Great comparison, Allie! What an ingenious idea to place Miyuki and Tohos on a needle with stoppers. This will help me id some older tubes/packages of seeds beads that were not labeled. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. More than once I have tried to make something using both Miyuki and Toho beads together in one project and have had problems with the beads not fitting. Now I know why.

So funny, I just ran into a pattern where I tried to use both Miyuki and Toho. Didn't work. The difference in sizes really made a difference.

Thank you so very much for educating your viewers on the size differences on the 2 major brands of seed beads. My big issue is when I've got an idea, I have to go and run out right away to get my supplies. The closest place for me to go is the garment district on 6th Avenue between 42nd and 34th Streets. I'm finding that the 3 main suppliers of any seed beads at all are Bead Center, Toho Sohji and Fun2Bead. The only wholesale shop who carries all 3 brands is Toho Sohjhi. The main brand carried in these stores is Matsuno in 12.0. (For some reason or another, the popular size of 11.0 in any brand is so rare to find in the fasion district.) I'm still so confused trying to figure out the size difference between 11.0 and 12.0. I held up a small package of the Miyuki brand of size 11.0 to compare to a package of the Matsuno brand in size 12.0 and I'm having a difficult time with myself trying to notice the difference. I apologize in hasseling you with such a stupid question, but I have been driving myself crazy for a little over a year with this small issue of seed beads, now.
We do not use Matsuno at all because it is not the same top quality as Miyuki or Toho. All Miyuki & Toho beads are sold on our website www.PotomacBeads.com, where usually shipments should be in NYC in 2-3 days.
Potomac Bead Company Thank you again, Alley. Yes, I think I'll go this route when I go to purchase your Avas' and O Beads. Better quality and you sell them by generous bulk in a tube, rather than this tiny little crappy square packaging, which is very tedious to open up! ...and you're correct. Those Matsunos appear so sloppily jaggad, rather than smooth like the Miyuki and Toho.
Hi, Alli, thanks so much for the tips on the 2 seed beads. I personally love miyuki and toho. I also have Czech glass seed beads sold in tubes that are very consistent. These are the 3 brands I use. I recently did a bezeled swarovski rivoli with toho,miyuki and superduos and they worked great together. The earrings are going to be bezeeled rivoli long tassels. I have not had any trouble so far combining the 2 brands together. I know others do but I consider myself lucky. Thanks so much again, sincerely Melissa Doucette
Are miyuki the same as perciosa? I seem to have trouble creating some patterns unless I use Toho, wondering if this is normal due to different seed beads are really different sizes even though they're the same size.

@@Topitoffable hi I’m sure you probably already know the answer to your question now but miyuki seed beads aren’t the same as Preciosa seed beads. All the seed beads have slight differences! The patterns u are following must be because the artist used toho but u can still do the pattern or any patterns with whatever seed beads u choose! The pattern might look a tad different or be smaller since toho beads are larger. But as I said since it’s been so long you’ve probably already figured this out! Sorry 😐 I didn’t answer u right away. I didn’t know I had a response. I have pages from magazines that describe the differences between the seed beads. If you love Preciosa seed beads there’s a book based just on using those seed beads. I can’t remember the exact name but it’s something about art created with Preciosa seed beads or something like that. If u were to search on Amazon for Preciosa seed bead books it should show up along with other types of beading books. I hope u are well and had figured out about the seed beads are on your own! Wish I had watched this before I began a very ambitious project where I used Toho beads to bezel a stone and it did not work as the bezel was too big for the stone. Miyukis are smaller and more uniform. Thanks for the video...

I know of a company that does its own indexing and labeling. Makes it harder to switch companies if you are beading large projects, and I mean large projects that are more than a necklace or bracelet. This now helps me distinguish the seed beads. With the treasures, I do not know. I try to avoid buying Toho since the vast majority of my collection is delicas.

Wonderfully informative video. I have a question, though. Do you know which brand of seed bead is the most precise in having the same size for each bead? I am wanting to make a few necklaces and bracelets that need to be made with the same size beads because of the patterns. (My eyesight is not the world's best, so, it's a bit hard for me to actually sit and pick out the seed beads that are all the same size....😉) Thank You for answering if you will. And, I appreciate your advice and instructions on this video.

As a native beader, I prefer TOHO due to their uniformity. I don't use a loom and consistency is very important, especially with peyote stitch.
We love Toho beads too and the result of stitching with Tohos is superb! Please feel free to share what you create on our Facebook group for beading and jewelry-making!
The Toho beads appear to be less consistent in size/shape than the Miyuki and Matubo beads, similiar to how Czech beads were a few decades ago. Good info, thanks.

Hello! Delica is the brand name of cylinder beads from Miyuki. Delicas are slightly smaller than the same “size” rocaille beads. Rocaille is a term used for the traditional seed bead shape. Why is the Medina Ohio store closing.There are no good bead stores in the area. Is there a chance that there will be a company store in the area. There is surely enough Bead People in the area to have a store in the area.

Hi Allie, what would you suggest I use in place of Matsuno beads if I cannot source it locally? I live in South Africa so buying from Potomac Beads (as much as I'd love to) is too expensive for me as our exchange rate is horrendous. Your advice would be appreciated. I have started making ear rings with miyuki seed beads 11/0 and would like to attach the bead work with thread guardians to the ear hooks. But I don't know what size of thread guards I would have to order online to fit with my miyuki seed beads 11/0. Further I don't know, what kind of metal would be the best and long lasting quality (besides not too expensive😊). I would like those in gold and silver colour only.
Your kind advise on what size, what sort of metall and maybe also where to order from, would be highly appreciated.

Although this isn't really important but Miyuki, since it's Japanese, is pronounced with short vowel sounds: Mee-yoo-kee but short. Not my-yoo-kee. It might confuse others who know how to pronounce it thinking that you're talking about a different brand.
Yes, her mispronouncing the name Miyuki as my-yoo-kee makes this video difficult to listen to even though it has good information otherwise.
