I just find it strange you have to BUY a GPL license. (that is the only license mentioned in the video) Is that even legal? Or do you mean you donated to them? Or is there some other license you talk about? If there are multiple licenses, it sounds more like open core, NOT open source. (nothing wrong with that, I use bitwarden) Why do I care about that? Because it is not honest to use open source as pr, IF in reality it is open core. (I honestly do not know, that is why I am asking for clarification, but I do see the like from FUTO, without any objections against you calling it open source in the same sentence as you say you BOUGHT a license)

I found that the keyboard struggled with swiping and the voice was okay but not great. I had to begrudgingly switch back to Gboard. Has the futo keyboard gotten better?

I'm pretty sure y'all heard, simply by asking for donations that software like thunderbird and KDE plasma have exponentially improved their funds. simply asking for it is enough for a lot of people to consider paying for it and frankly I'd love more foss software to have donation screens because that is how foss will thrive.
I'll be honest, I would've payed MORE for Immich, and Voice Input. At each checkout, I was looking for a "Tip" option, because I believe you guys deserve it. Keep up the good work in 2025.

I absolutely love how Futo is selling their software, provide it without purchase, but ask you to purchase. this allows a person to evaluate the software, then purchase it if the software provides the value expected, and it allows futo to provide software for free but reclaim some of that money and hopefully return a profit. i downloaded the futo keyboard a while back but was unable to pay for it, today ill be purchasing that software, thank you futo, the futo team and thank you louis

I paid for all your apps. You chose a very difficult, but the right way - thank you guys for bringing back faith in honestly made software. I truly believe that the time will come when an honest man sees an honest wage, but the road there will be bumpy and difficult. Somehow I feel that big tech will repulse more and more people in the future and technical literacy will become cool again.
I have paid for the futo keyboard. It's wild that I paid for a keyboard app. I never buy stuff unless it's a cracking deal. But I believe in futo. That's why I parted with my hard earned cash. I want to pay for Grayjay too, but currently it's too broken for me to use daily. I'd be happy to pay for grayjay too. Just waiting now
i've paid for my grayjay license thinking of it as an investment rather than a working product, unfortunately the youtube blocking is strict enough that i find myself using grayjay as an RSS feed and watching videos with an external app. in my case i do not sign in to my youtube account as i fear it might get banned if i link it to the grayjay app, and i am always using a vpn. not being able to uninstall the extra video sources the app comes with is also very annoying as i am always being notified of updates for them even though i am not using them.
I love so much to be finally able to dictate text to my keyboard without the thought of someone listening to me, that I don't care if it takes more time than a "cloud service" or if I already had the full keyboard experience after having downloaded it from the FUTO store, I paid it anyway because I would love to see more of this kind of offline software, as I would love to have back the model where I buy the license for my product that remains mine.
For me the speech to text in FUTO is even faster than google. And more reliable because it doesn't rely on internet. It's been great to see this grow into a great app.
I was a very lucky K-12 student. Got both my 3rd/4th Grade *and* middle school science teachers two years in a row as well as being among the first cohort of classes in the opening year of a spanking brand-new middle school building. Thank you Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Poling for being the some of the most forgiving and supportive teachers I've ever had 🥰😁
I want to say my piece on this, I heavily believe that if im able to get functioning software for free and use it to do what i need, no matter how little, or to know if it even fits in a personal workflow, its like an extended lifetime trial, In life i believe that personal goals come first, and to do that in most cases everyone needs their portion of cash to get through in life, in time people see things improve around them and finally get a chance to reflect, Personally if a one time purchase is a set price, I likely dont argue if it does the job, but when i use something that has helped me out to a certain extent, im that guy who will dump 1k when the time is available, i think its some sort of "You help me i help you" approach, for me as a traditional working class guy, thats a good chunk of change, but as you said, its about sending a message, and when many of these projects often have reasonable goals its kinda hard not to.
Immich is brilliant. It also gave me the motivation to finally digitise all of my old family photos. It's something I wanted to do for a long time, so anyone in the family can browse through the albums, but I never felt comfortable with hosting personal photos on somebody else's server.
I tried to pay for the keyboard a few months ago and had some issues completing the payment. Not sure why. This was the reminder I needed to try again. Purchase complete. Thanks Louis, and thanks to FUTO as well. Immich is next on my list of projects.

