I built a pallet greenhouse too. I also wrapped the bottom in plastic and found it did two things. 1. Stopped most of the airflow into the greenhouse wich is important. 2. The moisture gets trapped in between the plastic on the bottom and pallet wood. Can cause mildew and mold issues. Also you may want to consider adding a exhaust fan blowing out to pull the heat. That thing will get real warm in there
I almost put the pallets on the plastic, I wish I did only because we just moved and I cant move it right now due to it being frozen to the ground. Adding an exhaust fan is a good idea.

Kudos for designing and building your own! My ex and I argued for years about greenhouses, and after the divorce, I was free to do as I chose. This summer, I hope to build my 7th greenhouse. My first house was 12' x 24', and was built over 2 green hemlock raised beds. I used a jig to bend 3/4" EMT for the bows...still standing after 9 Maine winters.Total cost, including skin was $250. Over time, I figured out ways to all but eliminate wood, and I started using fencing top-rail (and a hoop bender) for the hoops, and line post to set them. The 2 biggest houses were 12' x 60' and the only wood was for the door frames. They were for an ambitious school garden project, and the cost was just under $1.000 each (about half of a kit cost). It's great to see people doing stuff!

I am from UK and I need idea how to keep optimum temperature as I am thinking of growing finger limes and warm climate crops / fruits in it all year round. I am looking at the possibility of using solar water heater but already had moans from the companies- it can't be done. I already have solar water panel on my wall giving 24/7 hot water without gas/electricity and i want similar to the green house but for heating. And can't word is not in my vocabulary. you or your subscribers come up with the idea, I would be grateful to hear it. thanks again for inspiration...
Thank you for sharing your story, I love it. Since I live in Alaska I am not going to even try to heat my greenhouse we can get down to -30F/-34C in the winter. Not sure of your Latitude or how long the sun is up but I have seen a solar heater made from soda/pop cans but that will not work at night. There is a rocket mass stove, but you would need to feed the stove wood. Using black poly tube coiled up with compost on top of it, used to heat water for a thermal heat mass. The most costly (money and work) would be an earth battery but a power source is needed to run the fans. Hope some of these ideas give you some ideas. Thanks again for sharing your story.
Very nice. My husband made a round pallet fence to hold our chickens, ducks, and one rabbit. But I think it's gonna be too hot for them. I dare not tell my husband to move it to a shadier location. Thank you for making this video. I'm looking to start going to a local store which gives out free pallets so I'll definitely start gathering them up to use for this sort of project. The way that you do it makes it look so much easier than if I were to go with my idea of disassembling the pallets, which runs the risk of breaking them. This way, they're functional, and the best part - because I know my roommate won't be on board with this, I can cover up the fact that they are pallets by adding siding to the outside of the walls and then nobody would even know what it's made of but me - and whoever I decide to invite inside. Maybe I'll even make a pallet floor, clean up the inevitable sad bits, and add some insulation and a floor someday and it'll be my tiny house. I'm not sure. It sounds fun. And spending the night out there every so often couldn't hurt. Again, thanks for the video. I can't wait to get started on this future project. Best to all.
Nice pallet greenhouse! Don't worry about the paint since it will not be touching the plants. Maybe you can stuff straw between the pallet for insulation and cut down any wind drafts. Let us know how this working out for you at your new place. Cheers
By level of awesome....you mean they won't allow you to build a big wooden trash pile in your backyard? I can understand that... If i were your neighbors and i saw you doing that crap i'd turn it in on the count of it being an eyesore....
Excellent project, affordable and easy. My son and I dug a 12 X 22 hole in our (also tiny) yard we went down about 6'- originally it was because our electric got shut off and we had a huge crop of (Totally legal) cannabis we needed to save from darkness. Hard times can be an excellent teacher. If you dig a deep trench in yours it will help stabilize the temp cooler in summer--warmer in winter. Some folks do bore holes 10' to 12' deep 8" wide with plastic drainage tube liners, I think it does the same thing.
Thanks for commenting. Here in Alaska, the ground temps in the summer are in the high 30's low 40's at least that is the water temperature coming out of the faucet is. The angle of the sun would not allow the sun to get to the plants if they were in a hole. We moved the greenhouse to our new place last year and I did not get a shelf built to put the plants on and they were very lanky. I had them on cender blocks.
