I went into Wicked with low expectations as well, musicals can be hit or miss with me and the trailers didn’t impress me. I’ve heard of the Broadway musical, but all I know is that it had Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth, and the 2 most known songs, Popular and Defying Gravity, mainly because I’ve heard snippets in shows and movies like New Girl and Zombieland. But the movie is surprisingly really good. I was instantly charmed and with Jon M. Chu between this and In the Heights, shows he has a knack for creating quality musicals and the performances from the main leads definitely help. I knew Cynthia Erivo was going to be good, my first introduction to her was with Bad Times at the El Royale which I thought she was excellent in. Ariana Grande though I was skeptical of, obviously she’s a talented singer and I know she had Broadway experience, but my only really exposure to her acting was during her Nickelodeon days on shows like Victorious, which even as someone who grew up with those shows, they ain’t the best showcase for someone’s acting skills. But she crushed it and I thought not just her chemistry with Erivo was really good, but her comedic timing was great. I’m excited for Part 2, great review as always my man!
Great review Joe, I have seen the musical version when it was on tour I personally enjoyed it and I would love to see it again, and I am planning to see this movie and I am surprised that this film turned out to be better than I thought it’s gonna be. Musical movie adaptations are somewhat hit or miss, some are good and others are bad especially that Cats movie came out nearly 5 years ago! (Never speak of that movie 🤮) Don’t worry I won’t spoil what happens at the end of the broadway musical version! 🙂
