Thank you adding this. I was vaguely aware of Rene Cutforth when he was working for the BBC, but not enough to appreciate what a fine journalist he was (I now own a couple of his books). Many of the BBCs journos had seen war as direct participants and they knew what it truly meant. This film is an important document.

Very much an underrated journalist and superb presenter ,even when North Korea was a fairly half normal country!

Amazed to see how impartial the BBC reporters were allowed to be back in those days.

Hm. Interesting. I was living in rural Korea as a Peace Corps volunteer, 1971 - 73. This reporter certainly comes in with his own perspective.

This historical journalism is very precious information on South Korea. I have been a western Koreanophile for a good 22 years having learned the korean language in 2002 and associated with many Koreans both natives and expatriates. It is rare to find any in depth information of how South Korean society functionned in the period after the Korean War ended and until the late 1990's. Most other videos are superficial. This 1971 document gives a more in depth glimpse and shows with real people examples how life was tough, full of corruption (still is), but in a full transformation of the country that Japan also went through except Korea started with litterally nothing at the end of Japanese occupation followed by a civil war by proxy between Usa and China that would repeat in Vietnam.
Some aspects of South Korean life described in this video still pervaded South Korean society a decade ago even if now standards have become more independent from the West, no longer looking up to the west, like the self flattery of "being emancipated and sophisticated in the western swim, judged scandalous by Asian standards" is waning off. I remember back in 2001 when i befriended foreign Korean graduate students in the Usa, it was like meeting people from a different historical time. A strangely very enriching experience for me and for them. Their parents must have been through the life shown in this video. they had the very characteristics and mentality presented in this video, including humility. Now Korean students studying abroad have changed a lot and have a proudly arrogant pride air about their country and nationality and are usually extremely prejudiced and contemptuous of other cultures with the exception of Usa that they have modeled on.
I admit that my views on South Koreans have become rather negative in recent years. I consider them one of the most xenophobic people on the planet, yet it is not an accusation but the realization and result of what their country have been through in the 20th century. It is rare to find other nationals than South Koreans that can be as prejudiced and without any moral conscience in their dealings with any other nationals. Chinese tend to have a similar reputation of hyper nationalism making it impossible for any foreign national to establish themselves in China unless they are in some way exploited or benefiting a local organization or being a utilized tool for government propaganda. At this point in historical time, South Korea has become the new 1980 Japan for the world. But i no longer feel drawn or intrigued by their culture. It is not a plus for the world but a minus. Their moral values are in negative territory and i wonder how long they can keep up their country like this. I see it as a moral desert but for now economically thriving Babylon.
