I saw him in Greenwich Village at the Gaslight in the late sixties. No offense, but you must listen to Kate and Anna McGarrigle's cover. It's so much better.
This one might seem like just a silly ditty, but it gets to me every time. It's about the end of summer, the end of childhood, and the end of innocence - which I guess is a tender subject for me, because I continue to refuse...
This is such a classic by Loudon Wainwright, seemingly light-hearted but really with the emotional depth of the ocean when you consider it as a kind of existential metaphor for a man trying to survive against great challenges and also having fun as a tie to childhood that has been lost. What a couple of excellent talents joining him--so surprising and enjoyable.
RT was there to JAM!!! I'm completely blown away every time I see him play already knowing just how good he is, yet, every time is a like a first time all over again.
Looks a lot like the Beall Hall, Eugene, OR. Never-the-less, a great setting for a great artist. Loudon is always best taken in at the smaller venues where the intimacy of the performance can really be experienced. Very, very nice.
Loudon was a fantastic lyricist, but, musically, he was slightly more than a YMCA camp song leader. I can only imagine how impatient a sophisticated instrumentalist like Richard was getting (you can see it in his face).
@@alanhowell3646 No shade on Loudon. Simplistic songs can be arranged beautifully. Nic Jones transformed this song into something sublime. Even a masterfully done song, like "Bee's Wing" from Richard, is, at its core, nothing overly complex.
I'm a simple man. I see a version of the Swimming Song I haven't heard before, I click.
He's a walking dad joke, but he also writes the most beautiful, poignant songs that bleed love, grief and nostalgia. He's the most relatable genius.
THIS COMMENT YEAHHH
He is likeable and talented and did mention Australia so it is a massive tick in my book!

@@eugenedegeorge5084 Have you heard the recorded version?
@@edeledeledel5490 If you're referring to the one on their first album --yes.

There’s a great songwriters circle with Boo Hewerdine - thoroughly recommend
Spot On! 👍
Richard Thompson as accompanying guitar. It doesn’t get any better.
Thompson's being a fan ,looking over at Louden. Amazed he, just how specially gifted this Yank is.
Happy Birthday Richard Thompson, gifted guitarist and legend in his own right. Fairport Convention 🎸
@@tommcdermott4575 I'll be damned ANOTHER Great Aries!!! Happy Birthday Richard
It's quite funny that everyone in the audience is scared to clap after he caught them out the first time.

Super. I love Richard Thompson’s guitar work.
Yes, true words re RT. Beautiful, subtle interludes; understated, never flashy, but just GOOD!!
I have all his albums signed by this legend
Amazing song!!!!
Looks like he's having so much fun!
Och, so grand to see RT on this!
I don't even like swimming! I love this song though!
I can't swim. I thrash, then I sink😅
A good song, by a good dude.
I wish this would trend in people’s UA-cam’s feed

How to bond with an audience.
Let’s not forget this is as much Kate McGarrigle’s song as it is her ex-husband’s.

A YMCA camp song leader 🤣🤣🤣…

As of Sept 17, 2022 Loudon is still alive. Talking about him in the past tense gave me a fright.
@@AlexiHolford My apologies. I don't know why I had it in my head that he had died.
A trio of top-tier songwriters right there. And if you haven't seen Loudon in the film Big Fish, you are missing a treat.
