Having been following YES since 1971 and seeing them live 49 times, their music NEVER gets old/tired. Best band, ever. Period.
I have been a fan just about as long as a n 11 or 12 year old though I ve only been to five concerts of YES over the years and only once with their classic lineup!

This is one of those albums that is timeless and will still be being played a hundred years from now.

One of the best albums ever produced, played by some of the best musicians of the time.
The thing about Close To The Edge is just how ambitious & _audacious_ it was at that time (or any time in musical history for that matter) & by golly, _they _*_nailed it._* Complex? Are you kidding me? This song (& most of YES' masterpieces of this era) was incredibly _dense._ With Chris Squire, their virtuoso bass player, just dominating throughout, it was constantly experimental. When they'd feature keyboard or guitar solos playing against Squire's melodic groove, the way they orchestrated it, you're forced to listen to both simultaneously & with repeated listenings, it's eargasmic to listen to how they somehow made it work. YES' masterpieces weren't dance music to have playing in the background (even though they'd get really funky quite often). It usually requires your undivided attention. In spite of all that dedication to complexity & experimentation, they loved to *sing* which is clear when you listen to how soul-satisfying their vocal harmonies are. YES created music like no other band. I still consider their work during their Uber-Classical Period to justify the judgment that they were the best "rock" band ever...
Oh BTW, keep sticking to the studio recorded versions of their masterpieces...the quality of the mix is far, far superior to any of the live recorded performance. I suggest checking out their live performances later to satisfy your curiosity...

The true brilliance and magic of this piece is its as fresh and inspiring today as it did to me 50 years ago. I hope you hear the rest of the album just amazing. I always say this but YES will change your DNA.

What you just heard is a masterpiece, by true musicians, not computer generated garbage. Yes music is a journey. Close your eyes and they take you away. I'm 64 and enjoyed them from day 1. Thanks for sharing and exposing young ones to the real art of music.
As a young person, my perception of music changed forever the first time I heard this. Hundreds of listens later, I still rank it among my favorite songs. It was so fun to see your first encounter. 😊

I was a classically trained high school trumpet player ranked the top in my state. I went to see Yes in concert and stopped playing music altogether. I knew I could never achieve that masterful level of musicianship in my lifetime.
This is a masterpiece and my personal favourite by Yes! (released in 1972) Jon Anderson said it was inspired by the book Siddhartha by Hermann Hess which follows a young man's search for enlightenment,,,beginning at a river and ending at a river. Incredible musicianship!

So glad you made it to the Edge!! Your facial expressions were priceless. YES were a true collaboration back then, which makes the accomplishment even more impressive. This was released less than a year after Fragile w the same line-up, five masterful players, each of them very assertive players/composers.
These kinds of songs are best appreciated after hearing them a lot, most of us Yes guys have been listening to these epics for 30, 40, 50 years.

As a young musician who started taking music lessons in 1965 this song changed the course of my life in many positive ways. It sparked a life long interest in philosophy, spirituality and mysticism, and also led me to cofound a progressive rock band of little consequence in 1980. When I'm feeling overwhelmed and out of sorts I return to listen to this song and it always gets me centered, calm and at peace.

Yes was at the forefront of the progressive rock genre in the 70’s. Long, multi-movement pieces typified by transitions and tremendous musicianship. This is the ultimate expression of that.
Every band member contributed with their individual parts and assembled it all into one epic symphony. You felt it for sure. (just like we did when we first listened to it) Your reaction was really great. It does change a person - in a good way. Music is a big force. At the same time, I can also listen to some old blues stuff and get excited.
It ends exactly as it started, in nature, with flowing water, and birds chirping. Wind chimes. Love it.
To double down on what you were saying, I used to listen to this kind of music so much in junior high in high school and then in college years.
It not only takes you on a journey, and sometimes it almost seems like it's a modern form of a symphony, or an opera, but for me also it really invites mental imagery to go with the music. And as a musician of course I always love the formidable talent that goes into bands like this.
I get the same feeling from Rush and King Crimson and Kansas as well for example. I can see all kinds of incredible mental imagery to these when I shut my eyes, but then they've got their moments where they really rock out as well.
This is the kind of song that can be difficult to listen to at first, especially the opening frenzy. But it is also the kind of complex song that just gets better and better the more you listen to it. It never gets boring. Keep listening to it now and then, maybe while doing chores. You have a lot to look forward to if you do.
Terrific reaction! The album is a true masterpiece! And with Yes, there's so much to discover. You should finish the album off with Siberian Khatru, then move on to stuff like I've seen All Good People, Yours Is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper etc etc..the catalog is deep. Enjoy your journey!!.