I bought FUTO on the strength of your involvement with it. For anything that's not a proper noun, your keyboard gets voice to text 99% right - better than Alexa or Google. The one issue I had with your keyboard on release is that it didn't support a split mode for tablets - and you added that. The only other thing that even slightly bothers me is that it doesn't understand when I'm trying to add punctuation (I say period and it types the word "period" and not an actual period) but honestly that's such small potatoes that I don't care that much. Keep on keepin' on.
Immich is probably the best free software I've ever used if you weigh in the simplicity of setup, simplicity of use and feature parity with proprietary alternatives.
I hope FUTO recognizes how lucky they are to have Louis. Appreciate him sharing his valuable experience and thoughts on the situation with Immich and Open Source finances. Would be interested in hearing a breakdown of how Immich has been doing financially. :)
Typing this on the FUTO keyboard on my old Android phone that's too many versions behind to serve as more than a video player. I admit, I wouldn't pay for the keyboard in its current state because it's not good enough, certainly not in my other two languages besides English, but I want to keep an eye on it and maybe help it along in other ways like statistics and feedback until it is a useful keyboard. I believe in FUTO and thank you for making the effort for open source software.
Quality open-sourced software is of greater benefit to the Human race than the actual software benefits to individual user. You are at the beginnings of something great. Good man.
Love the FUTO brand, ethos, and most importantly the PRODUCTS. They're SO good, even in alpha I had switched to daily driving the keyboard, Grayjay is the ONLY way to consume video for me anymore and I happily have forked over money for each product and try to push them online because they are great and i believe in them.

When the keyboard first came out, I went to pay, but the payment portal wouldn't work. Now I see that it works, but it would be one of the must expensive app I'd purchase at $20. The fact that the company isn't $#/+ makes me inclined to still buy it.
Here's something that I'm confronted with a lot: I care deeply about software freedom and make good money now. So I'm very flexible when it comes to the prices I'm willing to pay or donations I'm willing to make, but often left wondering how to best estimate what I should spend because companies and communities are so intransparent with regards to their finances. If you told us (roughly) what the team costs and how far off you are from breaking even, I might be willing to pay 120 bucks just for the keyboard. As things stand, I just paid what you asked, but I suspect there are a few guys like me.

Hi Louis, do you have thoughts on the impact the new EU software liability regulations might have on Immich, now that it's being sold as a commercial product? AFAIK there are exemptions for non-commercial software and such but Futo is going out of their way to actually sell Immich instead of accepting donations. How liable will you be the 1st time an Immich bug will lead to data loss for a professional photographer that can demonstrate revenue loss? (EULAs won't help if they're in contradiction to the law...)
Paid for the keyboard, and unfortunately, as someone who speaks multiple languages on a constant basis, I had to switch back to my previous one (Swiftkey from MS). I already contributed as much as I could on Github with Issues/comments with as much depth and advice as I could. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to contribute code-wise, but I hope my small 'donation' effectively works as a signal that I wish this software gets the features that I need in order to: A: use it myself. B: recommend it to literally everyone I know.
This is awesome, just need to continually push the message and let people know about this movement. Big tech gets away with so much because of its continual marketing and messaging.

Please make an easy FUTO 3D modeler specifically for 3D printing. There is nothing out there for the average person not into CAD. Think Microsoft 3D builder or TinkerCAD but more FOSS and I'll pay!!! (I purchased most FUTO stuff already). I just wish I had more time to make it myself, I barely have time for my own open source software...
in future please integrate indian UPI payment option to futo software and also grayjay shows payments as 830,00 the ',' instead of 830.00 with a ".", could this be fixed.
And no doubt there are more droves of people willing to pay when they're convinced the app is here to stay. All too often well intended apps are abandoned and early adopters are left high and dry. Of course this happens just as often with closed source too! In other words, keep going and don't stop!!!!!
I am yet to get around to deploying immich on my own server, but I have only been hearing great things about it from others. I've just brought my server license. I hope to put it to active use soon :) Stupid question: Is there any reason I should bother to actually place the license key in my instance?

