I have listened once again this evening, and have once again entered the "dark night of the soul". It really is quite extraordinary. "Many call out, but few are heard". I recall the late Swedish genius Allan Pettersson's words, "I am a voice crying out in the wilderness, and no one hears".
Somehow, that made me think of Thoreau and ""The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation, and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Fortunately, Pettersson is "heard" a lot more now, especially recordings under Segerstam and Lindberg. On the whole, Scandinavian composers are not played as much or known as well as they should be: there is a treasure trove of "unknown Scandies" waiting to play for us! Franz Berwald is one of my favorites.
This young Icelandic female composer demonstrates extraordinary depth of feeling. At 5'20" we enter truly into the valley of darkness, where there is nothing but remorse and desolation. Perhaps this is the dark winter of her homeland: what a terribly cold uninhabitable space!!
It's rather like today in the US. I am currently at 8° 46' 48.86" N and heading soon for 48.6502° N. Although I must fly over, I am so glad not to be there. I do fear for children and grands who are.
Her music is like a living organism, which moves, evolves and feels. It's incredible how she shapes experience.
Quite extraordinary! And very timely, for the world of today.
I comfortably sank deeply into this piece. Mesmerizing and energizing at the same time.
