Exactly, why Cold Steel used AUS8A their version of the steel for Sooooo Long. It is a Very Tough Steel, easy to sharpen and nearly rust proof. Yeah, it might need some extra sharpening than super steels but if you sharpen often it takes no time and can be fun. Lilly's handle and Trekker shape is Super Functional.

250,- is much money for AUS8, but it performs really good. This one proofs that perfect hardening is an very important thing. More important than steel quality.
Impressive! I was not interested in it’s predecessor due to the AUS8 steel and the price but it appears to be very well heat treated and ground. AUS8 and 420HC are incredibly tough steels when heat treated properly. They just don’t hold an edge very long. If this was offered in Sandvik 14C28N I would probably get one.
Definitely best knife channel ever! Who wakes up and says 'I want to beet the sheet out of knives for a living'?! Joe X did. And with great success! Cheers mate!
Pretty damn tough I'd say. It took a lot of abuse. Maybe a thicker blade it could have taken more but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. JoeX you got to test the SXB next. Nice work Lilly,👍👍
Good test. I still think, AUS8 has been chosen by intention, because it's weak to avoid breaking. Hence, I wonder that the tip is coming off that quick and that much. However, you need to decide before purchasing, whether you like to have a blade with an edge retention that resists a lot of wood work before geting dull and an appropriate better overall performance or a blade that is less effective for generic usage, but due to weak AUS8 tuff for abuse.
More heavy Aichi steel looking good.. How about a side by side of the Ontario Rat1 in D2 and AUS8? Cheap to do, might be educational... Archi steels seem badly underrated
In my experience... AUS8 has held up long term. For me, it is a reasonable steel selection when it comes to several factors that should not be ignored: 1.) Most often 'blades' are stamped out of sheets of AUS8. This process helps create consistent results and is cost effective batch to batch. 2.) Both versatile and rugged/strong... having dependability attributes of Vanadium (impact resilience), Silicon (stress resistance), Molybdenum (lattice strain ie. it's going to take more to completely f-up the knife). High chromium (like 14-15% for corrosion resistance plus importantly tensile strength). To sum this stuff up you can get a tough hard working knife out of this stuff. Add to this small batch runs by a single quality/consistent manufacturer and good design qualities... You should see good results for the testing you are demonstrating. I think Lilly's knife held up very well. Regarding the scales: A.) Is bolt hardware for scales and liners not so good? or B.) Do you think proper torque and Loctite would have been a game changer? Without doubt Lilly did a good job with attention to detail on the ricasso and transitioning geometry into handle. Handle looked really good, but once the handle hardware fell off, I could really see this part of the design benefitting overall dependability.
yeah, loctite the screws, and they would have held up longer, they are the same scales as for the APO1S, and those scales were hard to kill!! i also shot them!!! check my vids!!! when i would have screwed them togehter when they came loose and loctite them, that would have done the job i think!
@@joex Yes maybe and hopefully so. Interestingly Checking torque and Loctite (green like same for firearms use) is what I highly recommend on Cold Steel Knives (like the Demko thumb-plates etc.) I also wonder if the APO series are AUS8-A vs AUS8? AUS8-A is generally tougher from annealing process, however it may have more rolling and not take/hold as sharp an edge. If I was to totally beat on a knife --- I'd go AUS8-A. If I wanted to get the finer edge (believe it or not in this category) I'd go 8cr13mov. If all I was looking for in category was sharper edges and seeking sharpness retention then 14c28n
@@SurvivalLilly Thank you for the reply Lilly. This makes sense to be AUS8 vs. AUS8-A. I'm pretty certain it would be more available selection by being made in Japan and now supposedly some in China. That being said... they are recipe-wise, composition of the same steel with ingredients... the exception 'maybe' that AUS8-A gets heat treatment for slightly different properties. The strange thing is (not too certain on reasoning) that some use AUS8 & AUS8-A referencing interchangeably. 3v has much better corrosion resistance and takes an edge better there's more to knives then just brute strength. They can be strong as hell but not if it's a pile of rust
@@c.h.u.d My AUS8 blade never had corrosion. Survival Lilly used them in salt water and also had no rust. I think AUS8 performs also better by corrosion resistance than 3V. Only edge retention is better but this is for me only relevant by a folder not that much by a fixed knife.
Didn't know knife-testing could very so dramatic! Should be a show.
yeah! thanis!
Freaking fucking awesome!!!

Thank you sir! I appreciate the abuse you put these knives through. You give the knife world another view of what kind of abuse your knife can take if need be.

Aus 8A is not popular steel but i must say that is great steel for impact knives. For contact knives is terrible. That put him on high steps when we talk about military or survival stainless knives.
Ok, cool!🤟👍
