The Nepalese invasion of Sikkimese territory let Sikkim to seek assistance from the East India Company. In order to thwart Nepal’s ambition, Sikkim signed the treaty of TITALIYA in 1817 with East India Company. Britain was keen to find a trade route to Tibet and since the Nepalese would not grant such rights, it saw Sikkim as an ideal route to Tibet and them began its machinations in Sikkim until Sikkim became a protectorate of the British. However, the ruler of Tenzin Namgyal enjoyed full autonomy and the British did not interfere in Sikkimese affairs. The British however kept Sikkim under its sphere of influence in order to use the route to Tibet from Sikkim such as Chumbi valley to Gyangtse and from Shigatse to Calcutta and Darjeeling made Sikkim Britain’s core interest. This is how Sikkim came under British India’s influence.
