He could have refused to represent the guy once he knew he knew the victim. He did not do it so I don’t blame dawn and Billy for being angry. Ethan has no excuse to feel he is wronged in anyway by Billy. He was twisting what Billy was saying to make it seem Billy was being racist to him. I would be angry at Ethan as well and saying he cannot choose who he represents as he was called by the judge as he is as on the register (a list of lawyers who take on free legal aid cases) is not 100% true. He knew full well taking on the case was a conflict of interest and saying it is not is a lie. If there is a conflict of interest or you don’t feel safe with a client or have too many cases on your books you can say you cannot take the client on.
The legal system is rigid and wouldn't let a conflict of interest to effect a court case. Soaps tend to forget the legal system to make a storyline. The meena court trial was debacle because a judge would overturn a jury's verdict if he thought that evidence wasn't used to make a verdict.

This is an important storyline two Black men on opposite sides. Billy is really hurt because he thinks Ethan another Black man should be able to understand. Billy actually has a point about Ethan. In North America Ethan would be called an Oreo Black on the outside yet white on the inside. Ethan sees himself as a respectable Black man. But Billy has a point it doesn't matter how educated a Black man is the judicial system is racist.
This storyline came out of nowhere but this has real-life consequences involved. Ethan should be man enough to reject the case of defending the racist who brutally attacked Billy. It'll only make his life and his career a lot harder whilst continuing to defend that racist thug.

Im all for tackling racism in terms of things like Billy's beating. However it feels one sided in terms of colour. Have you noticed that every racism storyline that's been aired its always a white person viewed as the aggressor and racist. Think we need to balance it out, if it was the other way around in terms of colour backlash would be envitable, even though it shouldn't be. If your going to tell these racism stories tell it from different people, not just a white person being viewed as the racist or aggressor. On that note Ethan is in a no win position he has no choice has he can't select who he wants to represent.

Conflict of interest would never allow someone to represent someone against someone they know.
