भारत की पहली स्पेंस थिल्रर । गोल्डन जुबली फिल्म । उस समय सिनेमा हॉल सिर्फ दिल्ली बम्बई कलकत्ता जैसे शहरों में ही थे । भारत के दूसरे छोटे शहरों में सिनेमा हॉल ही नहीं थे । सिर्फ तीन चार शहरों में सिनेमा हॉल होने के बावजूद भी इस फिल्म ने एक करोड़ रुपए का बिजनेस किया ये एक करोड़ का बिजनेस सिर्फ सिनेमा हॉल की टिकटों की कमाई थी इसमें आज की तरह पोपकोर्न और कोल्डड्रिंक के पैसे शामिल नहीं थे । और उस समय टिकट का दाम दो तीन पैसे से ज्यादा नहीं था । इस फिल्म को बनाने में बारह से पंद्रह लाख रुपए लगे थे । उस समय के एक करोड़ रुपए आज एक हजार करोड़ रुपए के बराबर होते होंगे ।
हाँ सर् सच में मैं 2003 का हूँ पर पुरानी पिक्चर्स की बात ही कुछ और होती थी 😄😄😄

Ashok Kumar is so underrated. His level of natural acting I don't think anyone can level up to him . Gem of a person .
He had won filmfare awards, national awards, conferred with Padma Bhushan and also the winner of Dadasaheb Phalke award. He is referred as the mega legend/ mega icon of Indian cinema. He was the first superstar of Indian cinema, first anti-hero of Indian cinema. He gave the first blockbuster movie grossing 1 crore to Indian cinema ('Kismet'). He is also credited for introducing natural acting in Indian films. He influenced many actors, and even Dev Anand considered him as his inspiration. He was the most respected personality of the film industry. He gave Dev Anand his first film as a hero, launched Pran and Kishore Kumar in the film industry, gave first breakthrough to many people in the industry including Madhubala, Lata Mangeskar, B.R. Chopra, Bimal Roy, Shakti Samantha, etc., who later made big names in the film industry, he mentored Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and many such contributions. Even Dilip Kumar used to take suggestions for acting from him. He played all kinds of diverse roles in his career, ranging from a young lover to a strict grandfather. I don't think anyone can match up with his acting versatility. A complete actor in true sense. From 'Achhut Kanya' in 1930s to 'Shaukeen' in 1980s, he gave hit movies for 5 decades. He was also part of many successful TV serials of 1980s. Not only a great versatile actor, but also a trained singer having sung numerous songs in 30s & 40s (interestingly, he is also credited for singing the first rap song of India). A gem of a person he was. His legacy is beyond anyone's imagination. I think he truly deserved Bharat Ratna for his large contributions to Indian cinema

It’s been 65 years of this movie now. What a great direction and fabulous song by the one and only lata ji. Madubala a timeless beauty ❤, she just aged better like fine wine. This movie did a business of 1 crore during the time of independence. 1 crore is equivalent to 1000 now. Bollywood don’t make musical themed movies like this anymore
My.mother used to say ...this was a story of three births ..... when first time released in fifties.....the end of the movie was not sad.....the couple returns buys the same mahal in their third birth...when i saw in 1989 the end was same as now shown....end is differnt from original movie.
It's good that they changed the end..otherwise there would have been no poetic justice...that unscrupulous " Mallan" Asha is a culprit...if indeed it's a story of reincarnation..n she was some kamini then it means she had been playing with lives of other ppl for her own selfish ends...if Shankar indeed was her past birth lover..it means that he was keeping her surreptitiously in a " Mahal" as a mistress...while visiting her regularly from his home..he must be having a family..even then she wronged his wife & family...But I think there was no reincarnation...only a sordid play enacted by a mallan to entrap some rich guy in guise of a spirit...she wouldn't have come out with truth..if Ranjana hadn't left a letter mentioning her...
