Lonnie, you are absolutely one of the coolest, salt of the earth kind of guys I've ever had the fortune of being able to learn from. You're aware of your environment, and you care about it. You also care about your fellow human being because you're willing to share your knowledge and teach. Thank you for all the things you share with us. Peace, and be well.
Thank you much for those kind words of encouragement.
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival hi
ATOOK!!!!
always a joy to see a new video from you Lonnie. another winner.... all the best.
Just picked some Norwegian Spruce here up in Scandinavia, it's in the kettle and the aroma is great! Can't wait to try it!
6:35 ahhhhh... The legendary inner-tube sleeved Zippo :o)
I've probably passed thousands of spruce in my young life (Exploring the Black Hills regularly), never realizing that if I just took a few minutes to gather some tips that I would be rewarded with a refreshing cup of tea upon my return to camp. And I imagine on the trail the next day that a cool sip of spruce tea would perk me right up! I'll be implementing Operation Spruce Tips as my SOP when enjoying a day in the woods (Eastern Virginia) from now on, thank ya, Lonnie. - God Speed
Thank you very much for taking the time to get back to me. Your video was very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Another informative and enjoyable video. I really like pine needle tea but have not had spruce, I'll try it soon. Thanks Lonnie.
Never tried this before. Out in the backyard picking spruce tips off of my black spruce tree. Love your videos! I am learning so much!
Warning! If you live in central europe, do not confuse spruces with the highly toxic yew tree. Could otherwise be an quite unhealthy tea.
We also have Yew trees here as well and yes you are correct.
They’re great for bows, though
Thanks Lonnie i'll give it a try next time i'm out! Only ever made tea from the Eastern Hemlock or White Pine.. Black Spruce is up next.
This is so wholesome. I immediately subscribed.
Great video Lonnie. Just arrived in Alaska a few days ago. I see those spruce trees everywhere. Drove here in our motorhome from Alabama.
Yes they are all over Alaska. Hope you enjoy your trip.
Thanks we will, currently in Fairbanks
Excellent video Lonnie! Here on Long Island, NY I'm not sure if we have black spruce but now I know how to identify it. Great camp set up, really makes me want to move to Alaska.
Lonnie is the man!
I just started watching your guys' videos and I love them! Keep it up!
Glad you are enjoying the videos. Thanks.
I was wondering about so called blue spruce. First comment I read says he really likes his blue spruce! I think I'll sample mine this spring.
Great video. Beautiful country!
Gonna make some spruce tee next time ill go bush crafting here in northern sweden!
Lonnie, thanks for video... I always learn something from you...You are a great teacher.. Bill
Another great vid Lonnie my best to you and Connie Take Care
Perfect in identifications and teaching method. Sign of a proper teacher. Still think you should carry some iron rings for your tripods rather than your strings and ropes and what have you. That sure looks tasty.
We don't have spruce in my area but we got pine. Never had spruce tea before, but I figure it's probably as good as pine needle tea.
Yes you are probably right. We do not have pine in my area.
Perfect advice never boil the neddle, just let them sit, I add chaga, and wild honey. The best healing tea on earth,
I'm from Brazil, thank you for your videos.
Congratulations on reaching 100k subs!
Thank you! Loved your video!
thanks Lonnie.
very much so enjoying these videos friend, keep it up!
Thank you Lonnie for everything that you have shared. I myself live in South Central Alaska. would like to meet you sometime to pick your brain a little. always have been interested in bushcraft, but not alot of time. God bless you. hope you enjoy your day!!
Nice use of a chimney rock at you fire pit
As always, nice to watch. Following your videos only since a few weeks but yet I can say your channel to me is one of the best here on youtube. I know many already mentioned it, but your voice is just soooo relaxing to hear its unbelievable.. :D Looking forward to your next one. I wish you two the best and hope u will have a good summer! May this post bring you a smile on your face like your videos do to me. :) Greetings and a heartful "Vergelt`s Gott" from southern bavaria, Germany.
My face is smiling indeed. :o) Greetings from Alaska
Hello i would just like to thank you for such and awesome video I will show this too my scouts troop so that in the harsh cold nights they have something nice to warm them.
Sincerely Federico
I love spruce tea
hi Lonnie good video thanks bud
Another great video!! Just great to be in Alaska! I see why you live here ! I don't care for Anchorage area. Now I'm in Talkeetna and like it here also. Keep up the great videos!
Yes I agree about Anchorage. Talkeetna is certainly a better location to experience "Alaska". I have at least one other viewer from the Talkeetna area. "Deepwood Handcraft" and "Deepwood Leather". If you appreciate quality handcrafted leather products, he is definitely talented in those skills. He lives near Talkeetna.