I have bought futo Keyboard and Grayjay though I haven't bought Immich I haven't gotten around to building a home server PC. Plus, I've never really needed it. I just always sync important images the old-fashioned way. However, when I have some extra money, I think I'm going to buy the server for immich Just to support you and to have it and hopefully that's an excuse for me to buy and build a server PC. Also, I know you've probably heard this from me, but I really hope you put Grayjay Desktop on the Steam Deck as a verified app. I will buy Grayjay again when the desktop app becomes stable and is available on Flathub. And I hope to buy it again on Steam. Also, what is Futo Pay? Can you give us a little tease?

Maybe it's time to say "GREAT-grandmother" when making reference to the tech-challenged... The majority of grandfolks these days are GenX, and they grew up alongside the growth of personal computers. They've been there every step of the way from the Commodore64 and Apple IIe with huge floppy disk drives that would take 20 minutes to load Frogger, to the speedy beasts we have today. Most of them have written their own programs and built their own computers at some point in their lives (and were even made to learn DOS in school), even if they don't have the patience or time to do it anymore. As for cellphones...heh. GenX went from rotary phones to "base" phones to mobile bag phones (that had their own SHOULDER STRAPS) to handheld cellphones. These aren't new-fangled gadgets to them...they built and/or bought each new iteration as it was born. Personal computers and cellphones wouldn't be where they are had GenX not so wholeheartedly embraced and enthusiastically invested cumulative *years* of their lives and much of their income into the technology. So when the folks of today are handing their phone to their grandma, most likely grandma is going to be a GenXer that has an even *better* phone in her pocket, and she'll be in front of a computer that she either cracked open and upgraded herself, or she dug around the registry and ripped out all of the bloatware and spyware before it was an hour old...or both. :) Or maybe just pull the age aspect out of it completely and use the perfectly applicable term "luddite". And of course Louis, than you for everything you do, and thank all the folks working at and with FUTO for all that they do. Y'all rock.

Can't wait for a Linux distro/DE developed by FUTO with real UX in mind
I bought FUTO on the strength of your involvement with it. For anything that's not a proper noun, your keyboard gets voice to text 99% right - better than Alexa or Google. The one issue I had with your keyboard on release is that it didn't support a split mode for tablets - and you added that. The only other thing that even slightly bothers me is that it doesn't understand when I'm trying to add punctuation (I say period and it types the word "period" and not an actual period) but honestly that's such small potatoes that I don't care that much. Keep on keepin' on.

Immich is probably the best free software I've ever used if you weigh in the simplicity of setup, simplicity of use and feature parity with proprietary alternatives.

Typing this on the FUTO keyboard on my old Android phone that's too many versions behind to serve as more than a video player. I admit, I wouldn't pay for the keyboard in its current state because it's not good enough, certainly not in my other two languages besides English, but I want to keep an eye on it and maybe help it along in other ways like statistics and feedback until it is a useful keyboard. I believe in FUTO and thank you for making the effort for open source software.

Love the FUTO brand, ethos, and most importantly the PRODUCTS. They're SO good, even in alpha I had switched to daily driving the keyboard, Grayjay is the ONLY way to consume video for me anymore and I happily have forked over money for each product and try to push them online because they are great and i believe in them.

After you have Immich setup you can purchase a license in the lower left of the Web UI.

When the keyboard first came out, I went to pay, but the payment portal wouldn't work. Now I see that it works, but it would be one of the must expensive app I'd purchase at $20. The fact that the company isn't $#/+ makes me inclined to still buy it.
Here's something that I'm confronted with a lot: I care deeply about software freedom and make good money now. So I'm very flexible when it comes to the prices I'm willing to pay or donations I'm willing to make, but often left wondering how to best estimate what I should spend because companies and communities are so intransparent with regards to their finances.
If you told us (roughly) what the team costs and how far off you are from breaking even, I might be willing to pay 120 bucks just for the keyboard. As things stand, I just paid what you asked, but I suspect there are a few guys like me.

