    Rhett... trust me on this... start practicing your singing privately every chance you get... in the shower, singing along with the radio, in-a-low-voice along with your band, sing along with your guitar (like George Benson), etc... every single chance you get. Then learn and practice doing harmonies. - I was always just-the-guitar-player too and thought I couldn't sing. I also played pretty complicated guitar work, and thought it wasn't possible to play that and sing simultaneously... Then after doing all the above recommendations and getting my pitch nailed I realized I actually had a great voice (I bet you do too) and it turned out singing and playing at the same time wasn't hard at all. - Rhett, if you sang well, along with your already great guitar playing, you'd be unstoppable. -- Great look, great guitar playing, and great singing... talk about a triple threat! - Just sayin' bro... I think you're more than a sideman.

    I love this channel and Rhett but gotta give a thumbs down here. It’s a 14 min video, and the actual content is from 8:30- 10:30. And that content is not insightful. How does he get paid? He gets paid a guaranteed rate every show. Some tours provide a per diem for food. Some folks save their per diem as much as possible, eating cheaply, to save up for gear. That’s it. That’s all the content in this 14 min video. No mention of, say, saving receipts so you can write that food or gear off on your taxes. Some good shots of their tour but look elsewhere for the finances of touring.

    Well first the band goes from vans to buses then separate bus for the band and gang. If the name gets a hit or two then the name gets their own bus. Then after no hits for a while then its back to everyone on the bus and you hit the fair circuit. County hit isn't like a mainstream hit money wise. That is why tour buses are leased because when the money runs out it's back to the van.

    Like he mentioned, I’ve seen some openers for bigger bands or early day festival gigs, that I go for the headliner. Then if I see a band I really liked open or on one of those early festival slots, I’ll possibly buy a ticket for a theater smaller gig when they roll back in town the following year. A lot of younger bands don’t understand...but unless you are a cover artist or wedding band, you gotta hit the road. However I do feel bad for bands that do house shows at art gigs and cone out negative majority of the time. But I guess if you do it long enough you’ll grow a small crowd and break even.

It takes dedication, study, and persistence and then you still have to struggle and learn to navigate the business structure of the entertainment industry and it's Managers, Legal representation, Companies, Non profits, Record Labels, Investors, Sponsors ..etc Most gigs don't offer 401K plans for support staff and musicians. Damn, you guys sound great! I’m loving the songs I’m hearing. I also liked the glance at the nonexistent watch on your wrist in this video. Good work you’re doing on your channel. I’m binging all your stuff now.

      I do the same thing. Playing with the worship team, and occasionally doing a solo. Otherwise, I'll be playing for large venues with the local Mission on holidays. Churches and the Missions are not paid gigs. I do them because I love playing and really enjoy playing for God and the people. Finally I also enjoy playing at Senior centers, coffee shops, rest homes.etc. Most of this last group I play for will be paid venues on a case by case basis.

      Music sales is non-existent now (except for commercials or soundtracks). You have to tour to make any significant money.

    • @laytonrichards2188
      @laytonrichards2188 4 роки тому

      That's not true. Especially with the rise in sales of vinyl records because of all the hipsters.

    • @frankgreco
      @frankgreco 4 роки тому +2

      @@laytonrichards2188 Vinyl sales are clearly up, but they constitute a meager part of an already meager income potential for musicians. I can't find the data, but I would guess vinyl sales for a musician to be no more than 5% of your total income. Possibly just a little higher than selling merch, which is only about 2% of your income. In today's environment, only a tiny slice of musicians (or music entertainers... if you know what I mean) get the big money. Everyone else struggles.

    I love music, and playing guitar is incredibly enjoying and rewarding to me. I see some commenters here remarking about this video portraying a life they wish they could leave. Not so for me. All that traveling and being on the road so much would wear me out quickly. I like occasional travel, but a touring musician's life would drag me down. Which only makes me more grateful that there are folks like Rhett who (1) are incredibly talented, and (2) enjoy this lifestyle. Pretty much every time I go to hear a live show (which is often!), I think to myself: I'm so glad there are people that enjoy (or at least can endure) the musician's lifestyle. Because what y'all do brings me a *lot* of joy! Thanks for the glimpse in your world (and great video and editing work, BTW). -Tom

    Rhett your tone is f****** amazing. I am not much for country music. I have played and recorded with country bands but I would jump at the chance to play bass with yall just because of your drummer. He has got a great groove!!!!!! Plus you guys do AB Whipping Post that is super cool. Love the channel Brother...........You keep it REAL

    Your tone with the Helix is so good! I've been doing the hired gun thing with a band similar to what you're doing with Noah. And you are 100% right, those 15 minutes alone are something that can keep your sanity on the road. Thanks for your videos, Rhett!

    Nice video! You made me realize that you have to pack all your instruments & take with you (I know dumb comment). You show how much work it is to drive & haul. Having known a professional musician, I know how hard a life that is. Then I watch you & thank you for showing all the details, pay, travel, comrades & friends on the road. Then towards the end...Woo hoo...Whipping Post! Nice band
