UFC 284: Makhachev vs. Volkanovski is an upcoming mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that will take place on February 12, 2023, at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
A UFC Lightweight Championship bout between current champion Islam Makhachev and current UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski is expected to headline the event. This will be the eighth time in UFC history that champions in different divisions will fight for the same title, following UFC 94, UFC 205, UFC 226, UFC 232, UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs. Dillashaw, UFC 259, and UFC 277.

Islam Makhachev:
Islam Ramazanovich Makhachev (Russian: Исла́м Рамаза́нович Маха́чев; born 27 October 1991) is a Russian professional mixed martial artist and former Sambo competitor. He currently competes in the Lightweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is the current UFC Lightweight Champion. A professional competitor since 2010, Makhachev was the combat sambo world champion at 74 kilograms in 2016. As of November 14, 2022, he is #2 in the UFC men's pound-for-pound rankings.
Makhachev faced Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 280 on October 22, 2022. [ Makhachev won the bout and the title in the second round via arm-triangle choke after knocking down Oliveira with a punch. With this win, he received the Performance of the Night bonus.
In November 2022, Makhachev was awarded Order "For Merit to the Republic of Dagestan" for his achievement in martial arts.
Makhachev is scheduled to make his first title defense against current UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski on February 12, 2023 at UFC 284.

The trilogy bout against Holloway was rescheduled at UFC 276 on 2 July 2022. Volkanovski won the bout via unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the fight 50-45. This win earned him the Crypto.com Fan Bonus of the Night second place award which paid in bitcoin of US$20,000. Alex's grappling is amateurish against Islam. And here is the issue, cause Alex's style is completely open to clinch, you can't be open to clinch against Islam's style and this isn't something that can be corrected in few weeks. Should be an easy one for Islam. But we never know, if Alex manage to slip a right and get the KO........but I don't think the chance to catch a guy with such a level like Islam is high. I bet Islam wins by mauling round 2, similar as against Charles but could even be quicker cause at least Charles kind of keep his center line well protected. But one thing can be sure, will be great fight cause we gonna see another fighter with two belts and whoever it is, this is damn cool.
islam's fights are all insane to be honest; Charles 11 fight win streak vs Islam's 10 fight winstreak and now THIS. I want fight to be more of a 3 4 rounds at least to see the full game of islam. We haven't really seen anyone testing the limits of islam game. Arman came close to testing but islam still won very comfortably.
I did think Volk has balls of steel….but really He has nothing to loose (P4P? Means nothing) but Alex can possibly gain a new belt and legendary status….Islam has his new belt to loose against an opponent he sees as small and weak…this should be a great fight… I’m on Alex’s corner but definitely understand the risk and danger of Islam…I’m going 55% Alex (based on speed, experience in the 5 round championship game, + cardio and death or glory attitude ) …45% Islam (his Dagestan super submission game S tier dangerous , but Islam is untested against a speedy, tactical, shorter- but longer reached opponent- )

people think that this is the easiest fight for Islam, this is the hardest fight he will ever have, technique is important, but the blood in you, DNA, Volk and Islam have the same blood, it will be hot
I think his toughest fight will be against beneil dariush. Dariush is an absolute stud and he is missionary who fights for some higher purpose.
I think Volk has a better chance than a lot of people are giving him. Volk is way faster, he has good distance management, he's strong as hell, and has great cardio, also his years as a rugby player would translate to resisting grappling a lot better than other sports. He does have to perform near perfectly to pull it off, but that's how he prepares. I think Makhechev isn't going to be able to get him out of there and by round 3 Volk will pull ahead, as Makhachevs cardio is a little suspect if he can't grapple the whole match. I personally don't think Makhechev is on the same level as Khabib.
Two things for sure, 1 Islam is an elite grappler 2 getting locked with an elite grappler most of the time won’t end well for the other fighter specifically if he has a mediocre and weak ground game. Faster, distance management, strong blah blah blah, these are all nice and fancy words, until you get locked with a bear and start wrestling you.
@@gromenteal2133 I agree, but here is one caveat, and that is that MMA is not a pure skill competition like chess or golf. It relies on physical attributes, and being able to play around those attributes, that's why someone like Ngannou is able to out wrestle a superior grappler like Stipe, who wrestled since he was a kid, and was a NCAA D1 wrestler.
That being said your assessment very well could be accurate, but Makhechev has had trouble get some of his opponents to the ground. I think Volk is likely going to be one of those opponents given that he wrestled since he was 6 and won 2 national championships for AUS.
I believe he'll be skilled and strong enough to put Makhechev in uncomfortable situation, and If he's able to keep the fight standing he should be able to out point Makhechev, because honestly his stand up has a lot of holes, most of those are covered by his awesome grappling but they are definitely there.
Islam can clear out the 170 as well.. Imagine a Islam vs Khamzat for the 170 title.. Yikes.

Volks defence is great, He hits harder then the punch that dropped and finished Makhachev but I'll say it was an awesome counter punch that caused Makhachev his only loss however Volk is quick to and will land harder counter punches then the one that dropped Makhachev.
How strong is Makhachevs chin? It has a question mark on it for me.
