Hi Will, as many things in capoeira, a lot depends on the culture and habits of the group/teacher. The palma pattern often depends on the toque being played by the berimbau. In my school, we play São Bento Grande de Angola (toque) and it fits nicely with the Palma de Terreiro. Other more regional-influenced schools often use Palma de Bimba with the São Bento Grande de Regional/Bimba toque. If you're at a roda, just watch for what the people on the instruments are doing, and how the more experienced people are clapping. Sometimes the lead on the berimbau will even *tap on the cabaça* the pattern they want to hear on palmas. Thanks for your question!
