the hard part is rationing out the elbow of stank stashed under the spare wheel in the van when you're on the road. you don't want it running out half way through the tour. not the kind of thing you can just put in the rider.
Man I really loved this video. So transparent and refreshing to see how reflective you are. Very inspirational. And great playing too. Keep these coming please, if able. I think you might have more fans than you realize.
There are plenty of good guitar related channels, but what I do really like about yours, Rhett, is not only the really high quality content, but even more importantly the fact that you clearly are a genuinely nice person. If I decide to spend some time watching stuff on YT, that time is going to be dedicated to people I'd happily have a beer with, and you are definitely in that group!
Wow, hearing you perform "Whipping Post" I just realized how much rhythmic conversation is really happening between the Allman's two drummers when they play it.
I love this channel and Rhett but gotta give a thumbs down here. It’s a 14 min video, and the actual content is from 8:30- 10:30. And that content is not insightful. How does he get paid? He gets paid a guaranteed rate every show. Some tours provide a per diem for food. Some folks save their per diem as much as possible, eating cheaply, to save up for gear. That’s it. That’s all the content in this 14 min video. No mention of, say, saving receipts so you can write that food or gear off on your taxes. Some good shots of their tour but look elsewhere for the finances of touring.
I totally agree with taking a few minutes before a show, just to be by myself in a quiet space, just to center myself. Great series, Rhett! I enjoy all your videos. You always have great tones and guitar parts!
Hey Rhett! After watching this video there's no way I could move on to another without mentioning how completely blown away I am by the SOLID musicianship and killer songwriting on display here! I am so glad you started doing this series of videos. I didn't realize how well you played before and I also find them very positive. Both of which are cool.

Finding your channel has really inspired me to start making music more with my buddies and push to find my own path in a music career, there’s no plan b.
This started as a perfect found footage ghost movie, including staying in the haunted hotel room. From that point, weird things could've started happening while on tour. Backstage mishaps and stuff like that. It could seriously be a movie. I would watch it.
Well first the band goes from vans to buses then separate bus for the band and gang. If the name gets a hit or two then the name gets their own bus. Then after no hits for a while then its back to everyone on the bus and you hit the fair circuit. County hit isn't like a mainstream hit money wise. That is why tour buses are leased because when the money runs out it's back to the van.
Matt Robin Do you think that’s because the commercial channels cycling through new music so quickly doesn’t have a chance to become a classic. Or because the songs are sort of forgettable. This same argument can be made against hip hop. Those two genres have the shortest shelf life.
You provide so much helpful information here, and it is really interesting. I liked your comments on the time you carve out to "center yourself" before performing, and to take a little alone time during touring a tour like this. You are inspiring.
How do you collect in the event you don’t get paid? Who do you name as a defendant? Do you make quarterly tax payments? Health insurance? Retirement? Gross receipts? What is deductible? Know a musician who’s been audited? Who decides how much you get paid? Is that a source of friction? How do you get a raise? How do you qualify for credit when you’re showing little or no income?
I've stopped at that rest stop on I-81 in Virginia lots of times on my musical travels. Beautiful countryside there. And yes, a mid-March snow in PA is common. Best wishes on your tour.
Hey Rhett great video, this channel is top notch. I respect all you have shared about real musician's life. Cool sounds out of the Helix, no patch cord nightmares on tour
Hey Rhett I've been watching numerous videos and this one is in my hometown and now it's definitely made up my mind to find my first guitar! I love the videos and the information you put in them. Wish me luck 🤘🏻
Like he mentioned, I’ve seen some openers for bigger bands or early day festival gigs, that I go for the headliner. Then if I see a band I really liked open or on one of those early festival slots, I’ll possibly buy a ticket for a theater smaller gig when they roll back in town the following year. A lot of younger bands don’t understand...but unless you are a cover artist or wedding band, you gotta hit the road. However I do feel bad for bands that do house shows at art gigs and cone out negative majority of the time. But I guess if you do it long enough you’ll grow a small crowd and break even.
I've recently started following your channel. I gotta' say, from the sound and your style, to the professionalism and attitude - you're the kind of artist I always wanted to be. Makes me wish I had pursued playing professionally harder.
I love these vlogs. I cannot get enough of them. I am a gigging musician based out of Maryland. I also own a Helix, but I never played it live. It's an amazing tool, but my danm feet are just to big and clumsy for working it in a live situation, I need a board with more space between the buttons, but if I had to for quick setup, I'd prob have to limit my pedal switching. Another awesome video.
This is cool Rhett.. It sort of dispels the myth that professional musicians just "fall" into a career because they are "blessed" with magical talent.. It takes dedication, study, and persistence and then you still have to struggle and learn to navigate the business structure of the entertainment industry and it's Managers, Legal representation, Companies, Non profits, Record Labels, Investors, Sponsors ..etc Most gigs don't offer 401K plans for support staff and musicians. (Per-Diem is a wonderful thing!) Thanks for your posts and efforts man!! Wishing you all the best and great success! :)

Churches and the Missions are not paid gigs. I do them because I love playing and really enjoy playing for God and the people. Finally I also enjoy playing at Senior centers, coffee shops, rest homes.etc. Most of this last group I play for will be paid venues on a case by case basis.

