    After reading all the comments and just tackling this about an hour ago, the only other thing I'd recommend is putting it in gear before dripping the lower unit. That way when you go to reinstall the lower unit you can rotate the prop the if the main shaft keyways aren't lined up. And you won't know they aren't lined up until you have everything else lined up and ready but it won't fully seat. Now that I know this, this job would take me 45 minutes on a bad day. But great video and without it I probably wouldn't have even attempted it!

    Good job on this. Thank you. Just a tip for you though... If that lower unit got hot enough to melt the water pump housing you should have changed the gear oil and checked the seals for the gearbox. The oil is probably cooked and I would be very surprised if the seals are still good. Yes, that's a complete teardown of the lower unit but it probably needed to be done. But, otherwise a great video.

      Agreed, I would have done the Lower Base with the oil seals for sure and of course change the gear box lube. (Optis alway use High Proformance 90)

    Quick question - The sound the started made on the first attempt to start when it kicked out, do you know what the cause of this is? I'm struggling a lot with my starter when the engine is hot. It keeps making that noise and the starter doesn't kick in. Is there something you know about I can look at?

    Great video. You gave me the courage to give this a try. I do have a couple of questions. I can't get the lower unit back in. I've got things lined up and it's about 1/4" away. I think it might be related to the shift rod. I had it in reverse but now think the motor might be in neutral. Is it ok to shift back to neutral? Or better to change it manually on the lower unit to reverse (not sure how)?Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to hurt anything or cause any damage. Thanks again for posting this video!

    • @GTsPerformance
      @GTsPerformance  4 роки тому

      We usually put the gear in neutral, that way the shift rod can be moved into place by moving it with your fingers. When it is in gear (forward or reverse), the shift rod is in a fixed position. Sometimes it isn't perfectly aligned and won't let you sit the lower unit fully shut.
      Also, check if the pipe that connects to the impeller housing is in correctly. That may also cause it not to go in.

    • @CJ-xo5uj

    Great video do you have a add oil? I have a115 mercy blue is it the same process?

    • @GTsPerformance
      @GTsPerformance  6 років тому

      The steps are the same, and these dont spill the oil when you remove the lower unit, but if you want to replace the oil while you're at it.. it takes about a quart of 80-90 gear lube.
      For that, just remove top bolt and the lower bolt to drain (they're both on the lower unit), then you'll need a pump for the quart of gear oil.. connect the pump on where the bottom bolt goes and fill till it starts coming out the top. Once full, put the top bolt on first, then disconnect the pump and quickly put the bottom bolt on. And done! 🙂👍
      Hope this helped, and good luck!

    can you just replace the impeller or do you have to replace housing ect. and is there only one way the impeller can go on or dosent it matter which way i put it on and do you turn shaft clockwise to slide housing over impeller

    • @GTsPerformance
      @GTsPerformance  4 роки тому

      The housing is only if it's damaged.. otherwise, there's no need to replace. The impeller goes in smooth if you turn the shaft clockwise while pushing down on the housing cover. Either direction you install it, it'll align itself once you give it its first crank.
      We use a bit of white lithium grease/ petroleum grease to slide it in and for the first start, but you could just use soap

    What is about the shifting rod alignement?

    • @GTsPerformance
      @GTsPerformance  6 років тому

      When you remove the lower unit, the rod for the gear automatically moves to forward, so some people put the gear in forward when removing the lower unit, and when it comes time to install, you don't have to move anything.. just install. (In theory)
      But, sometimes the rod for the gear doesn't always fall straight into place. So this is just by personal preference, I like to leave it on neutral so if it doesn't align I'll just align it by hand (on the lower unit)when I'm putting it back together. Saves time avoiding walking back and forth moving the gear handle till its perfectly aligned.

    • @GTsPerformance
      @GTsPerformance  6 років тому

      You know what, when you said shift rod alignment I was thinking about the onboard.. till I noticed the video.
      Actually, this one is a lot easier. You see the shaft at 6:40 (just right of the speedometer hose) When you're installing the lower unit, all you have to do is help align it with some needle nose pliers.
      Just like the tube on the impeller housing that goes to the top of the engine, same thing. If it doesn't sit all the way in, there will be about a 1/2" gap and won't close

    • @johnfitzgerald5655
      @johnfitzgerald5655 3 роки тому

      @@GTsPerformance one thing that a lot of these impeller replacement videos do not emphasize enough is the seal in the top of the impeller housing below the guide tube. I bought a rebuild kit and it came with zero instructions and did not realize the importance of this seal below the guide tube. Put the lower end back on and no water the tattle tale.....yeah likely because that seal for tube was still in the box... live and learn. thanks for the video.

    totally wrong video ! it melted because it ran with no water ! You should have replaced the lower housing and seals ! You pre lubricate with soap and water NOT grease ! Learn how to do it correctly before posting a video .

      @Old4u2nv 6 років тому

      GT's Performance its a 150 mariner magnum

    • @GTsPerformance
      @GTsPerformance  6 років тому +1

      +BR Fleenor you didn't do anything wrong! This is absolutely normal to see water coming from the sides or exhaust. As long as you have a steady water flow coming out the engine, you have nothing to worry about. Sometimes it's just the water pressure from your hose is too high and the small engine doesn't require that much. The impeller in the lower unit will suck only the required water to cool the engine, and the rest leaves from any exit it finds.
      If you do not have water exiting the engine, you may have not aligned the tube that goes from the impeller up to the engine!!
      I will advise, please do not add silicone to seal the lower unit to its base.. as this will trap water and create corrosion.
      I will try and post a video about this first chance I get..
      Thanks, any other concerns.. just ask