I've never had the tea but as a kid I would eat the new tips every time I was outside playing. Living in Texas now I don't get that treat.
Very interesting, thank you
Thank you, that looks good. Gonna try it.
Thank you for this video
love your videos thank you
Great vid thanks for sharing your knowledge
Salut et un gros merci
very good and informative video my friend, thank you very much for making it

Excellent. Thank you for showing how to tell the difference between the black and white spruce. I am going to try making some tea. What about blue spruce?
I have heard that Blue spruce is good but I do not have personal experience with that variety.
Hi Lonnie, have heard many times that Blue Spruce was created by "by gone days" farmers who placed their rusting farm equipment under spruce trees. Apparently the iron from the rusting process made the spruce trees blue, but this may be lore, I don't know. If anyone has more on that it would be good to hear. Cheers!
My parents had two blue spruce in their back yard. They did have a blueish ting to them. Not sure about the whole "rusty" thing. Lore.
Checked it out online and found that iron content in soil is what makes spruce blue.
so now our large bucket of rusty nails has turned useful and will be going on a spruce tree to check that info out. ATB
Very interesting indeed. Thank you.
Great tree I'd tips for spruce.
Thank you for this!!
Love it!
Between 0.35-0.50 there are fast flying orbs in the sky at the right of the spruce tree. I wonder what they are?
I hope I can live like this eventually lol.
As a tea for a flavored drink spruce needle tea is great ! However boiling the needles does infact lower not only the flavor But it destroys the content of vitamin C The same effect happens with Orange juice when the by law must make it " pasteurized " And add in Flavor and vitamins
My people (Cree) And the Metis would in the best way i remember was to mush the needles Not crush Or bash This mixed with sumac And birch water was your kick of vitamins in the spring And yes They did hot tea too There is even a thing about Spruce beer?
loved this!
I've always heard of pine/spruce needle tea but I'm not sure what species the pines here in Eastern Ohio are and if they are good candidates for tea.. guess I'll need to do a little research. Looks like something I'd enjoy
All pines and spruce are good for tea as far as edibility. Some will taste and/or smell better than others though
Are you able to store the green spruce tips from spring and use them throughout the year?
I personally do not do so since if I want spruce tea, I just go over to a handy nearby spruce and get some fresh like I did once about two and a half weeks ago when I felt a little "tickle" in the throat like perhaps the beginning of a bug. I have never dried spruce needles and used them later so I do not know how well that would work. I'm guessing it would be fine except perhaps that wonderful sprucy aroma may not be as strong. I say that because I do not believe that evergreen wreaths made each winter for sale during the Christmas season keep their aroma over time
Hi. I really love your videos. Have been almost trhough all of them lately.
Do you now what virtues this tea ( except the flawor of course ) is know for?
Thanks a lot.
Sincerly form Switzerland.
It is very high in vitamin C and is used traditionally here in the North country to help fight colds and flu. I was recently camping and did not have my normal herbal cold fighting arsenal with me. I started coming down with a cold as evidenced by running sinuses that would not dry up. I stopped and thought of what might be locally available that might help. It was then that I thought of the spruce tip tea. I made some up and had a cup that afternoon and another fresh made cup the next morning. The cold never developed and the sinuses dried up.
Thanks for your reply. Very informative. I will seek out what is available in switzerland as we have a lot of trees.
Very much appreciated.
Could you dry the tips over time and then use them at a later date?
Yes I believe that that should work well. Since the trees are evergreens I have never dried the needles for tea. They are always conveniently nearby for me. They may be frozen on the tree during the winter but they are still very much useable.
Does the Alberta Spruce give the lovely edible tips?
I am not familiar with the Alberta variety since of course it does not grow here but if it is a true spruce it should be fine to use for this. However different varieties of spruce will have different aroma and taste.
Can all types of spruce tips be used including blue spruce?
Yes all true spruces can be used though there will be different subtleties between the differing types in taste and smell.
It seemed like the White Spruce needles didn't grow all the way around the branch and the Black Spruce needles do - kinda like the WS needles left a barren stripe while the BS needles don't. Is this true for all or just happens to be this instance/example?
White spruce typically has a "part" under the branch just like hair on a person's head.
Yes, ty
Great video! I was wondering if all spruce is safe to use this way? I'm down south in Georgia, hello by the way, and we have some ever greens (blue spruce?) that was planted and is doing well. Would this be ok for this process? Other than that we have yellow and white pine. The white pine needles are great for tea but I've always wondered if the yellow would be? Do you know or have any thoughts on this? I ask because where I'm at the yellow far out number the white. I have heard mixed do's and don'ts on the yellow pine but no definite answer on whether it's safe or not? Thanks so much.
Yes all spruce are fine to use this same way. According to Green Deane on eat the weeds dot com all true pines are fine for use as a tea. We do not have any pine varieties here in South Central Alaska so I am personally not familiar with their uses.
