  • How to prepare a screen for screen printing using photo emulsion and diazo sensitizer included in both Jacquard Products' Professional Screen Printing Kits. From mixing and applying the light sensitive emulsion through burning an image and rinsing the screen, all aspects of preparing a screen are covered. In a second video we will demonstrate screen printing.

    We recommend mixing up the entire bottle of emulsion. Once mixed, you should store it in a cool, dark place. If you store the emulsion in the refrigerator, it will stay good for several months at least. The hotter it gets (and if it is exposed to too much light), the faster it will expire.... I hope this helps!

    Good question! Just stir well and you're good to go. The act of laying it on the screen will bring the temperature up.
    Hope this helps!

    The sensitized emulsion is good in the bottle for at least a month. Keep it refrigerated or in a cool, dark place, and it can last much longer than that.

    Unless you plan to use the whole amount of emulsion within a 3 month period, divide the 8Oz of the photo emulsion in 4 different containers as well as the water-dissolved sensitizer so when you finish one container, you still have 3 more to use not worrying about expiration times. This way you always have fresh new emulsion even 2 years after you purchase it.

    We're glad you enjoyed the video and are happy to answer your question.
    It really does only take about 10 - 30 seconds in the sunlight. The variation in time takes into account time of day, time of year, clarity of the sky, etc.
    We'd love to see what you print! Feel free to share on our Facebook page as well.
    We hope to be posting many more videos here soon!

    I use a 250 watt halogen work light.(can buy it at lowes or Home Depot) and I expose works up to 24 x 24 for 6mins with no problem. I put the light about 24 inches above the screen to be exposed. I'm using diazo emulsion to coat the screen( this is emulsion that needs to be mixed)

    @ashDgreat007 Drying time very much depends on ambient temperature and humidity, however, unless it is very cold and damp in your drying area it should take between 30 and 90 minutes. I've found placing a fan in the dark room where I dry the screens speeds the drying time.

    Lyellong, it is not recommended. The sensitizer works as a catalyst for the emulsion, allowing it to react to light much faster. It is possible to burn a screen without the catalyst, but your exposure time would be MUCH, MUCH LONGER. Using the sensitizer allows for more practical screen burning times...

    did everything as instructed mixed, coated screens, burned image to emulsion everything came out nice on 160 mesh, I did test print test print looked good started printing T-shirts and emulsion started dissolving in fine lines then after fourth t-shirt bigger lines start sawtoothing around edges used 5 screens to do 15 t-shirts This emulsion does not hold up with using speedball ink. Sorry But i have to call it like i see it.

    I am having some difficulty with applying the emulsion to the screen. In the video it smooths out nicely, when I try it seems to soak in and not really spread, no matter how much I work at it. The first screen I tried making had a lot of runs after it dried. I'm wondering if my mesh is too wide (110) or my screen isn't tight enough (hand made). I'm using a speedball fabric squeegee to spread the emulsion.

    • @jacquardproducts
      @jacquardproducts  8 років тому +1

      +Anthony Ball sounds like you might just be applying too much emulsion. The idea is to use as little as possible and to spread it as far as it will go on the screen. Excess emulsion should be returned to the jar. Use the squeegee to work a small amount of emulsion, spreading it as much as you can before using more. If the mesh isn't taught enough, you may have trouble. The screen in this video is also a 110 mesh.

    • @hatelongusernames
      @hatelongusernames 8 років тому

      +jacquardproducts My second screen went better, but I had to scrape and scrape and scrape to spread it around thin enough. Every video I've watched shows people effortlessly spreading the emulsion but mine seems to be very stubborn. Maybe I didn't use enough water in the sensitizer (though that seems like an awful small amount to make a difference)

    • @jacquardproducts
      @jacquardproducts  8 років тому

      Anthony Ball are you using a Jacquard screen, Speedball screen or another brand?

    • @hatelongusernames
      @hatelongusernames 8 років тому

      +jacquardproducts it is homemade and hand stretched. I had wondered if tension may have something to do with it, it's pretty tight, though
