- If you've paid a visit to our NY or LA showrooms recently, you may have noticed the newly expanded audio sections. We created these displays so that our clients could go hands-on with a variety of microphones, mixers, and other audio equipment before deciding what fits their project best. Since we all know that getting audio right in the field can sometimes be a challenge, it's always important to make sure you're using the right tools for the job, like the Sound Devices MixPre-D field mixer.

Why did you set your lav mic input as line level, instead of mic level?
Hi there - can you explain why you'd want/need to have an encoder knob that switches between the audio being processed through the camera or mixer? wouldn't you always want it set to "camera" so you know how the audio will actual sound on the video file?
Hello Michael,
Mixers give you the option to monitor the return from the camera as well as the mixer itself. The logic being that if there were an issue with audio you can isolate the problem to the mix or the camera. Return from camera also gives you the confidence that audio is actually being received by the camera. - Ian
Is this something you can use without the camera?
Yes you can, you can use it as a stand-alone unit on battery power. It takes 2x AA batteries, or you can power it via the power connection to an adapter or V-mount battery. The unit is no longer produced, and not easy to come by. You could have a look at a MixPre 3 (24 Bit) or 3-II (32 bit float), which also have the option of internal recording and be used stand-alone too.
