- BILL BRUFORD'S EARTHWORKS
Montevideo, Uruguay
Ballroom del Hotel Radisson Victoria Plaza
Keep Walking Jazz Tour 2002
Sep 27, 2002
Bill Bruford: drums
Tim Garland: sax, clarinet
Steve Hamilton: keyboard
Mark Hodgson: bass
His drumming is so hypnotizing... And listen to the amount of sounds he gets out of that one drum kit.
Lovely stuff. And Bill's drumming just flows. It's beautiful. So fluid!
He talks like a musician and plays like a musician; he just happens to be a percussionist. Bravo, Mr B!
I thought his solo [starting at around 29:30] was an absolute delight - full of ideas, dynamics and surprises. 🙃
Bruford is such a mathematical drummer yet manages to both swing and have his own unique approach to the instrument. One of the greats.
His playing is so effortless!
Maestro, gracias por compartir. Saludos desde Perú.
Hipnotiza por su sincronicidad matemática y sentimiento que le aplica a la batera
I really don't understand why anyone thinks it's a good idea to place interview footage on top of the music performance. It's like the director decided that it's instrumental so it must be okay to use as background music. Infuriating.
I suspect that a big part of it is to reduce its bootleg value.
@@cuzned1375 - Yep. I've added some🦉to my Comment🐿️for the🐌same reason. 😁
Smooth as butter. Complete mastery of technique allows him to flow unconsciously into the music with infinite ease and grace. You must master the technical aspects of your instrument before you can abandon technique and just EXIST with others in a state of constant creation. Glad Bill found some equally talented musicians and a less ringy snare drum sound.
The ONE and ONLY!!
i caught earthworks at their last u s gig at catalina's in hollywood,i threw a towel at the bass player right before a drop of sweat was going to hit his eye,and mouthed "catch". after the gig i told him good catch!
a sanitary towel ?

Lol
🌿simple excellent🌿🌊
Josh, the first one I think is "Revel Without a Cause", from "The Sound of Surprise" album and "Footloose and Fancy Free" live.
Too bad more people don't get this!
OMG he was flying that night.
Errrr…..? Talking over the music ?
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Yep. It does kinda spoil things. But... as someone else has already said in the Comments, it's most likely done to deter people from releasing bootleg copies of the gig.
Oh, what a world we live in... 🤭
This band was pure joy to watch and listen to....
Seen Bill 3x in my life ....Crimson '82 Earthworks '85 and ABWH '89. All three times he blew me away. He was like a metronome in his timing, and he did it all with his wrists it seemed. He wouldn't spill a cup of tea balanced 6 inches away! Betcha the guy has NO joint troubles, or ''rotator cuff issues''. xD
Hello everybody: the piece that runs from 23:58 to 34:55 is "The wooden man sings and the stone woman dances", with "The drum also waltzes" solo included. Plus, Mark Hodgson's bass solo starts with a phrase of that same piece. Enjoy!
Thank god he went back to an acoustic kit
I saw them in San Diego around 2008?. Tim Garland was on Sax, and he stole the show. I was expecting to be blown away by Bruford but he was just happy to let the other guys shine. Thanks Bill. And thanks for posting this video. My father was with me, and he has had a stroke since, so I don't think he remembers this. I'm going to show this to him and see if he remembers.
Hot band. Bill's always been a favorite of mine but I hate to admit I never checked out his Earthworks band before. My chagrin over my ignorance is large.
Nice to hear Bill play jazz He was a lecturer at ACM where I studied drums and he spoke about the artistic difference between a product or a process. Very thoughtful and inspiring person.
Great Players fusion they are in the zone, I'm a drummer also this is it.
Tim Garland was amazing.
Tracks I can identify, in order:
"Revel without a Pause"
"Bajo del Sol"
"Modern Folk"
(unknown, anyone know what this one is?)
Drum Solo (The Drum Also Waltzes)
"Triplicity" + bass solo, poor guy
“Tramontana”
Su instrumento se proyecta en él como una parte mas de su ser, por éso no le cuesta nada hacer lo que hace. Por y para siempre Bill.

Come. To my. School some. Time. Love. You. Bill 😍
my very favorite drummer of all time. . . .
notice that in this rendering of 'The Drum Also Waltzes' the central kick/hat theme is in 5..
Bill Bruford maestro!
One of my favorite drummers of all time
They played in Brazil on that tour too, but I had a gig that night too and could not go. One of the things I most regret in my life.
which gig was better than anything by Bill?
@@igorrodrigues97. It was my gig. I was playing. I had no choice. 😢
the problem with upright bass, he's playing his ass off, and still buried in the mix. unfortunately, to be heard well, he needs to play electric.
Humpty dumpty - chick corea, bob berg, steve gadd and eddie Gomez is the only jazz recording that comes to mind where an upright bass was mixed nicely to me, check it out
Godamnnn what is that first song they play in 5? I wanna look for more versions and learn it for my jazz band
All the sudden Jazz is my boss...
Do I see some Max Roach here ua-cam.com/video/uZ4-NGx_GD4/v-deo.htmlm36s?

Fantastic
The shame is that U.S. jazz radio plays little, if any European jazz. A great pity.
Excellent as usual
Bill !!!
Superhero !
YES.
Sorry, no setlist.
🌪What need be said....
Boisterous Bill🌞
do you know the setlist?
