In the essay "Wine When It Is Red," G.K. Chesterton discusses the topic of alcohol consumption and the societal attitudes toward it. He critiques the recent manifesto by doctors that addresses the dangers and benefits of alcohol. Chesterton argues that while alcohol can be harmful, it is a mistake to treat the desire for alcoholic beverages as a desire for alcohol itself. He highlights the complex relationship between humans and alcohol, emphasizing that human behavior cannot be reduced to simple physical terms. He points out the natural complexity of human life and its inherent risks, suggesting that alcohol is just one of many dangerous elements. Chesterton also criticizes the overly cautious and medicinal approach to drinking, advocating instead for a more casual and social attitude towards alcohol consumption. He proposes that public opinion and community norms should play a role in moderating excessive drinking, rather than strict medical or legal controls.

Great observations. I never heard anyone notice the oddity of the word "alcohol" coming from a people who abstain from it.
