  • ** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
    What an extraordinary time this is for variant sudokus. The last few days have featured exceptional puzzles and now here is yet another: Magnus Josefsson's Chaos FilloSudokumino has been praised to the nines by the community and now we get to solve it. It's weird but it's utterly wonderful.
    You can try it at the link below:
    app.crackingth...
    Rules:
    Place a number in every cell of the grid such that: 1. There is a 9x9 subgrid that forms a valid standard sudoku; and 2. Disregarding the interior 7x7 area of the sudoku subgrid, the rest of the grid (including the 1-cell wide perimeter of the sudoku grid) forms a valid fillomino. [Standard fillomino rules are as follows: a) Divide the grid into regions of orthogonally-connected cells and enter into each cell the size of its region; b) No two regions of the same size may share an edge.

    Thank you so much for featuring my puzzle!
    Simon, I am always impressed by your ability to so calmly and pedagogically explain every deduction while solving the puzzle for the first time. You really did a masterful job making it all understandable even for viewers unfamiliar with fillominos.
    On another note -- In case there is someone who liked this puzzle but thought it was much too easy and that the grid was way too small then you are in luck :). I have another sudoku-fillomino hybrid coming up on logic masters germany in a week or so that should provide quite a lengthy challenge.... :)

      @@tezcharold No, I understand his concern. If you think about his expanation, it was intuative to understand but it wasn't rigorously proven. Its proven enough to be useable, but if it were a mathematical proof, it wouldn't hold up to scrutany.
      Consider Simon's personality, and use him proving any Set theory puzzle. He shows it using absolute terms in multiple ways by treating the grid like an algebra equation. Whereas this proof was very "feely."

      i would say that for myself i intuitively understood and accepted it. however, i'm not sure if it would meet the criteria for a formal logical proof, which is i think what simon was concerned about.
      it was of course true, because simon's brain has the most insane knack for intuitively understanding things like that!

    • @johnson911
      @johnson911 2 роки тому +3

      @@dwebb2805 the proof I used is that the best case scenario is high digits on the top and bottom of the column and low digits in the middle. Taking the corner digits vertically out, you don't have enough squares to fill in all the low digits.

  • @DArtagnonW
    @DArtagnonW 2 роки тому +25

    Not sure if this is rigorous enough either, but proof that the sudoku grid can't be within 1-square of the puzzle edge:
    Suppose a 9x1 column had a best case arrangement {875312469}, allowing 9 and 8 fillominos to escape freely, 7 and 6 to escape but sealing in a 1x5 region. You're left with 10 squares to populate 5+3+1+2+4 = 15 area worth of fillominos.

    • @Khellr0s
      @Khellr0s 2 роки тому +15

      Yeah, that's actually the logic I used for this deduction when setting the puzzle :). No matter the arrangement only 4 polyominoes can escape and the remaining five would have a maximum of 10 cells.

    Ahhh, this Sting guitar intro - such a good song and such a lovely version you played! Also such a lovely occasion - i don’t know the birthday girl Alexis, but I’m sure you’ve made her very happy with that thoughtful gift.
    While I’m already commenting: I really appreciate you both on this channel for always taking the time to be kind to viewers, be it through little birthday greetings, your general friendly, polite, and calm conduct on screen, or when taking the time to explain things to new viewers. It’s such a welcoming place to be on the internet that I always want to come back to it even if I have little time in the day. All on top of those very interesting and difficult puzzles of course - that’s what hooked me in ca. 2.5 years ago! - but we all know already that this channel is the home port of great puzzle makers and puzzle solvers alike.
    I’m glad you’re here to share the joy of puzzles with us so many years into the channel (and somewhat less years into the pandemic), that you do it in such a friendly and welcoming way, and that so many people have come to participate in the fun in a (for the most part) respectful and kind manner. Thank you for your work and efforts!

    I first watched Simon's solve. There were a few steps I couldn't have guessed (the 7s), and a few others I noticed before him (the 1s) and shouted at my screen. Once he discovered the location of the sub-sudoku grid, I was so high on joy and excitation I had to give the rest of the puzzle a try by myself. I solved the rest alone in 53min.
    I'm a bit sad I didn't solve the entire puzzle by myself, but still very happy I did solve the end!
    A big thanks to Simon and Mark for making me discover the "real" sudokus and puzzles. I'm realizing that my level in puzzle solving has so much increased: at first I wasn't able to solve the same sudokus as you, and now I'm able to solve even the hard sudokus (considering the difficulty proportional to the length of the video). So a big THANK YOU!

    Regarding a proof that the sub-grid could not be beside a one-cell strip, it helps to think about the secret: every digit in the sub-grid’s outer columns or rows differ and are part of a valid fillomino and therefore must be able to access 45 cells between them.

It's often a minor concern of mine with puzzles like these that involve lots of line drawings and coloring that the grid will end up looking rather chaotic. Of course, it's expected that the grid will look chaotic during the solve but I personally love seeing how crisp and clean a fully solved puzzle looks; especially puzzles with a variety of colors and markings.

    1:07:10 I came to this point and noticed a sort of meta insight that you could use to define these early:
    The number of cells available for the 8 in the 4-8 pair is actually 9 so you would have to place a 1 fillomino to complete it.
    If the 8 was below, then the 1 fillomino could go in 2 locations with no restrictions meaning the puzzle would have 2 solutions.
    Assuming there is only one solution as we do on this channel then we know that the 8 must be above, albeit through the presumed uniqueness of the puzzle.
    Of course it gets filled in for the single solution by sudoku later but I thought it was an interesting notion and I wonder if there's any cheeky puzzle built where meta knowledge about what causes multiple solutions would have to be used

    At 1:07:15 there is a fillomino uniqueness trick one could use to disambiguate the 48 pair. If the 4 goes on top, there are two possible placements of the lonely 1 in column 1 that cannot be disambiguated. If the 8 is on top it forces the placement of the 1 in column 1.

    i was able to place the grid fairly easily, but i had to keep referring back to the video because i got stuck in the fillomino quite often. brilliant concept, puzzle, and solve! seems tricky at times but there is always a simple logical explanation for every step, and that's what i love about it. thank you for showcasing this one, this channel is helping me to steadily improve.

    It’s a pity that the middle sudoku box wasn’t a magic square - would have been a real puzzle turducken ! A challenge for setters to be sure … A few points to note: 30:45, that orange sudoku grid is impossible due to the earlier logic (there is a 1 in R3C13) 56:38 Should be “3 or SEVEN only”. Well explained solve otherwise. 👍

    I put in well over an hour on this one and broke ... but I'm not ready to quit; just no time to continue today. Will come back to this one on the weekend ...
    ... and indeed, I gave this a second shot and was able to finish with an additional time of 48:32 (it helped that I did find the sudoku's location the first time around; my error involved filling in the left side of the grid). What more is there to say; this is simply remarkable.

    Yet another astonishingly good puzzle. Brilliantly set and solved. Love the novelty of this ruleset and love the solve path, from the sudoku grid placement to the fillomino bits to the last sudoku bits. We really are on a brilliant run. The length of this video was not a detractor at all, as the pace was still very good, it’s just that there was a lot in the puzzle to be done! Only note: there is an inconsistency in the top left with the line drawing, you left a line through the As!

    If you want to be bold and use uniqueness, you could resolve the 4-8 pair on the left earlier. If the lower one was an 8 it would give 2 options, as the 1 could go where it is, or in the top cell of that column of 8s.
