Maybe ask them on what occasions the government will reduce the GST? And why is PM Lee putting money into the reserve ( said by Lee hiseng loong) and not the government putting the money into reserve?
Say you have 30 pieces of land. You sell 1 this year for $1mil. Next year you sell another one at $1.05 mil because of 5% inflation and you repeat the process every year. In 30 years, the process repeats itself for the first property you sold earlier. So, should we keep all the sale proceeds every year or spend part or all of them? Don't forget, we also collect taxes and makes money on investments (GIC, MAS, Temasek, etc.).
Reasonably, if Retro theoretically, if you have 30 plots of Land. 1. I would lease all and put 100% of 10 plots of land proceeds at a fixed long-term compounding interest rate of 3-5% to cut inflation depreciation. 2. Use all of the proceeds of 5 Plots of land for the current generation of people (in present day value) to cut their cost of living, provide cheaper high standards of medical coverage, free Education till Secondary and mitigate a cushion for retrenched or out of job Singaporeans for 3 months till they can get a Job. They will get 1 month upfront + 2months after they are successful in getting a job and stay in it till their confirmation. 3. Finally use the balance 10 plots of land into investment under GIC to create NIR for following years of budgets.
What loop holes? I don't agree with many things the PAP does. Like raising GST. However, it is a bad idea to publicise to the world our reserve numbers. The moment foreign countries know our reserves. They can target the strength of our currency especially during hard times, to sink our economy. Honestly, just think about it rationally. Do you tell your whole family exactly how much money you have? I doubt so. So, why not? That is because even if it is family, you know they might take advantage of your financial situation. So, you only tell the people that you trust in your family. The problem is, how do we know which citizen to trust? Can we trust all 3 million plus citizens to keep the reserve numbers a secret? I doubt that is going to happen. So, like it or not, the reserve numbers need to be a secret for our country's safety. There are other ways to keep the government in check without shooting ourselves in the foot.
