The echo coming over Vias mic is almost more asocial than just hearing nothing from them in response, because with the echo you know you're being heard and that the other person hears it too
I figured, surely he somehow has voice turned off, right? Surely VR Chat isn't filled with distressing mute character models that stare deep intro you, saying nothing. But then the voice echoed. Somehow I'm now even MORE anxious about ever trying it.
As someone who's played VRChat for a short while, it is a bit awkward at first. It's like showing up to a new place, there's the cool kids, (usually using full body tracking, sitting in front of a mirror listening to music.) There's the edgy kids that run around in weird avatars, trying to crash your game. But there is that cool group of people, who get on, just to talk and meet others. My words of advice on making friends on there though, remember that it's just a game, if you mess up and emberass yourself, you can always leave that group of people, and just shake it off. You'll rarely see people again, and even if you do, they usually forget what happened and move on. Good luck though.

There's certainly lots of cool amd fantastic things to see and do in VRChat! The community is dying to due developer neglect *and abuse* but they'll likely move to ChilloutVR or another social game so that's where the action will be soon enough
