    great discussion. when i first tried getting into shmups, i was definitely out of my element by playing games on difficulties outside my experience, even when trying to credit feed, it sort of turned me off of them for a while. the beginner list has been super helpful in me getting more into shmups and also i'm having a blast playing through these games and it's really fulfilling to feel like i am starting to get a little better.

    Major props for putting this together! I’m at the beginning of my shmup journey, and though I’ve found lots of great resources out there, this is the first one I’ve seen that is created by fellow beginners. Love it!

      It's a big part of how we curate the list! I'm by no means a beginner any more so I myself am not allowed to add to the list or give opinions, we get actual beginners to curate the games so we can be sure there isn't something that we're missing that will trip up a beginner!

      @@AKTANEARCADE Ah, yes, that makes sense. Two games I wanted to ask about, since I will own them in the near future, are Deathsmiles & Deathsmiles 2. I’ve seen at least the first game listed as a beginner-friendly shmup elsewhere. Do y’all think either of them fits anywhere on this list?

    • @AKTANEARCADE
      @AKTANEARCADE  2 роки тому +1

      @@RobotPlaysGames I think they're right on the edge, Deathsmiles 2x with Rosa was very chill for me, Deathsmiles 1 was a bit too difficult. It's a little odd with those because I'm the ports you can pick level 1 difficulty for each stage but then the castle will be super hard difficulty spike, for example in the first one. The second one has a more level playing field. I think you can work on them and clear them but they are pretty difficult at first for a beginner for 1CC. They're not unobtainable though, and on the easier side. The mechanics in the games can be a bit complicated too, so it's maybe a lot to take in for a beginner.

    Amazing concept. A thoughtful list (thanks! I'll be using it).
    2 games that I'm surprised are not on the list are Barrage Fantasia (the UA-cam Shmupers around you have posted several great UA-cam vidoes that got me back into it) and Neko Navy by DeathMofuMofu.
    Neko Navy is initially pretty easy and has an award structure that directs the player towards an increasing challenge. It is also widely available and has a relatively simple scoring system for an STG/Shmup.

    • @AKTANEARCADE
      @AKTANEARCADE  2 роки тому +1

      Barrage Fantasia is on the list under Spicy! It's a great game!
      Neko Navy we should definitely consider.. though the game is a little odd and has some weird spikes, it does teach resource management and abundant bomb use ...We'll need a beginner to curate that one and then it'll go on 👍🏾

    I absolutely love this list, seeing the orange change to green when I get that clear is a super great feeling!
    I did have two suggestions to make: the Touhou spreadsheet is kind of hard to just read right off since the titles only have the number of what it is in the series, and I had to keep going back and forth trying to figure out which game is which. For instance on Steam, they don't usually give you what number it is in the series, just the name. I eventually just changed all the cells to have the names after, like "Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom" which has helped a lot. I wasn't even brand new to Touhou, but had a lot of trouble with the readability of the list.
    The other suggestion was 2 games that are super beginner friendly and I don't see brought up nearly at all on the shmup side of youtube: Cosmo Dreamer and Like Dreamer, both made by the same dev. They are both super solid games that I honestly feel like should be brought up more often as a recommendation to those who are just starting their shmup journey
    Thanks for yall's work! And Aktane, when I heard you talking about Crimson Clover's Novice mode on Mark's podcast, and how you got the 1cc after realizing bombs are tied to a meter, I revisited that game and after a couple of days of grinding some runs and training against the stage 5 boss and TLB, I was able to squeeze out the 1cc! So thanks for helping me realize to actually take advantage of the resources the game gives you lol

    • @AKTANEARCADE
      @AKTANEARCADE  2 роки тому

      Great suggestions! I love cosmodreamer 😬 haven't played like dreamer yet but that dev absolutely NAILS game flow, the stage flow and rhythms Is mind blowing. I'll have some folks curate those games ASAP! On the Touhou list, we can add the names! Thank you!

    • @AKTANEARCADE
      @AKTANEARCADE  2 роки тому

      Okay we've added the names, RE: Cosmodreamer easy we need to figure out if we can add with a caveat. Here's what happened with your beginner player, they played well, no missed the game and then got the TLB stage at the end and got crushed by the massive difficulty spike. And that really deflated them... I don't know if that's the right beginner experience

