungeons ;) )
The "they're around a dollar each" sales pitch isn't as impressive to me as it's being presented. I could hand-make pieces and feel okay with getting a dollar for it but for something that is being produced in bulk, it's a bit much. To be fair, I say this as someone that could be fairly content with theater of the mind style play.
I just don't see benefits outweighing the costs here.
They do look nice, though.
I mean, we use a lot of Dwarven forge, which is a Lot more expensive than this. So compared to other dungeon sets out there, you get a lot here for a good price.

Cost coverage analysis: our Rogue Set gets you 216 linear inches, at $0.50/inch. The next closest we have found is Wyloch, which is $99 for about 88 linear inches, at $1.125/inch.

At first when they laid down one wall section it looked very wobble, and I thought the product isn't going to work very well. But then I saw the multiple wall sections and corners and such, with the connectors, then I knew this would work just fine for the vast majority of uses.
Now I just need to figure out when to fit this into the post-Christmas budget.
I got my set from the kickstarter. Only draw back for me is the hinge system. I've broken 3 hinges on my first assembly.
Other than that the set added a lot to my table and I'm happy with it.
The hinges can definitely be a little challenging to get on, but they do hold firm and allow for the doors to open when you get them on. We tried to give everyone extra for that reason. The hinges are a bit of a struggle with first installation. I found if you try to get one corner on first, it's easier to clip in.

So I picked this up a couple of weeks ago. It's totally worth the money. My group loves it. Once you put it together it's incredibly sturdy. I draw out my own battle maps on cardboard I use a couple of peices on double sided tape (so it doesn't slide) and it's done. I've looked at quite a bit of 3d terrain over the past year. This is simply the cheapest and most customizable that I've found. I will not have to buy anything else.
Oh and the shipping is really fast.

I would have liked an overall thoughts section at the end explaining who this is aimed at, what are alternatives, etc. Without it being an actual review it feels a bit more like a straight ad instead of Dungeon Dudes content. I'm not opposed to sponsored videos as a watcher but I hope future ones bring more to the table.
I see quite a few people in the comments, talking about the price of the set. Yes if one person have to buy a set then sure, 100$ to 300$ is a lot of money.
But in my opinion getting something like this for your roleplaying group, should be a group purchase. This of cause is assuming you are good friends that trust each other.
Heck if you a really tight-knit group, surprise your DM with something like this as a gift.
Though in general, I would recommend you talk in your group about if even getting the set that is in the video is even something you want in your game, players and DM alike.
It would suck if for an example the DM bought this, and the players hated it .
Another perspective is that it's a one time purchase, just like the core rule books you buy. Me personally, I use a battle map with squares on it, and use wet erase markers.

Yeah, the Legend Set is a pretty tightly packed box, but the Rogue and Knight Sets have more space available and so are much easier to pack and carry. The Legend Set is better for customers with dedicated gaming rooms, that wish to pack their large sets away on occasion without filling entire closets.

The bottoms look so small, little round pieces, that it looks like the walls will fall down easy. Is that an issue?? Wonder why they didn't put bigger bases. At least slightly bigger

I like the product review... Granted whole set for 300$ is a bit steep sounding. But, the amount of stuff you're getting for price is somewhat reasonable. The other option is a 3d printer... And the wait times and whatever else may come of self printing your own.
I noticed a kickstarter reviewer said doir hinges were an issue and that it did seem a bit fragile while you were trying to assemble them...
Painting could be a small issue... But then again as you boys mentioned, a non issue for most non OCD DMs...
Personally I love the look and the amount of product seems pretty good for the price.
And 200 and 100$ options and 30$ build up sets isn't too harsh on some budgets.

Thanks for posting this. I missed the kickstarter and was waiting for the site to start selling this stuff and this video basically announced it for me. I just bought the legendary set moments ago with the angular expansion. People who say $300 is too much for this much dungeon terrain have clearly not done the research. Most dungeon terrain is bulky, heavy and needs painting (also, quite expensive). I love that this can be used straight out of the box and is organized so nicely.

Nice review! And for anyone worried about the $300, they also sell sets for $200 and $100, and it seems their diagonal adapters pack also contains some walls for $30, so you don't have to spend it all at once. And yes, it really is $1 for 1 piece.

This is their legend set that we reviewed, they have much smaller sets available for much lower costs. This set could cover an entire large gaming table.