hey louis, i was wondering if a grayjay web app is being considered or in the works already, i like grayjay desktop but it feels weird to install an app for that purpose, usually these services are web apps 😅 for sure i'm not the only one wanting something like this

Hi Louis, do you have thoughts on the impact the new EU software liability regulations might have on Immich, now that it's being sold as a commercial product?
AFAIK there are exemptions for non-commercial software and such but Futo is going out of their way to actually sell Immich instead of accepting donations. How liable will you be the 1st time an Immich bug will lead to data loss for a professional photographer that can demonstrate revenue loss? (EULAs won't help if they're in contradiction to the law...)

If your business that has any kind of significant operating cost breaks even in the first year. That would be considered an overwhelming success.
Paid for the keyboard, and unfortunately, as someone who speaks multiple languages on a constant basis, I had to switch back to my previous one (Swiftkey from MS).
I already contributed as much as I could on Github with Issues/comments with as much depth and advice as I could.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to contribute code-wise, but I hope my small 'donation' effectively works as a signal that I wish this software gets the features that I need in order to: A: use it myself. B: recommend it to literally everyone I know.

Please make an easy FUTO 3D modeler specifically for 3D printing. There is nothing out there for the average person not into CAD. Think Microsoft 3D builder or TinkerCAD but more FOSS and I'll pay!!! (I purchased most FUTO stuff already).

in future please integrate indian UPI payment option to futo software and also grayjay shows payments as 830,00 the ',' instead of 830.00 with a ".", could this be fixed.

And no doubt there are more droves of people willing to pay when they're convinced the app is here to stay. All too often well intended apps are abandoned and early adopters are left high and dry. Of course this happens just as often with closed source too! In other words, keep going and don't stop!!!!!
I am yet to get around to deploying immich on my own server, but I have only been hearing great things about it from others. I've just brought my server license. I hope to put it to active use soon :)

I have bought futo Keyboard and Grayjay though I haven't bought Immich I haven't gotten around to building a home server PC. Plus, I've never really needed it. I just always sync important images the old-fashioned way. However, when I have some extra money, I think I'm going to buy the server for immich Just to support you and to have it and hopefully that's an excuse for me to buy and build a server PC. Also, I know you've probably heard this from me, but I really hope you put Grayjay Desktop on the Steam Deck as a verified app. I will buy Grayjay again when the desktop app becomes stable and is available on Flathub. And I hope to buy it again on Steam. Also, what is Futo Pay? Can you give us a little tease?

Maybe it's time to say "GREAT-grandmother" when making reference to the tech-challenged...
The majority of grandfolks these days are GenX, and they grew up alongside the growth of personal computers. They've been there every step of the way from the Commodore64 and Apple IIe with huge floppy disk drives that would take 20 minutes to load Frogger, to the speedy beasts we have today. Most of them have written their own programs and built their own computers at some point in their lives (and were even made to learn DOS in school), even if they don't have the patience or time to do it anymore.
As for cellphones...heh. GenX went from rotary phones to "base" phones to mobile bag phones (that had their own SHOULDER STRAPS) to handheld cellphones. These aren't new-fangled gadgets to them...they built and/or bought each new iteration as it was born.
Personal computers and cellphones wouldn't be where they are had GenX not so wholeheartedly embraced and enthusiastically invested cumulative *years* of their lives and much of their income into the technology.
So when the folks of today are handing their phone to their grandma, most likely grandma is going to be a GenXer that has an even *better* phone in her pocket, and she'll be in front of a computer that she either cracked open and upgraded herself, or she dug around the registry and ripped out all of the bloatware and spyware before it was an hour old...or both. :)
Or maybe just pull the age aspect out of it completely and use the perfectly applicable term "luddite".
And of course Louis, than you for everything you do, and thank all the folks working at and with FUTO for all that they do. Y'all rock.

Of course i would pay 100$ for an immich licence... Just imagine if they came up with crap like "3.99$ a month subscription" that would be 3 years. I plan to use this forward for way longer than that. And I really love your "just test it illegally for however long you want and then pay for it" mentality.
