To my eye this new version looks so uninspiring with this extra module and the case. The older one had such a beautiful finish and having the extra functions on the side of the unit would safe space and make it so much more pleasing to look at and use. Same with the 218..saw it already in person and it simply looks really cheap. The older versions looked so beautiful and were extremely pleasent to touch. Maybe that's just me who cares a lot about the aesthetic and user interface.
A little steep, but having 0 west coast devices in my studio, this is probably the best and archetypical piece of kit representing that philosophy, made even more appealing with the preset managing gizmo, so definitely putting this on the serious consideration to buy list. PS: Consider this a vote for putting an oscilloscope in the window area.
Lots of hate on this video. I think it looks amazing. A true classic with some solid updates. There is no indication of poor build quality. Looks completely worth the price. Look at the price of a make noise or verbos system. Which are both obviously inspired by buchla. This isn’t a mono synth. It’s a modular system. A remake of a classic. Buchla has had some quality issues in the past but the company is under new ownership. Finally I don’t think Marc Doty would tie his name to a product he didn’t believe was great.
I agree mate. I think some of the hate comes from the whole "taming the beast" approach to the resign. AKA the have built a far more commercially sellable product. For me, the whole thing is a moot. I'd rather have adecent pc running diva and pigments nowadays My current setup is Atruria Matrixbrute, Roland TR8, some Behringer clones, and a medium sized modular system. I use a computer for recording and audio editing but usually avoid the pc for sequncing these days. Yes, I'll use VSTis etc but not always quantised tto the grid Personally, I enjoy the HW stuff because the knobs and sliders are always in the same place But, I'd have to think hard about adding more HW to the setup. Modern virtual instruments, effects, and most importantly sound can all be top shelf as far as I can hear HW controllers are also getting very user friendly. And if that doesn't work for you, go wild with and Arduino, some pots and a soldering iron (way easier than it looks by the way) This Easel reissue looks very cool. If you want a hands-on but different synth this looks like a nice proposition 😂 Obviously I've gotten seious gear lust here! Anyone wanna go swapsies for a Matrixbrute and a kidney? 😂
Sorry Marc but, you are wrong this time. The polyphony count on the Easel is actually two. Each oscillator has it's own Filter/VCA (or LPG) section and can be independently played via the touchplate keyboard, 5 stage sequencer, looping envelope generator, random source generator, pulser, or arpeggiator. Most easel owners know this, and you should by now...
Love Dotsters answer to the polyphony question, almost comedy timing there ….. “One……” (flipping mono!!!). Anyway short demo sounds nice, just jealous really 😔
I actually thought it was quite well done. Sticking a camera in someone's face as they exhibit can be a bit nerve wracking and Marc just flowed right through this.
@@EarmonkeyMusic started synth Oct 21 with moog sound studio. Really blown it out since. It’s bad. Filled up a room. My next step is the big boys…buchla being one. This video made buchla appear less epic than they are. I have only seen them with Ciani though. This is an objective comment. Lover your work and learn a lot here.
@@modeswitching no, they are not. Also, Harleys can acomodate 2 persons. There is no f*****g way this costs as much as a 5th of a new Harley Davidson for any good reason. Have you followed the mono synth market lately? It's not 1972 anymore. Also, those bikes improved over the years for a fraction of the cost.
@@modeswitching A more useful comparision would be the first celullar phone. Motorola Dynatac. Rereleased nowadays with the same price as in 1983: $3.999. Now improved with tiny screen and reset button. Less background noise (maybe, not guaranteed). And a programmer to save phonecalls, because apparently we still live in the 80s. Not included, of course. I bet it costs another half of k. Totally worth it. Right.
Bro, the originals are like 8k. It's one of the most if not the most critically acclaimed synth machines ever built because of how freakishly unique it is. If you can't afford it (and I can't either) then just appreciate that someone actually took the time to bring back such an iconic synth and the music that will come out of it. An insane amount of time goes into something that isn't your standard synth plus there's overhead costs. Come on bro
You are obviously clueless Betu. First, it's two voices; each oscillator has it's own filter/vca (or LPG) section and can be independently played via the touch plate keyboard, 5 stage sequencer, looping envelope generator, random source generator, pulser, or arpeggiator (just like the original design which was WAY ahead of it's time considering it came out around the same time as the Minimoog.) Couple that with it being an additive synth with a waveshaper, both AM and FM modulation, and so much more, this is what West Coast synthesis is all about, and its well worth the money. The new Minimoog Model D re-release is $5000 and can't do half of what an Easel can do. Just saying...

agreed. I am very disappointed about that and the fact that the original beautiful vintage reissue is 10k 😢
It's Mr. Doty! Love to hear that voice again!

Ahh, yeah... The famous west coast "philosophy": "Why have that functionality built in, when we can charge you more for a dongle?"
When I get into modular synths I'll start with this. I love the Buchla sound!

I think Dotty wishes he would present a Moog product. "Musically!? Lol"

Does that include the Easel Command?
@@vers1fier yes, though you would have to get the LEM 218 Touchplate controller if you want to play it from the touchplate and/or its Arpeggiator.

Does the program manager include patch routing?
Kinda a game changer, since only a couple of companies support the Euro equivalent
So funny when they gotta talk in these when playing speaks volumes more than any descriptive verse via 8:00
I'm surprised nobody filmed the Colossus synthi
I will be selling a lot of gear when this finally arrives.
Take my money
Microfreak could issue a Buchla silver, blue, white, red version.
Will the Presets be already on the card?
what about new AUX card?
Bet there was a lot of knobs there😆 Just doesn't sound right .
I literately have money tearing a hole in my pocket liners

I’ll wait for the Behringer version and save myself 4K ☺️