    • @epi652

      @@AKTANEARCADE I wish that YT would actually notify me when there's a reply lmao. I literally just stumbled upon this wondering if there had ever been another reply. Hmmmm, I mean everyone is going to have a different experience their first time, and that's applicable to any game on the list. I just suggested Cosmo Dreamer as a beginner friendly game as it is super forgiving, especially when choosing your loadout as you can boost the shield even further than boosting another weapon. And also the progression of the game, as you complete every stage, stage-by-stage to unlock the arcade mode (called Trials mode for whatever reason in the game). I just replayed the last stage, and I do see what you mean about it being a difficulty spike, as I cleared the stage with 2-misses just now on "Casual", and more than likely my first time through I had to restart the stage. But with everyone being different, your beginner player no-missed the whole game except for the last stage, whereas I definitely died many times the first time I played. My first 1cc was Imperishable Night, and all Touhou games get much more difficult past stage 3. I kept dying to Marisa (stage 4 boss playing as Reimu) over and over and over again until I could beat her. And Imperishable Night is listed as "Brand New to Shmups," though all Touhou games are hard, even on Easy, especially to newbies. But yeah I'm not exactly sure then. Because a 1cc of Cosmo Dreamer clearly isn't Spicy or Very Spicy, and nearly any TLB is going to be a difficulty spike. Sorry, I just thought it was an ideal candidate for the list, but I understand that not everyone will have the same experience with the game as I did, and I definitely don't want to recommend a game that will only leave somebody deflated :(

    I am so glad I ran into this list. Originally I wanted to go through some classic series like R-Type and Gradius, but now I know these are a pain in the butt, while I enjoy the games from the list much more.
    As a note, I find the Touhou games from the Brand New section comparatively challenging. Touhou 8 required a couple of hours of practice with Reimu, Touhou 6 still is a 3cc after 3 hours of practice, while I went through Mushihimesama futari novice original/maniac with different characters and Danmaku Festival II like it was a toddler's game.

      @@AKTANEARCADE hey man, I have progressed quite a bit on this list - today finally Mushi OG novice 1cc after weeks of failure and frustration -, and so I would like to give you some more pointers.
      Most of the games in the brand new to shmups section I played (and liked) were a 1cc on first or second attempt. The one title you might want to reassess would be DDP DFK novice 1.5 imo. I think it's comparable to Mushihimesama Futari Novice Ultra (spicy section), but it throws even more stuff at you. In terms of difficulty I would rank this challenge between Mushi Futari Novice Ultra and Mushi OG Novice Original, so more like Spicy section.
      Regarding the Touhou titles the easiest and most beginner-friendly games in my opinion are Danmaku Festival 2 -> Blue Devil -> Danmaku Festival 1 -> Touhou 8 (if you use Reimu/Barrier team because it gives you a generous deathbomb window). I would put all the other Touhou titles (so far) at least into Spicy. These games are not very generous with lives and bombs and there is also no autobomb which would essentially allow you to take considerably more hits.

    Really great list! I play shumps from time to time for 2-3 years now. I am now at a state where I have 1cc'd Crimzon Clover arrange, DFK (1 loop) and Batsugun special. Before that it took some time to beat Ketsui Deathtiny Mode, for example. Now this mode seems like a cakewalk to me. All the super easy modes are "too easy" now. However, at the moment I am at a point where there is a great wall. I do not see how it would be possible for me to beat Dodonpachi or Radiant silvergun.

    • @AKTANEARCADE
      @AKTANEARCADE  2 роки тому

      Hmm interesting there's a lot for me to say here, for one, in the very spicy section of the list, none of those will be "super easy" levels of easy... So try some of those! They still might be too easy but won't be pushovers... 🤔 there's a lot that could be stopping you from moving forward in the games you mentioned. There are some good intermediate Shmups but it really becomes about what you enjoy and can dedicate yourself to. I find a lot of console Shmups fit this intermediate category. Me for example I (with a lot of hours) cleared DDP in my first year, and it was pretty hard, but based on your clears, it would be attainable but difficultyl stretch goal for you with some practice, I recommend C-S ship. Radiant Silvergun is a bit too confusing unless you followed a strategy because in addition to dodging there is a lot of experimentation required. I would not go for that yet. Some great intermediate games are like Eschatos Original, GG Aleste 3, Zanac Neo, Recca, Cho Ren Sha (1-all), Cotton Reboot and if you're feeling very spicy maybe Mushi Original 1.5 (M Shot) or DDP 1-all with CS. @@AKTANEARCADE definitely the modes. The modern gleylancer has a modern mode which allows switching of modes and a twin stick like control scheme in which you can control you secondary weapon via right stick, which vintage aka mega-drive/genesis ver does not have. Also there are save states, and even a "cheat mode" iirc I have never used this before so I can't comment on it. Very beginner friendly imo.

    I started randomly really liking shmups with the strikers/gunbird games on my smartphone, they were amazing with clean visuals, multiple aircrafts, good sprite artworks and cool bosses etc the only problem was they were REALLY hard, all I could achieve was a 2cc on the First difficulty level of gunbird 2 and strikers 3, the next difficulty (normal lol) was just crazy brutal it wasnt even fun anymore, almost insane :( such a waste of such many cool things...
    So i started searching for "strikers like" games on my switch but more straightforward, not too long and "Easy" (if anyone have any suggestion please suggest!), i found out Missile Dancer and i fell in love with it.
    I managed to 1cc multiple times and really loved everything about It and wanting to play and master the harder difficulty level. I would really suggest It to anyone who Just started with shmups given it's accessibility ^^ such a cool game! Again, anyone with more knowledge the me suggest me other "strikers like games"", i Just Need more of em on my switch!

