Reading all these comments screaming at how fake everything is;how the contrast is too great and everything seems fabricated (because it is)- the whole aesthetic point of the great gatsby is that it's unbelievable; anyone who's picked up the book and read a few pages should be able to see that in Fitzgerald's indulgent writing style. It's splendid, damn near dream like. Luhrman's adaptation of this captures that ethereal sense; and who gives a crap if he used green screen to accomplish it and if it shows? To create physically what Luhrman created digitally in this movie would be damn near impossible and the expenses phenomenal, especially considering the film's production was based in Australia (where no architecture of the type seen in 1920s New York exists, by the way; it would all need to be fabricated/built which in a way, makes it fake). The effects are clean, stunning to look at and all in all pulled off wonderfully. Technology lets us create an infinity of wondrous spectacles; so let there be spectacles. Let there be wonder.
Notice how they all sound the same; it’s all copied opinions. They whine, just to whine. If you read the book, this is exactly what everything is described like. Fantastical, unreal, everything is glitz and glamor, covering up all the darkness that enables it to be this way. Same as Gatsby, a lower class romantic underneath, masking himself as a flawless rich and powerful fantasy he manifested through unconventional and even corrupt means. Everything around this world is about masks, who you present yourself to be vs who you actually are, and the world itself is the same. Gatsby is basically a guy who wanted to be the main character in his own fairytale, it makes sense this is a fairytale looking version of 1920s NY.
This movie was stunning to watch! Everything was brought to life, from the characters to the sceneries, even the smallest props were noticeable and in perfect harmony to the magical dream-like world that was Gatsby. It still remains one of my favorite movies.
+FoxGhost7 I'll tell you how: The CG looks good and all but when most of the movie is CG when its not even necessary, it comes off as distracting. A few scenes would have been okay, but since Baz Luhrmann has a habit of choosing style over substance (and even decided it was good idea to put the movie in 3D), we're not watching a story of characters but rather a movie that says: "Hey look at me! I'm so artistic!" If you like that type of film-making, good for you. I'm just not a fan of Luhrmann's style for directing, that's all. But yes, the cg is better than the Star Wars Prequels...
gabriela vainstoin next time baz lurhman does a movie do not look at the before and after...or for that matter any heavily effects driven film that u like. Still pretty amazing what they did
This film actually makes me really sad, even upset. We look at the people at the very top - they have everything - fast cars, enormous houses and everything they think that they want. At the end of it all, they are not happy. Everything is easy, nothing is to be pursued and nothing more can be achieved. When you have everything, it seems, you have nothing. Lana del rey's voice is chillingly similar to the deep falsity and charade that Gatsby's life is - fake smiles, endless nights of extravagance. Really is a truly saddening and depressing film. But nonetheless what a film it is.
This is really crazy! I never thought about the background scenes being all green screen & illusion. I will definitely be watching this movie in a whole different light now. Like "you know those trees are fake right? Yup. Green screen. I saw a video about it." lol
Such a good movie. I like that they were effects. It adds the the feeling that all of it was too good to be true and it never existed. That's how I feel when I watch the movie. It's depressing but it's supposed to be
this film is just a massive visual effects masterpiece. personally i loved this film. the drama, romance, action and thrill Well done to all involved. cast and crew.
if anyone has seen the TV show "almost human", i recommend it to those who are obsessed with CGI and other visual effects. They were able to use visual effects to create a futuristic city of Vancouver . With the effects they were able to add hypothetical infrastructure and buildings which one may imagine to exist far into the future. If they can use CGI to create a futuristic city out of a present one they can also use it to recreate a past 1920s new york out of the current one.
We were credited in the movie for being a historical resource to Lurhman and his crew - much of the fabric, from the pier, to the Arrow Collar ad, as well as the authentic movies and plays out in the summer of 1923 was sent to them by a series of emails at midnight New York time. We got the gig from having written a book, of all things, on the Queensboro Bridge. They asked us if we could help them create Times Sq in 1923. "If we could do Queens Plaza in 1923, we could create Times Sq." we answered. We never even talked in the phone - all it is just a series of emails. Aussies and Americans think alike in the only explanation I could think to explain how this effort meshed perfectly. Bob Singleton, Exec Dir, Greater Astoria Historical Society
I am crying, this left me speechless, with the craft, imagination, grandeur, complicated mechanisms of imagining, planning, visualizing in the mind before constructiing, creating, giving life. Baz Luhrman is a genius, the cast was astounding and the movie... I consider it a cinematographic miracle. I am happy to have seen this great video!!!!!!