Always in my top 5 for all songs by all bands. They play this in concert very often and it is always equally as lovely live as it is on the studio version. When you consider there are only 5 musicians on stage makes it even more impressive. Now that you have expierianced it, you need to go back and listen again. This time you will be listening for the Morris Code played by Rick Wakeman at various times throughout the song. Once you hear it, you can't unhear it. Let us know what the message is. Hint, it is three letters. I listened to it for over 30 years until I finally realized it was there.
The cherry on the cake for this composition is the greatest ending of all time. The power the fullness the richness and passion , plus it ends upbeat is second to none.
There are songs, and then there is Beethoven's Ninth. Some might say that it too is just another song. It isn't. Nor is Close to the Edge.
Close to the Edge is in league with Beethoven's Ninth, Pink Floyd's "Echoes", Genesis' "Firth of Fifth", ELP's "Tarkus" and Renaissance's "Sheherazade"...all of which were made around the same time, at the height of the cultural renaissance taking place, and from whence much greatness may be minded. Good ears, mind and heart, mate!
Genius and daring at the early stages of progressive rock. To me the song feels like the building blocks to the universe and the earth as you have peace and quiet at first exploding into kaos and then forming a civilized world. Then finally ending in kaos!YES was the Mt. Rushmore of Progressive rock. So many bands like Rush and Dreamtheater tried to emulate this iconic band.Try Perpetual change which has many transitions!
I bought this album the month it was released. It changed my life, not only in my outlook(s), but in the way that I reacted to the "world" around me, and in what the "world" gave back to me. I STILL have that original album, and I still play it from time to time. I also have the original cassette, along with several copies on cd...one for the house, and one in my car. Every time I am on the road, this is cranked way up, this, and The Yes Album. The important thing to note here is how I think (and feel), listening to this masterpiece now, compared to the way it made me feel at 16 years of age. You need to listen to Yes. I mean, you really NEED to listen to Yes. Of all the progressive rock bands, King Crimson, Genesis, Electric Light Orchestra, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Uriah Heep, Caravan, Camel, Asia, etc., this is the ONE that has consistently changed (and grown), as I have changed and grown. Quite a phenomenon, don't you think? Anyway, next up...side two. "And You And I" is probably my favorite song of all time, and I sincerely hope that you enjoy it as much as I have over these past 50 years. Fifty years...and it is STILL fresh...still relevant. It is even better in concert!
I still listen to "Xlose to the Edge" quite often, esp on long road trips.
All you have to do to realize how incredible this piece of work is is to consider how long ago it was created. It was so far ahead of it's time. I had an epiphany when hearing it for the first time. I still have my original vinyl and yes, I've heard it live many times.

And it reminds me of my first impression which I've forgotten after 50+ years. It's RELENTLESSLY amazing, even at its most calm & BEAUTIFUL. This groundbreaker shook the Progrock genre at its core in 72. Kind of leaves you, speechless! It does change you! From here, YES went over the edge with more EPIC unbelievable albums to follow! Those bass lines are done with a Plectrum (pic) Squire, god rest his soul, was a virtuoso as are the rest of the musicians in the band....When you've heard this, HEARD this song a hundred times, you understand it's profundity much more and its contribution to the prog genre...
There are live versions of this song that sounds exactly the same as the studio! Amazing musicians.

My first YES album (almost 50 years ago) was the live album "Yessongs" (3 vinyl records, 2 hours of music). There's also a live version of "Close To The Edge" on there. Maybe I'm a bit biased because for me these live versions are "the original" and not the studio recordings, but I like most of the songs better in the "Yessongs version" (despite the poorer sound quality). “I’m always missing something” on the studio recordings. If you want, you can listen to "Close To The Edge" from the Yessongs album (doesn't have to be on your channel) and form your own opinion. There are also videos about it, but they are “subterranean” in terms of picture and sound quality.
As Jon Anderson the lead vocalist said in a Dan Rather interview. When asked, what is progressive rock ? Jon said, its adventurous music. Boom, nuf said.
I don't know how many times I have heard somebody say "this feels like my life has changed" while listening to YES. It's almost a spiritual/musical "awaken"ing (no pun intended) 😉. I've been a music lover for 65 years on this earth and have never heard a more talented, creative, spiritually uplifting band yet. If you were me, you would move on through the next (and only) 2 songs on this amazing album..."And You and I" and "Siberian Khatru". Love your channel! Oh..."Awaken" is a must listen to YES song (if you didn't get the pun).

This is possibly the best prog rock song ever. I never get tired of it. A close second is "The Gates of Delirium". But I would do "Awaken" before that one. Great reaction. I've heard this 100 times. I didn't come here just to hear the music! I'm interested in your thoughts and reactions to it. Go ahead and talk about it a lot! This is one of the greatest pieces of music ever made. Oh, and this is the original version and it was published on September 13, 1972.
It's quite obvious to me what 'Close To The Edge' is about. Life and the Circle of Life. The beginning is quiet and ethereal, like being in the womb would be. Then it gets chaotic as all get out, referring to one's childhood and adolescent years. And finally, gradually, it resolves to joy, happiness and wisdom. Finally, it reverts back to where one came from and leads to one's final renewal of the universe...death. It's so simple and yet everyone tries to decrypt some hidden meaning in Jon Anderson's lyrics...of which there isn't any.

This album has been called by many “experts” in progrock, to be a “perfect album”. I completely agree. The genius they packed into a mere 3 songs is musically miraculous. Even reviewers who don’t particulaly like YES, agree that this album is superior to anything in its genre. That my friend, is huge. Enjoy privately and see how it affects you. It will.