@@RusticByNature,Wow, Alaska! I'm in Michigan so yeah, way different. You would need a much bigger yard and angled walls to get any kind of sun in there.
Sir this is an absolutely wonderful build. Thank you, I could see myself building one or two here in the UK. Thank you for the idea, enjoy! Love the very neat effect with the wallmart bags. Great recycling!
This build was awesome to watch, thank you for sharing! I just started my own compost bin about a month ago, it's just in a barrel right now but once I move I'd like to build a bin out of pallets. Maybe one day I'll build my own green house, too!
Rustic by Nature: I used pallets for my "composting" walls and I found that after a year, they showed good deal of decay and deterioration. Perhaps your greenhouse will hold up better because it will not get rained on. My concern is that your pallets touch the ground and that is where I found the most decay because there was no insulating or protective barrier. After all the work you put into this project how has it held up in the last year? By the way, it looks great. I like the benches raised off the floor.
Hey, looks great! I'd love to know how the green house is holding up, 5 years later. Also, would love to know what you'd do differently if you were to build this again. Slainte and Happy Growing!
I’m glad I inspired you. I live in Alaska where the winter temperature can get to -30 so I don’t worry about heating it. I use it to extend the growing season and to keep it warner during the summer when the temps are around 65 degrees all summer. This summer though has been a little different due to the extreme heat we have had. Its been in the 80s and 90s. When it gets into the upper 70s most Alaskans start complaining it’s too hot. lol
What a great idea. Wish you the best of luck. Wish I could do this one. But my landlord is really strict and fines us if there is one little weed in the yard.
INSTACRUISING I agree people are stupid . I believe the ones that dislike wonderful videos like this , sit on their asses all day and don’t know how to have a good time with themselves and their families . And support their families !!!
opps also the Tempo is 24 by 20 some huge i got this Idea an in the fall an winter makes a great place to store things his has it door an window air an I also have a water system connected and also to use electricty for music while work so i still find your system a great one also thanks for sharing oh I use green house plactic also
I know this might be late, but I also notice that you said you were in Alaska, but give this some thought... Why not insulate the pallets with 2" foam and in the style of a stucco building for warmth and cosmetic looks?
Not too late. 3 weeks ago we moved so we will be taking apart the greenhouse (once it's not frozen to the ground) and then rebuilding it. I will be making some changes. For the cosmetic, we have talked about fake log look. Thanks for watching.
Great idea for a greenhouse. I'm sure you're going to get a tremendous amount of pleasure using it. It looks great and the walmart bags are a great idea. You should add a small fan connected to a thermostat for exhausting the hot air to the outside. Install a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
Yeah... Alaska is like.... the opposite end of Florida for the US... No one gives a shit about it and kinda just keeps it around for its revenue of landscape. If it weren't for that and it's tactical advantage we wouldn't give two shits about that god forsaken place.
@Time4Truth Obviously not. I agree. It's stunningly beautiful! So it's cold in winter & has a short growing season. It also has great people & maybe the best fishing anywhere - or used to. Sheesh...What a dumb & pointless remark. I'm not a big fan of Florida, but it has it's own kind of beauty & value. Too bad it'll be swallowed up by rising oceans though. That's sure gonna be a disaster once thousands of miles of roads & buildings going up the coasts around the world, end up getting submerged. I feel so bad for sea creatures already, with so much plastic, spilled oil & dumped barrels of toxic chemicals dumped by industries, decades ago, now rusting out. Sorry for the doom & gloom... Lovely greenhouse..