I have no idea who you are... but as I hope to be a working musician I found this to be one of the most informative videos ever. And yes, I subscribed! Time to binge watch your vids for the rest of the night.
I love music, and playing guitar is incredibly enjoying and rewarding to me. I see some commenters here remarking about this video portraying a life they wish they could leave. Not so for me. All that traveling and being on the road so much would wear me out quickly. I like occasional travel, but a touring musician's life would drag me down. Which only makes me more grateful that there are folks like Rhett who (1) are incredibly talented, and (2) enjoy this lifestyle. Pretty much every time I go to hear a live show (which is often!), I think to myself: I'm so glad there are people that enjoy (or at least can endure) the musician's lifestyle. Because what y'all do brings me a *lot* of joy! Thanks for the glimpse in your world (and great video and editing work, BTW). -Tom
Rhett your tone is f****** amazing. I am not much for country music. I have played and recorded with country bands but I would jump at the chance to play bass with yall just because of your drummer. He has got a great groove!!!!!! Plus you guys do AB Whipping Post that is super cool. Love the channel Brother...........You keep it REAL
Your tone with the Helix is so good! I've been doing the hired gun thing with a band similar to what you're doing with Noah. And you are 100% right, those 15 minutes alone are something that can keep your sanity on the road. Thanks for your videos, Rhett!
Nice video! You made me realize that you have to pack all your instruments & take with you (I know dumb comment). You show how much work it is to drive & haul. Having known a professional musician, I know how hard a life that is. Then I watch you & thank you for showing all the details, pay, travel, comrades & friends on the road. Then towards the end...Woo hoo...Whipping Post! Nice band
Great video! Kudos to all you do! Just started watching your videos. I was looking at the Strymon Big Sky video you did and just started watching your other videos. Well done!
Rhett i dont think u need exposure via someone else or their band. Not at this point. You are a phenomenal player. If i seen your name on a local marquee, id be dropping some cash and walking my happy ass inside. Rock on my friend.
I see that you guys crossed the New River Gorge Bridge. I bet that was on the way up to Morgantown WV. I live in Beckley and grew up in Ansted on the edge of the New River Gorge. There isn’t much going on around here but I never take the view from that bridge for granted.

Rhett, I've listened to the helix a lot and I think it usually sounds great. But you are the only one I've heard make it really sound "real". Dig it man.
Dude you guys kill "Whipping Post" ! Great job.
I was suprised by your filmmaking in this video, really smooth transitions! Well done!
Staring though that windshield is a lonely beautiful life! Play on brother, the world needs to hear it!
Man you are awesome. Very informative. Thanks for doing what you do in the name of music!! God bless
I have no idea who you are... but as I hope to be a working musician I found this to be one of the most informative videos ever. And yes, I subscribed! Time to binge watch your vids for the rest of the night.
What a great video showing the *real* work involved in being a musician. Great job! You and the band sound great btw 🎸🤓
I love what you do (as seen in these vids) and how you think about it. THANK you for sharing this adventure with us.
Love the channel Brother...........You keep it REAL
you sound so great with the lapsteel slide, awesome channel also
Your tone with the Helix is so good! I've been doing the hired gun thing with a band similar to what you're doing with Noah. And you are 100% right, those 15 minutes alone are something that can keep your sanity on the road. Thanks for your videos, Rhett!
bro, I really enjoy your channel, makes me wanna keep going and playing! you got a great tone btw! hugs!
Sounding great Rhett- love the Noah Gutherie band. Thanks for the look
Great guitar tones and songs. Really like the vocals and guitars. Tasty stuff.
I played at that theater in Greensburg PA before. Beautiful place to gig
Thanks for the shots of Morgantown! Went to music school there in the 80s!
Thanks for talking about this. No one ever does which makes it kind of difficult to figure out.
I see that you guys crossed the New River Gorge Bridge. I bet that was on the way up to Morgantown WV.
I live in Beckley and grew up in Ansted on the edge of the New River Gorge. There isn’t much going on around here but I never take the view from that bridge for granted.
I’ve played in Morgantown before @ Schmitt’s Saloon for Mountainfest Motorcycle Rally. Owen set us up in a hotel for a few days since we were coming down from Philly. Super cool place!
I really enjoy your videos, your insight, and your chill vibe. Your playing is outstanding.
Lol yes it’s snows in March in pa haha it sucks... used to love the snow now in my older age I just let my son love it enough for both of us haha you guys are rocking out man... that helix is awesome...
Respect for givin' us a sneak peak on the daily life of a bona-fide professional musician! Keep on livin' the dream for me and everyone of us... even though it requires a sacrifice and barrelling thru the grind. At least you got the chance to express yourself... 😏😑
