- How does our scoring work? We delve into popular board game questions we are asked, like how many times we play a board game. Other questions can be if we are going to review popular BGG games like Eclipse 2nd edition or John Company 2nd edition. How come euro games like Wingspan are evaluated highly but then we say we hate it? Maybe War of the Ring's accessibility can speak some more information on our rating (remember average for recommender score is not bad). Hopefully this video will clarify some of these frequently asked questions that we get in the comment section!

Totally disagree with the person who said your reviews are too long. I get more out of your videos than from anyone else when deciding to get a game or not, and the level of detail you go into is what I appreciate the most. It feels like actual analysis and not just someone telling me what a game is.
I agree completely, it's better and cheaper to watch a shelfside video about a game I find interesting and evaluating objectively than spending my money on FOMO.
45-1hr is just fine
the issue isnt the length, its that sometimes they get soo nit picky and hung up and typically non issues to most that it inflates the video time. but its all about preference.
I’ll second this comment, 100%
And you could always skip to the end if you want a quick review.
@@thereal4579 but thats the beauty in what they do. the heavy analysis is there for those that want it, and those that don't can just skip past those parts. totally agree its all about preference, and their format has something for everyone :)
You and Daniel are some of the most trustworthy and honest reviewers on YT. I like the length and depth of your reviews as they are appropriate to the game being reviewed. If people desire short (and incomplete) reviews then they have plenty of choice elsewhere. Your scoring system is spot on, and there is no need to change that (I thought it was obvious how it worked, but I spend time ensuring I watch the complete review). You both are a credit to the hobby and I can only see you both growing further.
I very much appreciate the level of detail you put into the reviews, especially often overlooked aspects, like the texture of the components or the convenience of the rulebook. I know the challenge that creators face in making material both informative and engaging, and feel you're doing a great job with this channel. Keep up the good work!
One thing I really appreciate about this channel is that Ashton, Daniel, etc. all have different styles of games they enjoy more than others, I use the recommender score to review if the intent and appeal of the game out of the box is solid, and then use the individual scores to identify if that kind of player would enjoy it. If anything, I would maybe find a third guy that is a lot more casually into board games to give his perspective and score. You guys are doing a great job and your reviews are really accessible, hope even more folks find their way to the channel.
I love how your chart of 1-10 has adjectives. This helps people understand a 5 isnt bad. Not every game is a 7/10!!!
haha, always amuses me to see the WTF as a adjective :D -Ashton
One thing I often try to consider when evaluating games is: how fun is this game when you lose?
If everyone playing together is of equal skill level, or at least roughly equal across multiple different games, then statistically speaking you're going to lose more often than you win. If losing a game makes it not fun, people are much less likely to enjoy it. Party games are often still fun even when you lose. Co-op games can be frustrating to lose, but at least you lost together, and in my experience that makes people more likely to want to go again. Very often I've met people who will play a game once and if they lose that first time they won't want to play it again, but that seems more common with some games than others, so it's not just because of the people.
Well said! Some fun bit of gaming philosophy -Ashton
For what it's worth, I really like the length of your videos because you are going really deep in them. I find I walk away with almost a complete understanding of the games you review and it's very easy for me to tell if I'd enjoy a game after watching one of your videos. Your content is really high quality
length is one of the best qualities of your reviews, keep the good job up
I wish a great 2024 for your channel guys, keep having fun !
Thank you for addressing the sponsor stuff. That’s brave of you to not publish review of sponsored game you did not like
I think your reviews are not too long. I really like your reviews. It helps me choose what to buy. Even though you didn't love tainted grail your review gave me a good warning about what I was going to get into. Thanks for what you do.
Excellent explanation!!! Super channel!!! Don't change a thing!!!
thank you! More to come :) -Ashton
I absolutely love your rating scoring system! I used to review books and part of my review always included whether or not I was the target audience. Because, as a reviewer, you are not always the target audience, and if you don't mention how that affects your end review, then you're doing your readers/ viewers a disservice. 10/10 Will continue to watch your content in the future. 😋
Awesome stuff! Yeah it's been a long time coming to talk about it, and it really helps to see how the game WOULD be fun for others! -Ashton
you guys are great, keep at it.
Bro, i really like the long videos. Happy new year🎉🎉🎉
haha, happy new year man! -Ashton
I really like this channel!!!!
Your comment about "if you can't trust a sponsored review, that's fine" genuinely makes me trust your content more. I get suspicious when people have a list a mile long as to why you _should_ trust their sponsored reviews and treat you like the bad guy for making the accusation, but when someone just says "yeah, sometimes we get paid for a review, but I try to be honest, sometimes our honesty means the sponsor drops out because we weren't nice enough", it builds up my trust because yeah, that does happen, and if you accept that some people are just not going to accept it and keep moving forward, then that's the sort of person I want to trust. It shows that you're doing it for your reasons and no one else's, and you just happen to make a little money along the way. That's just the dream, man!
I love these little behind the scene videos.
Also, on the subject of sponsored videos, did you ever hear anything from any company (either game maker or insert maker) regarding the Frosthaven Organizer review?
You are the only game reviewer I subscribe to that has not created a top 10 of 2023 list. Any thought to doing one? I'm very curious but I also expect it to have lots of interesting things apart from all the other top 10 lists out there.
haha, we were gonna do one for Daniel, but didn't have time! But we do have a top gaming in general coming up! -ashton
I'm really glad that you guys treat the 1/10 score the way you do. It's always annoyed me how anything below a 7 is treated as bad by both the reviewer and consumer. 5/10 should be treated as average and its always confused me as to why it isn't.
I want more speed reviews with Daniel, but I don't know if you'd be able to maintain quality doing more of those.
