Really interesting and important video. I'm a geographer and I've been working with GIS for more than 10 years and in many industries, it is really nice watching a woman talking about our field like you do!
Really interesting and important video. I am a researcher on land resources carrying out studies using gis and remote sensing for producing thematic maps regarding the above issue. For example, producing soil map, land use and land cover map, vegetation maps ..etc. I have been working for more than 12 yrs continuously. It was exciting video. Finally I have to prepare myself to apply for the job.
I really liked watching your videos and listening to the advice you provided, im currently pursuing my A.A. in Environmental Science, and I really look forward to transferring to a BS in Geosciences (:
I viewed this well after your live showing, but want you to know I find this - and your other videos - valuable. On paper I probably qualify for some GIS positions, but it has been 12 years and I am currently making every effort to learn and catch up so I can use this for my eventual career path. Thank you for what you've presented and I hope to see more!
@@KatieScheurer Yet I see a pattern I would like to discuss: Why the heck is Esri still so popular in the US? I mean in Europe it's quite a good alternative for many GIS users... but I don't see similar things over there in the US....
Digital Geography that is a discussion. I think there are a number of factors. One is because they are based in the US so it was easier to sell here. Also they integrated themselves in universities and government originally so those that were graduates were bringing Esri knowledge to their new organizations. Also Esri is integrating themselves into our K-12 school systems which further promote the association of GIS with Esri. It is also hard to reproduce their enterprise products with something else and still be cost effective. Esri has many flaws and is not always the right solution. But they are hard to compete against.
Thanks so much for this. My dream job is to be a Transit Planner. I feel like adding this GIS education under my belt will make me a better candidate. I already have a masters in Transportation. And cant wait to finish my coursera courses to get the cert.
4 years in the field, with my masters in GIS this past fall. My contract ends in September, and I'm not getting any work. Could use some tips. Thank you
Hello Madam ! I just recently resettled to Minnesota I am becoming a new US Citizen .I have about 10 years of experience in GIS and Remote Sensing . I used these skills into mining industries , Agriculture industries and Municipality . I would like to work on GIS or Remote sensing . beside that, am also having some software experience like ArcGIS Desktop, ENVI, SNAP , ArcGIS Online and Google earth engine . but now Iam completely confused . Do US companies hire me ? , Do they accept my qualifications and experience? what is your recommendation ? thank you .
You will need to look into internships Rn i am planning on working as a delivery driver for a sandwich shop for 2 years to show i am reliable on top of my knowledge, then will start taking summer jobs, until i come across a remote job i like.
Also done degree in geology and currently enrolled in post graduate diploma in GIS,how can I improve practical work in GIS for freelancing and online project as well.
Katie, thank you so much for the videos. I have a degree in geography and I am going to study GIS, and your channel is so helpful!

The certification is great. If you want to blow them away you need a good digital portfolio to show you can do the work.

Find out what people are advertising for. Look at job descriptions and products you see being utilized by industries you want to work with.