The definition of a great movie set in another time is to recreate something that doesn't exist and put us into a fantasy world to admire or hate. This is absolutely brilliant and I love it.
Wow, I knew they used a lot of visual effects in this movie but I didn't know they used that much with the surroundings/interior! It looks so real! That's amazing! o.o
I think it perfectly captures the book. I have read the darn book three times in one year, and Luhrmann captures Fitzgerald's descriptive imagery so well.
Really amazing ! Something one wouldn't have thought about when watching the film , the effects and music and everything in the film are truly realistic which makes the film soo eye-catching . By far the best film I have seen so far !
amazing movie, amazing casting, amazing special effects, amazing soundtrack. overall, i think this film is a beautiful interpretation of a truly magnificent book.
I never read the book or saw any earleir movie adaptations was completely blown away by this production , From the locations to the costumes , the music and the acting the plot twists . My only criticizm is that it seemed a little long , but I can't see where it could be cut . Maybe where Gatsby gets shot ? I don;t know .
I'm actually really impressed by what *wasn't* done by visual effects. Like those people in the cars? That's crazy! Great choice of song, as well. Not just a piece used in the film, but captures the idea of how much a film like this changes when you remove the special effects from it.
I honestly don't understand why people ask for the name of the song. It could take between 1 and 24 hours for you to get a response. In the meantime you can literally listen to the lyrics and search them on google, or use shazam, or scroll the fuck down.
This is amazing. I wonder how the actors feel about watching the completed movie. The contrast between the bustling CGI-d scenes and actually filming them must be huge.
I'm amazed at the attention to detail, like giving the car a bit more shine. It stylizes the look of the film. I've got to go watch this! It's a shame it hasn't got any jets chasing dirt bikes though...
I'm glad visual effects and post production studios do this. It shows how valuable they are to many films. Disturbing reality that many artists and animators are being undercut and undervalued.
You would think that this would take the magic and beauty out of movies for me...but it actually does the opposite. I love how much work is put into making every shot spectacular, even ones that can be captured in full on camera.
It does make the acting more incredible. But I was more shocked by the planning and foresight and exactness of the production that these effects must require. New respect for film production.
This used more of a "real set" than a good amount of other movies I know of. It all depends on the art style of the movie and what it is going for. They have no way of showing a 1920's America without it being green screened or looking that amazing at least. The point of a movie is to take us to a different time or place, and this does a brilliant job of it.
that perspective completely changes when you take an sfx class and realise how fucking hard it is to make it look real with a green/blue screen behind. lighting and shadows have to be perfect, colour casts have to be removed, and five million tiny details you never thought about in a real life setting that become so glaringly obvious after you've imported it into a sfx program.
I agree with you wholeheartedly; I think what your thinking is that movies using an excess of cgi and greenscreen are distracting and at times have a "cheap" look to them in particular making cgi characters in a live action movie. But in this case usage of cgi in Gatsby was well done.
this makes me miss my NYC trip in 2019 :( I went on top of the Empire State building and now when I see fit in movies or pics I say wow I was literally there :')
It's not that they can't build sets for a 1920's New York, It's just that the scale of everything is impossible to pull of. This movie is HUGE, with sweeping shots over a city that no longer looks the same
If I didn't watch this, I honestly would have thought most of it was filmed at real locations and sets without the visual effects. Absolutely incredible. It's better anyway. CG can't be blown up by jets.
I'll bet you anything that had you not seen this clip, you would have absolutely no idea what percentage of what you saw was CG vs live-action. That's the magic... it's so realistic that it doesn't even matter.
I can appreciate how real some sets are like lord of rings is shot in New Zealand which is beautiful but this is still an art form too and i think they did a great job with it
Yeah. But the fact that they don't is a testament to how insanely powerful special effects are in movies today. It's very convincing and gorgeous at that.
Its funny you touch that subject. I just watched Hitchcock's The Birds and read about how difficult it was to film the scenes with hundreds of birds in them. Sure nowadays it may not seem the most realistic scenes ever but the tough of knowing those were actual real birds or even just physical models/puppets amazes me.
Very impressive, it's amazing how they plan this all out and the detail that makes the scenes come alive
I am still in shock !
orangecode you can tell....
I bet it's absolutely insane to film a movie and then see yourself in these fictional worlds created by computers.
I know right? The actors must have been.blown away!!
this movie is hands down one of my favorite movies