Thanks for the insight and explanations! I know I was one of the people who asked why you review games you don't like, and it wasn't as a criticism - I think part of me felt bad if you had just spent 12+ hours being miserable, just to make the video I was watching. So I'm glad to learn the extra layer that you enjoy the process and making the content, even if the game isn't one you enjoy.
Heyo! Yeah it was a great question, and it definitely spurred me to make this vid! -Ashton
@@Shelfside The extra layer, is that I know my partner just released two games (Apiary and Wyrmspan) that are both popular, and might not be the best fit for your preferences. In my mind, I would have felt a bit more personally guilty if it seemed like it "forced" you to grind through a negative experience!
I always liked the scoring system to many games are between 7 and 10 in other peoples scoring not using the range. Also I agree with have to play a game many times to get to know the game, example my wife and ark nova, first time loved it, second time hated it, third that is pretty good.
I’m surprised you don’t get a question about your logo looking extremely similar to shelf clutter often enough to include it here. Rather than the joke about Daniel and you looking similar it seems these logos are actually super close in design and I wonder if that was by accident or if there was an S stock photo used by both of you 😊 (I agree with you that you guys look pretty dang different but I’ve seen siblings look really different so might just be people asking if this is a board gaming family rather than them just being kind of crappy humans)
Agreed the time stamps make the lengths just fine... Shoutout to that legendary review of Aeon Trespass Odyssey. Wasn't planning on getting it, but I was there for the meta content.
For the memes, just do a comedy skit trying to imitate that board game review girl that talks really fast and does her reviews within a minute. I can't seem to find the account... Would be funny to do remote Collab with her to appease these short review folks
Love your rating scale! Same as mine. 5 is average, people!
A game can have many different ratings. Chess is an excellent abstract strategy game, still I my interest playing it is average. So I want to give it two ratings...
Some games are amazing at the "correct" player count, while it is bad at a specific player count.
im still ready for a 3 hour review of voidfall in 2025
I've always been curious if your friends get paid if they're involved in your videos in some way, or if they're involved in that brainstorming phase.
Keep doing your own thing Shelfside, you can never please everyone. Respecting other people's opinion and agreeing to disagree is uncommon on the Internet, sadly.
Thanks mate! More stuff coming :D -Ashton
Great, what happen to Cuba Libre?
good question! Hopefully I can play it again this year! -Ashton
Here’s another question. Do you ever think you’ll be just a cog in the big board game industry pipeline that goes from publisher to consumer through you. Essentially making you a commercial or bad, and basically feeding into consumerism and FOMO. Do you think you’ll ever burn out on playing board games.
I tend to choose games that have above 7 bgg rating, but at the end it comes to personal preference and once in a while I end up with good games that I don’t enjoy that much. That just how it is. Happy New Year guys! 🎉
You could do two videos. One as usual. Then a 5-minute shorter video only giving your two scores and an extremely short version of why.
Might be useful... But also, the Algorithm might accidentally murder the channel. 🎲🎲
@@BrandonGraham - Usually I would ask, "How so?" But this is UA-cam, the destroyer of content creators. 🤣
@@BrandonGraham - Half of my comments get deleted by UA-cam's algorithm, with no reason or explanation. So, I see your point.
@@BrandonGraham - I was once banned for 24 hrs because I answered a question in a video talking about hair loss. I wasn't given any way or form to argue on my behalf. 🙄
@@BrandonGraham - Now, for some weird reason, all my comments are held for 20 seconds before showing up, and half get deleted before the 60 seconds the algorithm uses to determine whether it will allow the comment to stay.
Wtf Longer videos are always better. That guy who said shorter is better is kid
69th like 😎
In my rating, every game that's above a 7.5 is a GOOD game and every game above a 8 is actually REALLY good!! At the end most games are between 7.5 and 8 and some games elevate above 8 (my favourite games), every game that's under 7 is not very good and every game under 6 is already not recommendable!!! It's a bit weird of a rating, but I just don't rate games beneath a 5!! 😂
taking payment to scrap reviews for games seems absolutely awful
Love your channel and reviews, but I gotta say: if you have to explain your rating system so often, doesn’t that mean it’s still too confusing?
I mean I get it, but I just don’t think the complexity is worth what you are trying to do. Honest feedback: simplify! Just give a game a single rating per person, including all the critiques you have.
It will make more sense for most of your viewers, and shorten review time. Think of yourselves like a game or manual - don’t you want to be as clear and streamlined as possible? I think your channel would be better for it.
In any case, you guys are awesome. Keep up the stellar work! 😊
One specific example: I watched the Last Light review, and I heard you ask the question: is this even a good idea? And I thought, surely this is about to get a 9 out of 10, because based on everything I just heard this seems like a great idea! And then in the critique it will get dinged for rules, production, etc. Instead, it got a 5 out of 10, and then the personal score was a 7, so it was exactly the opposite of what I expected based on the review. I was so confused.
In the end, not a big deal. I got what I needed out of the review, and I agreed with all the points. I just think it could have been simpler, clearer and faster.
I like the concept of two scores, but a few extra words in the review could really clear things up. Like, "we give it a 5/10." "if your jam is light card games with the family, we'd give it a 7/10." Something like that.
Ultimately, I don't care about the numbers. Their tastes are different than mine, so I listen to the rest of the stuff. But obviously other people do care. 🤷
I don’t think your rating system makes no sense. I just think it does nothing for me. It’s way too complicated and ends up just confusing me every time again and again. Recommender sounds like you are trying to objectively evaluate a game or rather pretend you are average Joe. I just don’t see how that’s possible.
Have you never had a game where you think "I would recommend this to people but I personally don't like it"?