This looks like a fantastic deal. I'm going to look into getting the smaller set.
The $289.99 Legend Set, that was reviewed, is our largest set and is geared for dedicated D&Ders that likely have dedicated game rooms and wish to set up 40+ room dungeons and leave them in place.
The $109.99 Rogue Set (our smallest) and the $199.99 Knight Set, are more geared towards quick-set-up-and-tear-down portability. The Rogue Set is good for about a 12 room dungeon (with encounters, typically a 3 hour game) and the Knight Set is good for about a 26 room dungeon (with encounters, a hardcore 6 to 8 hour gaming session). There is more space in these sets for ease of packing as well.
One of the best things is that we mostly produce these products ourselves. So we can produce quickly as needed if/when our inventory runs low, rather than our competitors that outsource their manufacturing to outside the US and have backorders of months or more. We can restock our inventory very quickly and you are supporting a small Oregon company!
Interesting product, but as a European shipping directly from the US and associated cost (and risk of getting it stuck in customs, on top of the usual import tax) is as usual a deal breaker for me.

Hey Monty & Kelly - have you guys looked into GTG games minis? I won't link here, as I don't want to seem like i'm marketing for them (not affiliated at all). As someone that's relatively new to DMing (and playing) DND, things like this really appeal to me to aid in storytelling. I don't have any minis, and always feel like i'm a b-grade DM when i constantly use dice for stand-ins for monsters and what not. The GTG minis seemed like a good way to quickly and cheaply supplement my storytelling, but a little concerned about quality of the product, specifically ripping and flaking. Hoping maybe you have some insight into the product before I commit some money to them. Thanks!

It is funny apparently no one listens to video, where they say this is the most expensive set, do some research and stop whining about $300. The only thing required for hobby is book, dice and paper, a lot of accessories are luxuries. But this is one of the cheapest options if want to expand, hence the name

There is dungeon&.towns for fantasy worlds Kickstarter that is the same thing but way cheaper and less less expensive! And imo it looks way better than this too...
The one you mention is also made of cardboard if durability is something that would concern a person.
@@MrKleen that s true, but it seems quite thick and plastified. So if you re not a brute it should be enough to last quite a bit.
But hey, at least we got options, so if you prefer this one, it's fine by me.
Shawn They’ve already released a couple of (ground focused) sets over the past couple of years and they’ve proven to stand the test of time so far.
We've seen them. And it looks like a pretty good set and design admittedly! Pricing seems on par or bit higher than ours... There are always pluses and minuses to different designs. Ours would be more durable, and more eco-friendly, and would be easier to customize with dremel and paints to do what you want. Theirs does allow for quick temporary design changes with a marker easy....
My concern as an engineer for their design would be in humid environments, as the paperboard would likely swell and may cause the plastic sheeting to delaminate... or if the edge is rubbed, if that would cause delamination as well. But I like what they do and think the market is good enough to cater to many designs.
First off a disclaimer that I don't currently own anything from Dirt Cheap Dungeons (honestly they weren't on my radar before the vid). Also, I don't have an issue with the Fantasy World Creator set. Seems very interesting. Looking at what you get I'm not sure the price is "way cheaper" or "less less expensive" as the OP was saying, but I'm always happy to see more options. I truly hope that both sets are very successful for both companies.
It's always funny how "cheap" many of us gamers are. Look through the comments "$300? blah blah blah. I could make it at home for $20 and a vanilla Zinger", "How come it's not free? You're crazy, blah blah". You'd think none of us have jobs lol. Try buying 300 pieces of Dungeon Forge stuff (or 100 pieces for that matter) and see how much you'd pay versus the approx $1 a piece from Dirt Cheap Dungeons.

The amount you get compared to most other 3D dungeon building terrain. They have other sets for lower costs. The set shown could make a dungeon bigger than most gaming tables.
I would be interested in purchasing STL files if they were in the market to such such things.

I know some people have dnd and rpg as their big hobbies, but for a lot of people DND is kind of a side thing. These people are not gonna spend 300 dollars on a dungeon building kit. I don't know if this is a good buisiness model for them.

Swords & Six Siders combined with Delta's Book of War. I already have a campaign of sorts. Convert Inches into CM. I have been using Pendraken's Dungeon. Just looking for more options.
On a recent flight from New York to London was able to set up a battle on a airplane lap tray.
I also run Fantasy Trip 6mm based to 7mm washers. I use custom laser cut 8mm hexes out of 2mm thick wood. To make mega hexes just glue wood hexes together.

Bases for 10mm. Then just paint dungeon floor with magnetic paint.

My goodness, I know this video is older, but I’m shocked at the amount of cheapskates in this comment section. As someone who’s crafted, and painted, terrain for decades, nowadays I’d be shaking these guys arms off, for a TON of terrain pieces, easy and quick to setup, for $300…….
Compared to what we make for a living hourly, I can assure everyone here that crafting your own terrain is FAR LESS than minimum wage, compared to what you lose monetarily just buying this…..
