Millions of Americans across the country have lost their jobs. But whether or not those people can get the unemployment benefits they deserve actually depends on where they live. In some states, more than two thirds of jobless people typically collect unemployment benefits. But in others, like Florida, fewer than one in 10 unemployed people get those benefits.
That massive difference has often been blamed on technology; Florida’s unemployment system is notoriously difficult to use. But technology doesn’t build itself. The real explanation requires a look at the ideology of the people who did.

@@dylan.s4898 Paying high taxes creates a country where a lot of money can be put into education, healthcare, and a solid safety net in case someones business fails or if they lose their job. This creates a system where a person doesn't have to live every day in fear that their life will get ruined by a system where it's "everyone for themselves". Even though you might not agree with that, it's definitely examples where a government is set up to benefit the people, and not corporations.

Everybody in the comments is saying the US’ welfare system is broken, but they fail to realize it was built to be difficult. If welfare was easy to obtain, more people would feel less of a need to get a job, this explains why welfare is hard to get and payments are low, and it also explains why the US’ poverty rate is lower then the “developed” countries it’s compared to. The poverty rate in the US is only 12%, compared to 20% in the UK and 15% in Germany. Considering the US’ size and population, these numbers are amazing, the welfare system is not broken, but instead effectively encouraging people to get jobs.

As a software developer, the bad experience achieved described about Florida's unemployment form is very likely to come from an unexperience team and not by design. Delloite has multiple teams, some are good and others are bad, there are differences withing this team about the UX they want to implement and the programming skills and features that are needed in order for the UX to be actually good and usable. New Zealand benefit system isn't that good really. Mainly thanks to National gutting the system and imposing more restrictions. I would say she was lucky, but many people with health issues have issues getting the benefit or even help finding jobs suitable for them. So many people can't get benefit cause their partner earns "enough" (not really). So they are potentially trapped in that relationship...

I then certified for my benefits weekly until my claim was processed and I started to get my payments. Michael Zeita is right, it's more of a Florida/conservative state issue than an all over America thing. I'm actually pulling in much more money on this unemployment claim than I was working. I was able to pay for an online course, and a new computer to take it with, which will help me get a work from home type job when I'm finished with the course. Not all of America us heartless.