You didn't mention anything about blue spruce. I haven't had the pleasure of tasting black spruce yet but the blue spruce I have in my backyard makes a great tea! Is blue spruce known as a good tea maker?
Sorry but I am only familiar with the trees that I have tried. I have tried Sitka spruce, White spruce, and Black spruce. Those are all good but I prefer the white spruce less than the other two. We do not have Blue spruce in Alaska so it is a tree that I am not familiar with. *BUT* if you enjoy the tea then it is a good tea tree since taste is subjective and one mans favorite can be another mans most abhorred taste.
Hey Loni, does the spruce contain as much of the Qutcatin, as the white pine needle, that people are using as anti viral tea?
I understand that the helpful components found in pines are also found in the spruce as well. But as far as the amount of useful components of the spruce vs the pine, I am not aware of the amounts. I was told by a viewer of my videos through a private message that he had been giving "bug" patients spruce tea and they told him that it was very helpful. I used it when I recently had the "bug" and also believe that it helped though I did not use it as much as I should have.
@@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival thank you my brother, its funny i did find a white pine all healthy and bushy, and ironic just having a cup of my Suramin Pine Tea as you replied today, pers i dont believe in coincidence, I belive in and I praise God, he defends us and works in oh so mysterious ways, in fact Im making a tinture tnrw, will add white pine, chaga, 5 sigma muahroom blend, dry elderberry, old mans beard (Eucinea), blue spruce, licorise root, dry ginger root, will soak in moonshine for 6 weeks, then do a 50% water extract of same herbs at end 3 hr 190 F , then blend the 2 portions of alcahol and distilled water , add some local wild honey, this should be a real flu butt kicker for the winter ,, i been using same tinture serveral years , but less the pine, spruce needles , im 63, havent had a flu since I was 8, no cold or sniffles in 15 years, off all meds, the God Lord and forest tincture protects and serves my bodies needs very well, praise him, and again Thank you for reaching out to a loyal subscriber, Blessings 🙏👍
Can these needles be dried and used later?
Yes.
If the early miners would have only know about this, could have prevented a lot of scurvy. loads of vitamin C in that tea.
I agree. Like I told several other commenters above, I started coming down with a cold while out camping a few days ago and I did not have my normal natural anti cold arsenal with me like my chaga dual extract and colloidal silver. After thinking about what was local and could be useful for fighting colds, I thought of spruce tip tea. I made up a fresh cup that afternoon and another fresh cup the next morning and all symptoms of a cold onset were gone and did not return. I made the tea just like I demo-ed here in this video. Besides being great medicinally, it is just plain great to drink taste wise as well. That is more than can be said about a lot of medicines prepared by man lol
Are blue spruce toxic ?
All true spruce are fine as far as I know. Please do your own research however.
is there any poisonous spruce tip spruces
No there are no poisonous spruce
Another great video Lonnie. Are you on Instagram ? I'm not much of a fan of Facebook , but I may activate my old account soon.
No I am not on Instagram. I should be but just haven't got around to trying to figure it all out. I don't even know what instagram is exactly. I do know that instagram is recommended to help grow a youtube channel so I guess I need to figure it out sometime and give it a go.

You got it buddy , I personally would love to see you and your UA-cam channel over on Instagram. You were the first bushcraft channel I joined.
lol wet dog smell but thanks I'm gonna try this
White spruce needles smell like cat piss. Best way to identify it.
great info and video delicious looking tea ........
ps...look out for Bigfoot lol oh lordy lol.........
I love spruce tip tea, and I also make healing cream with it.
I have a beautiful blue spruce in my backyard and the new buds are ready for picking. I made myself a blue spruce bud tea this afternoon, and I would say it has a nice soft citrus taste. Looking to freeze some for winter months.
Nice Silky you got there :)Yes Spruce the is certainly good. In spring i sometimes just eat the green new buds raw. Taste good too. I think i will try this method.
I just got that silky recently and am very happy with it.
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival do you think white fur is good?
I have no idea about Fir trees because we do not have them in South Central Alaska. A search on the web will hopefully fill you in on that. Check out the link below for some info. Do a search for "White Fir".
pfaf.org/user/plantsearch.aspx
great explaination of the 2. i can never really tell the difference so this has helped.
thanks for the video!!
I learned more in this 10 minutes about spruce tea than ever before thank you
We have a white spruce practically in our garden. I use that because it's convenient. It makes nice tea 😁
Mmmm... so nice and relaxing to have that spruce tea! Thanks! White spruce gets its nicknames -- cat spruce and skunk spruce -- honestly. Now we can add 'wet dog spruce'. ; ) Last night I used my spruce tree balsamic vinegar to grill some fresh picked apricots and summer pears. Delicious! Every kind of spruce tastes a little different. I really like the Colorado Blue Spruce, but it's prickly! Nice job with the identification tips, too!
