Brother I have been following this whole build both on Facebook in the forge building group and here on UA-cam. In addition I watched your whole build on the press. Don’t give up on the UA-cam deal, you’re making great products and your videos are well filmed. It’s only a matter of time before you blow up big time!
If you had the door out front a further 1/4” to expand the gap and then used one of those fibreglass rope gaskets that are used in fireplace doors that would make for a seal on the door that has variable flexibility on the gap.
Looking forward to your grinder build, I've just finished building the Jeremy Schmidt grinder from his on line plans. If you havnt seen his grinder you should have a look on here it's a real sturdy grinder which really helps with the vibration, something worth considering on yours. My first build was from lightweight box section and although it was fully functional it did vibrate a lot and of course this can affect your knife bevel lines a little.
Jon, I was 100% sure it's not air forced gas forge. I thought this barrel is empty and it suck and compress air. the back fire is common if you open air and gas first and than, fire forge up. Your design use vortex effect. I think there was gas-air mixture locked inside the forge (exactly in the center). It's the same thing like inside the cyclone- The where is no wind in the "cyclone eye". also the pressure there is lower, so If you burn it will suck the air from the vortex. This is my theory, but I can be totally wrong. Next time, Light the paper, put it inside the forge, open air lightly (to not extinguish paper) and then slowly add gas. The fire up should be more predictable. I like the way you think about the problems and solutions that can happens in the future, thermal expansion. Spiral inside door hinges should work. Great job! I'm waiting for the damascus!
Should of put the handle on the opposite side of the gas and put the gas valve upfront so you can look at the flame and adjust it
Very nice work. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎

Yes, I've seen his, it's definitely one of the best out there

Of course, paper, I’ve seen that before
I’ve already set the neighbours alarm off twice with the backfire! Lol
