Still haven't bothered with any of the Champion matches. They're basically whale bait or "Grind every single day for weeks to upgrade all your weapons and armor" bait.
Don't need to upgrade equipment since the bonus is negated in the arena. The arena units are top tier, so if you intend on doing the harder content in the game, I'd go for them.
It's a JRPG, you do have to grind since that's part of the game. But do it at your own pace. I would recommend to try the arenas since the units are good especially varkyn and Tikilen.

Nope only one shield point per character even with dual casts / actions

447, with speed buffs its close to 500.