Dido! It is a cinamatic fantastic fantasy - poetic artistic, gorgeous, artistic genius.
yess

The music is so awesome and suits this video.
Because this music was in the movie
Wow, I think this movie is beautiful, everything is exactly as how I imagined it. They even nailed the physical appearance of the characters
Chris H. No they didn't, lol
Perhaps one of the greatest uses of CGI in film history. Absolutely breathtaking.
the huge work done in this movie. When I watch this video I get a goosebumps! incredible
Olga Keles abonne toi 👍☺️
baz luhrman is a genius when u look at the splendor of his work.
Baz Luhrman makes sh*t.
My congratulations to the guys who made the effects in the film. I watched it the other day and had no idea how much wasn't part of a physical set.
Did anyone else get depressed wishing that all this wasn't effects???
+Marcus Ghant HOW??? But they did a lot with real stuff and the added CGI meshed perfectly, compare that to the StarWars prequels.
+FoxGhost7 I'll tell you how:

i love how you put the clip with young and beautiful as the music. the movie soundtrack really fits this video and still gives me he feels ofcourse
At 0:59 you can see that Tobey really misses those times that he was spider man
so funny lol

This truly is so beautiful

I have always found the art of VFX to be fascinating
Wow, I knew they used a lot of visual effects in this movie but I didn't know they used that much with the surroundings/interior! It looks so real! That's amazing! o.o
Brilliant! Great , huge work! So talented people work on this movie!
I think it perfectly captures the book. I have read the darn book three times in one year, and Luhrmann captures Fitzgerald's descriptive imagery so well.

Just watching a car and a green screen turn into something so beautiful, that's as magical as you can get.
You can't knock it though when throughout this movie it's used, and no one would have any idea without a video like this!
The scenes shot in this movie are breathtakingly beautiful.
I never read the book or saw any earleir movie adaptations was completely blown away by this production , From the locations to the costumes , the music and the acting the plot twists . I love seeing these reels showing the different passes
Insane how they made this movie come alive
Wow I had no idea how much of this was CGI! Very well done effects.
Gosh I would love to get the raw footage from this in full resolution to play with.
This is amazing. I wonder how the actors feel about watching the completed movie. The contrast between the bustling CGI-d scenes and actually filming them must be huge.
No amount of cinematography can prevalent the epic tale of The Great Gatsby
this video gives me the chills because of the song, and it fits so well with the video
Absolutely incredible SFX.
Hands down this is the greatest film of all time love the music
This movie was incredible to look at. Especially the busy city streets.
That... was amazing.
It's just amazing that I dropped my jaw watching this.
Gets nostalgia to an era you were never in
I'm amazed at the attention to detail, like giving the car a bit more shine. It stylizes the look of the film. I've got to go watch this!
It's a shame it hasn't got any jets chasing dirt bikes though...
Ive never seen the "green screen" prior to the added effects put forth at the perfect pace. Awesome. Thanks!
I'm glad visual effects and post production studios do this. It shows how valuable they are to many films. Disturbing reality that many artists and animators are being undercut and undervalued.
Simply amazing!
You can tell that this video was made with a passion.
It's a pitty that their hats arent flying while driving at such high speeds
I love this vd so much
Thanks Feel bong, glad to hear it!
What really bugs me is that so much heartache could have been avoided if they WENT THE SPEED LIMIT
Amazing! great song and as making the video :D

80% of the movie is illusion, kkkk
They did a good job, i didnt know the houses were fake.
***** Welcome to the 21st century
***** It would've looked very well in a computer game.
Михаил Литвиненко
You would need a "NASA Computer" for that level of graphics xD
***** Every movie is an illusion... That's the thing with movies, it's an illusion

Stunning
outstanding visuals
Gatsby's mansion is the director's old high school in Australia.
My whole life has been a lie
This song is amazing, best song ever. Pulls at my heartstrings.
What a great movie!!
It plays at different tempos throughout the movie, amazing if you watch it
This was very beautifully done
There are no words!!!
I agree with you wholeheartedly; I think what your thinking is that movies using an excess of cgi and greenscreen are distracting and at times have a "cheap" look to them in particular making cgi characters in a live action movie. But in this case usage of cgi in Gatsby was well done.
Visually a stunner. But this movie doesn't have much more to offer.
Young and Beautiful.. wow... breathtaking
the best movie of the year!
does anyone else think this just makes the acting more incredible??
I don't care for this movie, but the music is BEAUTIFUL!
this makes me miss my NYC trip in 2019 :( I went on top of the Empire State building and now when I see fit in movies or pics I say wow I was literally there :')
I really enjoyed watching this... very cool
Are we to take from this that Dan is a big fan of this movie. This makes me very happy since a adore it
I think he sent us here because of how beautiful this is. :P
Absolute awesome, just amazing how they could weave reality with imagination
Awesome... Speechless...
that actually makes a lot of sense, since cut-scenes in video games look better than playing the game in real time.
It's not that they can't build sets for a 1920's New York, It's just that the scale of everything is impossible to pull of.

Kubrick was beyond movie industry... So ahead of his time.
so tom's house is all visual effect? haha poor tom
So is Gatsby’s
I'll bet you anything that had you not seen this clip, you would have absolutely no idea what percentage of what you saw was CG vs live-action. That's the magic... it's so realistic that it doesn't even matter.
I mean yeah alot of CGI but wow , you have to be amazed the world they created is fantastic . I felt like i was in a trance watching it
I can appreciate how real some sets are like lord of rings is shot in New Zealand which is beautiful

If I remember correctly, this looks, scene for scene, almost identical to the 70's version with Redford and Sam Waterston, Mia Farrow, Bruce Dern.