@@joeincogno265 How old are you? I've seen the coastlines changing in my lifetime & now Arctic melt, & loss of snow cover on the Himalayans & other areas has accelerated. All that water has to go somewhere. At the same time available fresh water for humans, livestock & other human activity is diminishing. If we could build more desalination plants around the globe, maybe we could strike a balance. Unfortunately, the process is very costly, & at this point, requires using fossil fuels, & most oceans are polluted with plastics & nuclear plants jlike Fukushima just keep dumping their radioactive nuclear waste in the oceans, & deadly, often radioactive fracking fluids keeps seeping into groundwater, destroying our limited potable water, in order to to try to capture more natural gas. So - we need more people paying attention to how our global resources are being used. Denial, or ignorance is part of the problem. By burning so much fossil fuel, there's more CO2 in our atmosphere. We breathe oxygen & exhale CO2. Left in an airtight room, eventually all the available oxygen would be converted to CO2 - even if there's just one person in the room. It's just a fact. Look at coastline maps. Research parts of the world where people have had to leave their homes & relocate. Look at houses falling into the sea as the coastline has encroached so much in other areas, people dare not stay in their homes during hurricanes. Look at ancient maps & you'll see the way the continents used to look. We live on a volatile planet, & the climates have ever been changing, but now we're able to see how our use of fossil fuels, plus the fact that there are now around 7 Billion people on the planet, & we've been clearing trees so we can build cities & factories & roadways & there are greedy people clearing out the rainforest which we must slow down - to preserve the kind of atmosphere we need, to continue to have rain water in the way we've always had it as long as humans roamed this planet... Human greed will end life on this earth as we know it & our govt & other govts are letting it happen. Maybe the Billionaires don't feel rich enough yet. Then there are those who believe these are "The End Times", so don't care about trying to manage our resources for future generations, since they think that god will be taking them up to heaven & they don't care if the greedy industrialists destroy every single beautiful landscape & every tree & every reservoir of fresh, clean water. It's our complacency which allows them to destroy this planet.
It's great that u put plastic on inside to cover the pallets, but u put the wood directly on the ground...it'll rot faster like that, no moisture barrier.
How is this greenhouse holding up?....i see the video was shot in October 2017. And we are now july 2019. Was it difficult to get the snow off the roof? Would you change or modify this model in any way?
The first winter it did great, I would just go out a shake the snow off. The second winter the plastic was doing good until we hit the -20s, the cold and wind tore up the plastic. Last summer I did put vents at both ends because it was getting up to 120 inside. I have plans to upgrade the roof to a more durable material. Thanks for watching

Americans....Have always an creative projects and making wastes fully useful, my respect to you all...
Sir this is an absolutely wonderful build. Thank you, I could see myself building one or two here in the UK. Thank you for the idea, enjoy! Love the very neat effect with the wallmart bags. Great recycling!
A the start of the video I thought, oh dear, by the end I thought not bad at all, well done !
You are not the first to say that. Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely brilliant
What a cool idea! I like it.
My HOA would already cite me for having pallets. Nice Green House. Wish I could build it.
Good video, and good job! You’r planing is just as nice as use of materials. Keep going
and you'll have a full size farm.
Very cool. I love the pallet idea.
Thank you.
Stumbled upon this exactly 2yrs later lol Memorial Day weekend lol
Hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for your comment.
This is awesome! Can you update us on how the greenhouse held up over the years?
This build was awesome to watch, thank you for sharing! I just started my own compost bin about a month ago, it's just in a barrel right now but once I move I'd like to build a bin out of pallets. Maybe one day I'll build my own green house, too!
I want to build a compost bin also, but it seems like everything just goes to the chickens. LOL I am glad you enjoy our video, Thanks for watching.
its a great idea , i did not think making a green house out pallets , but look like a project now , thanks
Wade Rue thank for watching and commenting.
Exactly 2 years later!! How creative. 5-27-19
So cool Thanks for watching.
beautiful Mine is built with a Tempo just had to all put plastic over it an brace everything but love this one you make here great ideas also
Looking good. Great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you
Nice Work, Came out Really Nice...
Watching this on Memorial Day weekend 2 years later!
Me too... Didn't even do it on purpose. UA-cam recommendations and all.
I was wondering why the big jump in views and comments, Thanks for watching.
Thank you for watching.
Loved your project, I have a massive garden, I need a green house you have answered my prayers, ( I have lots of pallets) 👍your are a 🌟✅
looks great!
Thank you.
Awesome! Even material list! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching.
Awesome build! I'm going to have try that! Mine will be smaller...but wow! You inspired me! Thank you.
This is a great idea and thanks for sharing!
