Boss comps have never been my favorites, the CS-3 is just as average as it gets. The CS-2 was a more musical circuit, but I think it was also modified during its original run, so you have to search a bit if you want a good one, I think. 2nd place is the Forcefield. The Boss CS-3 hands down. I've blown more money than I can count on other expensive compression/sustain pedals and I always come back to the Boss CS-3 everytime. It is the smoothest compressor pedal on the market.
Thanks for making this. What I was hoping to hear was a single string - bending a note and holding it out as long as it will go. That will tell how useful a compressor is in a solo situation.
Rothwell have a fantastic simple compressor that isn't based on one type alone. It is called the Love Squeeze pedal. The Tone Corset sounds great here. Edit: I bought the Tone Corset and OD Glove. They sound great together. Thank you
Had a break from UA-cam because of life but very happy to see youve done this. Always love your comparisons and your dynamic playing really suits a compressor comparison. Listening to compressors and hearing attributes change is a skill in itself and is a good way for people to hone their ears. You can really tell the changes in character of attack, and more importantly release here. Longer release is great for lead but as times gone on ive learned to appreciate more energetic compressors as i play much like you and I like it when they get out of the way quicker. All the best for the new year from North Wales Uk!
I think the blend function for compressors is a must (for me it allows to dial a compression that I don't need to turn off when using with distortion), so the only one here that I would use it's the Tone Corset.
I bought the Behringer years ago for 25$ new. Have bought 3 “higher end” compression pedals to replace it. I still have the Behringer. Pedals that cost 4-5 times as much ended up on Craigslist. But I’ve got high hopes for the Philisophers Tone by pigtronix. Until then, that Behringer pedal has been superb.
I’m not much of a fan of the Philosophers Tone. I have the full sized (5 knob) one, and find it a bit fiddly and don’t care much for the drive control at all (which seems to end up in the mix even at zero). The pedal does have its fans- it doesn’t get that squashed sound. I recently got the Safron Squeeze by Way Huge and like that a lot. While it does have the same number of controls, three of them are kind of auxiliary. Plus it is very, very quiet.
For me it's very hard to hear the difference. Which mean they're all about the same. But for more in depth review maybe consider running a looper and quickly switch between pedal?
I made a list of affordable compressors that have the “blend” knob. I couldn’t find a good comparison between them, and it would be really cool to see them side by side in a video. I’ll leave this as a suggestion! Joyo Pipebomb vs Nux Komp Core Deluxe vs SanJune GB-CP vs EHX Tone Corset as a comparison. Your videos are great! Keep it up!
Funny, when I saw the topic I was hoping you had the Joyo since I bought one a couple of years ago and I’m quite happy with it. I’ve paid hundreds for some pedals over the years (POG2 I love you) but I have no problem with low price pedals that do the job. This is a great series, thanks!
Analog baby...analog....no need for a compressor that's not analog. The empress effects analog compressor would be my number one choice but I have a tone corset for now due to the price point. Compressing with digital is the worst
I have the Nux Masamune..check it out. I just bought a Behringer for my friend as a gift. Playability and price is often what beginners need in a pedal. Sound quality and over paying comes later.
I found my CS-3 too be much noisier than the Behringer CS 400 which is basically the same circuit (see JHS pedals channel, What is up with Behringer pedals?) So the CS 400 occupies the compressor spot on my pedalboard. I own a vintage Ross and an old MXR dyna comp amongst my collection. The tonal differences between the Boss CS-3 and the Behringer CS400 are negligible .
@@oyabunthelastsamurai2550 If you will add multi effects I don't know for now... You can try anyway, if it works after or before the comp., just trial and error. But basically the ideal thing is the signal chain I wrote above... If there is multi effects/processor maybe guitar > multi effects > overdrive > comp > ampli...try it
Is true bypass crucial? Depending on your rig a buffered pedal early in the sigNail chain, such as where most players use their compressor is often a benefit in terms of signal loss.
I'm thinking about getting a compressor simply to sit in my effects loop. There are a couple videos here on UA-cam that show what that does but many of you may already know. When you're distorted it makes your pick attack super punchy then drops in volume for the rest of the note. It sounds just like a tube amp cranked to the max and sagging. Just awesome. You guys think just the cheapest crappiest compressor is fine for that? Anyone out there tried?
I am new to the compressor, it's my understanding that you want to put it early in the chain before your dirt pedals and then I read some people put it after ?? IDK
CS-3 all the way; Forcefield afterwards; Tone Corset if nothing else is possible; Behringer... Oh, well. (get an EMG active, perhaps) Excellent video, mate!
I have always thought compressors were a bit of a con trick. The perceived wisdom is that they improve your sound but I think it's more a case of the king's new clothes. Nevertheless I went out and bought one-----the much celebrated Keeley Compressor Plus. It made hardly any difference and was no better than any of the ones in this video. I quickly sold it.
It depends on what you’re using the compression in order to achieve. A compressor can also have a great effect on other effects. Regardless, compression is not a “con trick” in any sense of the phrase. However, the vast majority of people who purchase compression pedals have little understanding of their function, and often don’t even notice when the effect is effective. A compressor isn’t going to benefit novice guitarists, or even some “intermediate” players. But compression is one of the more important effects to people who use it correctly/usefully.
Try the Joyo Avallon..a very cheap budget pedal... I had so many compressor pedals as i play a lot of heavy funk etc..but this one is definitely up there with someone the high end ones..
Maybe if you'd use headphones you'll be able to hear how much squash and how the pedals affect the low end & high end....sustaining is a completely different setting and not the aim of the test....if your goal is to sustain notes well it doesn't matter how the pedals will affect the tone, you just need it to sustain.........