      @@AKTANEARCADE Thank you! Btw the discussion was amazing, It was super empathetic with the p.o.v. of new players which Is really rare in the general shmup discussion. I think the main problem of this genre Is that, or you have been playing videogames since the arcade times so you know where you are throwing yourself into or you must be 1) interested in such a niche genre + 2) be lucky to find in the First 2-3 games (before you start doubting the genre and if it was all a money waste) the one that really vibes with you and doesnt feel like unfair, chaotic, and a waste of money which as of today you could have spent on really enormous, accessible, attractive games given how infinite Is the modern market. That, plus the fact that generally the games usually suggested for new players, as you too said, are not even that good to start with, to even make the entry in the genre even less frustrating...
      There are SO MUCH MANY old arcade and new (and very difficult) shmup games that are made for and by those specific "veteran" players that as a beginner, given this widespread 1cc mentality too, it looks cool but playing it makes you feel frustrated or inadequate etc
      People generally entering a videogame, especially maybe simple looking as a shmup, don't expect to have to organize the gameplay almost as a job by playing every level 20/40 times to then "be able to play It".
      I think as for now it's yet a niche genre super close on itself and with a pool of games generally too hardcore and money risking for any newbie even just a bit interested in it but with almost no background knowledge, and as you said i think too that in the next years it should have some must have new standards like an on/off autobombing mode, possibility to play separate stages, novice mode etc etc It needs to generally evolve and compensate the enormous pool of hard games with a lot of accessibility to expand the player base and having more money running increasing so the numer of games and quality.
      Keep up the good work and sorry for the long text but i really liked this conversation, It was just too good and rare ^^

      @@Sweetroll_EXE all good excellent points and I couldn't agree more! And I'm glad you agree because I've been saying this for a while but it falls on deaf ears fast... So I decided in Trying myself to create content that is sympathetic to this, we even had a podcast talking about 1CC Mentality on my channel that you might be interested in peeking at, as well. I'll keep this mind and keep thinking on ways to explain this perspective. I also guest starred on The Electric Underground podcast and said many of the same things as above, especially on the price point of a Shmup! In any case, see if you can use the list to get some more beginner wins under your belt 😊 and if you have more feedback for the list, please let us know. Shmups are a frustrating genre in general but the point was to limit that frustration for a newcomer and give them a breadth of opportunity so they can find a game that looks and sounds cool to them, but is also manageable.

    I would love to know your opinions about "Caladrius Blaze" by MOSS (Raiden Series) and its beginner friendliness. It was my first serious shmup and I found its easier modes not too shabby.
    Edit: I'm currently trying to run through your list, at least the "Switch" Titles. And while I'm replaying Jamestown+ I came to the conclusion that this game shouldn't be tiered like it is here. Especially the last two stages "New Madrid" and "Croatoa" would be the downfall for everyone who is "Brand new to shmups" You can't even play those two levels in "normal" mode. "New Madrid" needs to be played at least in difficult and "Croatoa" needs a Legendary clear on every level before and its lowes difficulty is also Legendary. So I would move the Full Storymode to "Very Spicy" and the addition that you should play the gauntlet in co-op("Spicy"). The aspect ratio adds an additional layer of difficulty to this game in single play, imo. I would also specify the the "Brand New to Shmups" Tier is limited to the Normal Difficulty. And would make an additional Entry in "Spicy" for the Difficult setting and "New Madrid" .
    The Regular 1CC Gauntlet should be placed in "Very Spicy"

    • @Chinopolis
      @Chinopolis 2 роки тому +2

      Good points on the story mode, we'll have to take another look at that. As for the regular 1cc Gauntlet, being that it's only 3 stages and 11minutes total, good use of the Vaunt system can make it quite forgiving. Much more so than the rest of the clears in Very Spicy which can push even more experienced players.
      As for Caladrius Blaze, we did take it into consideration however there were a few hang-ups. When playing as Sophie and making using of the shields it is definitely very forgiving, but now you're balancing 4 different weapons, 3 of which have a resource to manage on top of bombs and proper weapon leveling. We like to make sure the games on the list are fairly straightforward which is why something like Akai Katana isn't on there.
      Besides the odd control scheme the last level is a huge difficulty spike with the entire stage having aimed spikes that even Sophia's shield can't absorb. Then last boss is just strange in that it's really hard to tell what parts of it can actually hurt you. I personally enjoy the game but I would suggest Raiden V over this to a beginner, which is why we are currently vetting that one.

So it's not on the list. The other 3 games are great! Theyre just a little difficult and/or too specific for the list but someone coming out of the list could tackle any of them for sure. This is what our beginners have said. We rely on beginners for our beginner list and take their comments into consideration.

      You know it's funny that you should ask this! I have been dabbling in this game and I would say that the difficulty is high, and that is because in this game, you should not be dodging anything, you should know beforehand exactly where to be and what to do. There is some dodging in earlier stages, but this seems like an extremely route heavy game. I find it hard to judge difficulty of those because my personal skill set in routing and memorizing is extremely poor 😂.