WOW l dont live with snow so l didnt think you could have a greenhouse in that sort of weather. what a great idea. very clever TFS
Rustic By Nature this is a great video awesome work...
Thank you.
@@RusticByNature It's a pleasure you Rock
Hey, looks great! I'd love to know how the green house is holding up, 5 years later. Also, would love to know what you'd do differently if you were to build this again. Slainte and Happy Growing!
Just found your channel this is a cool build
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Such a great build
Thank you
Great idea, however if you set it directly on the ground, you're inviting rot and termites.
Excellent work , very ingenious.. loved it.. enjoy growing..
Thank you I'm going to build me one how do you heat itt
I’m glad I inspired you. I live in Alaska where the winter temperature can get to -30 so I don’t worry about heating it. I use it to extend the growing season and to keep it warner during the summer when the temps are around 65 degrees all summer. This summer though has been a little different due to the extreme heat we have had. Its been in the 80s and 90s. When it gets into the upper 70s most Alaskans start complaining it’s too hot. lol
Nice use of reclaimed materials, might treat the pallets with linseed oil or another natural varnish when it's dry, I like the mandolin music rock on.
Great idea!
Thank you
What a great idea. Wish you the best of luck. Wish I could do this one. But my landlord is really strict and fines us if there is one little weed in the yard.
Awesome work!! I don’t get those 176 dislikes. People are so weird sometimes.
Yes, a lot of weird people in the world. Thanks for watching.
INSTACRUISING I agree people are stupid . I believe the ones that dislike wonderful videos like this , sit on their asses all day and don’t know how to have a good time with themselves and their families . And support their families !!!
What a great idea
I enjoyed the video. Great idea for a green house. Nice job. With 4 people yould would be able to finish the green house in 1 day.
opps also the Tempo is 24 by 20 some huge i got this Idea an in the fall an winter makes a great place to store things his has it door an window air an I also have a water system connected and also to use electricty for music while work so i still find your system a great one also thanks for sharing oh I use green house plactic also
I know this might be late, but I also notice that you said you were in Alaska, but give this some thought...
It looks simple and efficient. Thank you for sharing this wonderfull idea and method.
Thank you for watching.
Awesome re-purposing Bro! Good job all around & shine on
Thank you.
Great video, thank you for taking the time to build and the one to teach.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Great idea for a greenhouse. I'm sure you're going to get a tremendous amount of pleasure using it. It looks great and the walmart bags are a great idea. You should add a small fan connected to a thermostat for exhausting the hot air to the outside. Install a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
When I realised what you were going to do I thought oh no! but it turned out awesome.
LOL, Thank you.
Outstanding job! I enjoyed your video so much. I learned a lot. Great idea using the pallets.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
For future information, its called a "top plate". 😁😁😁😁 Great idea using ratchet straps.
LOL Thank you.
I saw a peek of the mountains in the background. I would love to live near a view like this. I'm from south Texas! Its flat down here.
We moved from Kansas, so we are no stranger to flat land. 😊 Thanks watching.
"huh. A pallet greenhouse in a little suburban neighborhood? How'd he get permission for that?"
"Ohhhh, he lives in Alaska."
LOL Thanks
@@cherylanderson3340 roads and buildings getting submerged. LMAO!
@@RusticByNature What did change the material to after?
The best assistant ever!!! Looks good!🌻🐝🍯
Thank You, She loves to harvest what we grow.
I love this idea! I plan on building a chicken coop this style as well. I will be making videos as I go as well. 😊
Loved the interruption haha made me laugh pretty good.
This is such an awesome end result!
Thank you. Look forward to your build.
Awesome project mate looks superb well done!!!
Thank you.
Can you explain the rain gutter watering system? Also does that water leak through the Walmart bags?
The soil mixture will wick water up from the rain gutter, so I don't water from the top just from the bottom. Thanks for watching and commeting.
that turned out lovely....
Oh dear, That is a hell of a fire risk so close to the house plus pallet wood will rot very quickly. Hope all goes well!
We have since moved and moved the greenhouse to our new place and I do plan to put gravel under it, Thanks for watching.
great job ! Ill be stocking up on pallets
Thank you, I am hoping to buy so more very soon.