Balsamic vinegar grilled fresh apricots & pears. Wow wow wow. That sounds like it would taste really good.
***** The spruce tips make it taste great! I use it for grilling apples in the fall, too. I'm looking forward to some spruce tea! : )
Nice video and nice drink! All the best my friend.
You seem like a very down to earth kinda guy. I really enjoyed watching your videos very informative and interesting. I loved your dandelion tea video. I just wish that you would include some of the health benefits of drinking theses teas. You do an awesome with the camera work and editing! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the info Lonnie. Here in Georgia, we only have the white spruce and not many of those. We do have white pine and it makes a good tea. Keep up the good work Sir!
New subscriber. Watched a few of your videos through suggested videos and I am hooked. I’ve had white pine tea, but not spruce...yet. Have you ever heated the tips with the water? White pine, it gives more of a roasted flavor and you still get the goodness from the pine since the boiling point of the oils is significantly higher than water.
Thanks for subbing and welcome to the channel and it gives a stronger flavor but I am concerned that more of the medicinal benefits are lost when doing that so usually keep the cooking to a minimum after the needles are placed in the hot water.
Yes I have boiled the needles with the water.
We call white spruce 'engelmann spruce' in British Columbia in case anyone from the area was wondering, still my favourite channel Lonnie and Connie!
Great video , thank you. Enjoy the videos where you identify the various plants and trees.
QQQ question, What spruce tree can smell different to others as it can identify as cat urine sink stronger than ever! Thanks for your channel 👍enjoy the young tender shouts of Black Spruce trees in Springtime. May June are citrus fresh tasting. Watching from Canada 🇨🇦 habeas see Yah
Our White spruce sometimes has an unpleasant aroma but the tea is still usually pretty good though not as good as the black spruce which has the clean aroma.
Wonderful tea! I love it with sourclover or heather, very very nutritios.
Thank you for these videos. I just moved to south central Alaska! Your videos are both entertaining and informative. I'm definitely a long term subscriber.
Thank you for subscribing. Welcome and glad to have you. South Central Alaska is also my home as well.
It's definitely beautiful country.
souther tier new YUCK state , white pine and red pine about our most common . red weak , white varies , but as you say , get a good tree and it is good . we''re going thru transition past few years , but hope SUMAC heads are young again to enjoie sumac lemonade or tea . God's world has great stuff duznt it ??
Yes God has blessed us with most everything we need in the wild kingdom. We just need to learn how to use it.
Hey Lonnie! Love the smooth multiple camera views! That made it even more enjoyable to watch, and gave it a more professional look too! Keep up your great work
I have what appear to be white spruce in my yard and, after seeing another video about making tea from various evergreens (from The Outsider), I decided to give it a go with those today. I like it! I really like the flavor of it for some reason. It's cool that I have that little treasure right in my yard and plan to make regular use of it over the winter. I also have some white birch trees nearby, so I'm thinking of trying birch bark tea as well.
I've watched four of your videos tonight and it is hitting on all cylinders. Been into the tree ID here lately and your tips on the spruce tree was awesome. We don't have alot of those here but still like the way you identified those trees.
I could smell the tea through my device ☺ 👍👍👍
Makes me want to move my family to the bush! That was super satisfying to watch.
Ssssniff.... mmm...Smelled somthin good, had to come and see :) Looks great yumm!
Lonnie...how is tye "Blue Spruce tree for tea?
We do not have blue spruce locally so I do not personally know. If you were to crush some needles in your fingers and smell them, that will give you an idea on what it may taste like as a tea.
Enjoyed the video. Very good description and valuable information. Not really sure about the black spruce population in california but if they here I am giving this a try for sure. Keep the vids coming.
HAHAHA Alaska's green tea ,love your videos just ............sub
My favourite UA-cam channel by a mile. Thank you for all the lessons. You have helped me through what has been a difficult time in my life. I cant express my gratitude enough other than to say thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
Lonnie , you sure made that tea refreshing , so I can tell you what the next time out I will be making a batch of that tea. Keep the wild eatables coming cause you got to like going out in the bush for a couple days and making a fresh salad. ummmm good. Don
Hello Lonnie, I am a Florida native and I am so glad you taught us how to make spruce tip tea. I will have to see what type of spruce will grow in Florida and plant some I would love to try the spruce tip tea.
Thumbs up.
ENJOY....THE SIMPLE LIFE
Lonnie, you make saturdays and Sundays really enjoyable. My wife and I are dying to go to Alaska and apply everything we learned with you along this last 2 months. Thank you
