"This feels like the arc where the villains win." That's EXACTLY what the Shibuya Incident is! Its the turning point of JJK from a mostly lighthearted action anime to 'please make it stop. stop taking these characters from me'.
Regarding the final blow in the fight, and some adaptation info: the JJK manga always had a narrator, but the anime only started using it now in the Shibuya arc. Apparently, it was Gege's wish that the anime didn't rely so much on it as the manga does, and that was possible until now (narration was adapted in S1, but usually through a character speaking or thinking). From Shibuya onwards, it's almost impossible to imagine an adaptation without it, really. Still, the anime only used it when strictly necessary. The whole thing Mahito did before being hit is explained in the manga: basically, his form briefly switching back to the original was bait. He made it look like his form was cracking (like what happened a few seconds before), but the change was only visual (using Transfiguration). Yuji falls for it and aims his punch there. Mahito is almost able to counter and kill him, if it weren't for the second hit of Divergent Fist.
I personally feel like Sukuna COULD respect Mahito if he had time to mature and evolve as a curse, but at his current state didn't. Mahito isn't the same kind of egotistical as Gojo and Sukuna, or even to a lesser extent someone utterly enraptured by their own cause and willing to die for it like Jogo. Toudou Aoi's worldview. In other words, domain expansion. Well, normally, domain expansion involves projecting one's worldview into a barrier and forcing it down while fighting, but Toudou Aoi has dispensed with barrier techniques. On top of that, instead of barrier techniques, he uses his own body itself as the boundary of the barrier, granting himself the maximum effect of domain expansion. As it only works on attacks that press his own body against them, it only has an advantage against simple attacks, but it also works on Mahito as a strike that interferes with his soul. Moreover, Mahito comes into contact with Toudou Aoi's innate domain through domain expansion, and the deep connection of love between Itadori and Takada-chan is forcibly transmitted to his brain, leaving him confused and unable to understand it. It's as if he is getting the same effect as Gojo Satoru's Infinite Void.
Except you're reaching and it isn't a domain expansion, this whole daydream doesn't even exist in the manga. Mahito got distracted with the pendant and then Todo just used this oportunity (that's also what actually happens in the anime too)
Anykne can do a Black Flash, but Yuji's a genius at it, even doing itnon ourpose this time. Todou baited Mahito into thinking someone would switch places, all to give Itadori a chance to hit him. Todou's IQ is off the rooftops (most goes into imagining hyper-realistic Takada-chan saving him, and just the necessary bit into actually planning the fight)
Also the talented animator who animated the Todo scene where he dances with the idol was only 16 years old, and he apologized for making that scene because people accused him of having Todo "cross dress". People are so crazy sometimes and he should never apologize for this masterpiece he's contributed to
A couple videos ago you asked if there was another villain in anime that matches the audience hatred as much as Mahito, I think Light (Kira) from Death Note is probably one. Not sure if you've seen it but If you have a chance, I highly recommend watching it. It's a mystery/thriller so it'll be nice change of pace to what you're currently watching. It's really good!

1:43 "I think I just need to plow through these last three episodes and just see what actually happens ... so many things unanswered" Yeah, about that, great plan but... You know... Gege things :D
So an interesting point regarding the Sukuna and Mahito interaction is that Mahito was at an equal level to Sukuna here whereas in the past going into Sukuna’s innate domain always had him towering above. This likely ties into what Sukuna said to Jogo that him not attempting to open a domain expansion because he lost previously to Gojo was a ‘losers spirit’ whereas Mahito despite knowing the outcome previously from opening his domain expansion against Yuji did it again by taking a gamble with the way he opens it which separates him from Jogo’s ‘loser’ mentality. By doing this I feel like Sukuna looking at him face to face was an acknowledgement of Mahito having a greedy mindset that Gojo wants Megumi to adopt. Another little fun fact if you look at the animation carefully when Mahito lands his 2nd black flash you can vaguely see the outline of the soul he mentioned.
Nothing you said was wrong at all and I agree completely except I feel like the mahito “at an equal level” thing with sukuna is more metaphorical then literal since mahito is objectively weaker than sukuna. Not sure if you meant that literal or metaphorical but just wanted to put my two cents haha
Imo the reason Yuji needed to monologue there was to instill that idea of fear into Mahito. Yuji knew that Mahito will come back in some form, all curses do. Yuji might not be there next time. At least that's how I see it
20:30 YES THANK YOU i'm tired of people defending this scene. Trying to justify gege's plot hole when in reality this is just bad writing YUJI PLAY TOO MUCH
It may be a Hot take, but aside the battle, I feel like the anime cut some of the things that made this part of the story top tier. When Todo slaps Mahito's hand, he thinks about shortly before about how boogie woogie has one last secret, which is a nice callback to the Hanami fight, and it creats hype. And when Getwo shows up at the end of the episode, he's first shown as a big bad Black Wolf, in contrast to Yuji's White one. And it helps solidify how low Mahito truly stands: after all his big talk and shenanigans, he's nothing but prey for the actual hunters in this jungle.
The satisfaction we all felt in THAT scene…
The hunter became the prey.

Nothing you said was wrong at all and I agree completely except I feel like the mahito “at an equal level” thing with sukuna is more metaphorical then literal since mahito is objectively weaker than sukuna. Not sure if you meant that literal or metaphorical but just wanted to put my two cents haha
Smart, literally smart.
Todo is literally me lmao 🗿
Now we just have to wait for the next part 😭😭
Imo the reason Yuji needed to monologue there was to instill that idea of fear into Mahito. Yuji knew that Mahito will come back in some form, all curses do. Yuji might not be there next time. At least that's how I see it
geto gonna help him really really well😂😂😂
I think when Todo clapped, Mahito threw a blow behind himself expecting him and Yuji to switch sides.
Flexie became yuji when he hit mahito she wanted to do it herself so bad 😂
20:30 YES THANK YOU i'm tired of people defending this scene. Trying to justify gege's plot hole when in reality this is just bad writing
YUJI PLAY TOO MUCH
Nanami called Mahito a child. And when Mahito was defeated, he acted like one
Cant wait for the next episode :)
Tbf Yuji put literally all his cursed energy into that final black flash, so there wasn't much left in the tank to actually finish off mahito.
if geto wasn't there he would most definitely finish off mahito
22:52 Like a kid, He is a kid
if we notice his actions he is like kids getting exited & crazy on little things
Woww have been waiting for this 😍😁
lmao..no matter how much jjk happened to you but your intuned
Yuji cannot use domain expansion as he doesn’t have an innate technique, he can only use CE
Next episode will be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Mahito saying he might as well be wishing him happy birthday implies he was a cursed womb all this time and still was this dangerous
He was never a curse womb. He meant it as since he’s “awakened” with his new power up, that he should wish him a happy birthday
He wasn't a cursed womb, the different form also was just a hardened shell
