I can't sleep as cold as that. I wake up in the night cold even with lots of clothes on and blankets. I found stopping fluids two hours before bed helped with middle-of-the-night trips. I think that made a huge difference to better quality sleep. Caffeine has minimal to no effect on me. But for years I wake up at 3am whether on holidays or working and no stress.

3am wakeup can be a liver issue. Liver support may help!

Dear Dr. Sara, I have trouble sleeping for a long time and I want to change my sleeping cycle. I am healthy due to my exercise and eating habits but unhealthy due to my sleep. when I do not get enough sleep I feel my head is lighted. I have heard that if we sleep at the time 22.00pm-02.00am. it's the time that our body released the growth hormone. is it true? how the body knows that? what if you get 8 hours sleep but from other times like from 04.00am to 12.00pm, will the growth hormone released? what if you travel to other time zone? will the body recognize the clock/time zone differences? looking forward to hearing your reply. Best regards, Jimlim

so sorry if it is there and I just don't see it. But can't find the download of the sleeplog. Thanks for the information. I wonder about how you find out how you are slow metabolizer of coffee. It it the liver function test, and different liver detox pathways?

My problem is not lying awake--I usually can go to sleep easily and I don't usually wake up in the night, but when I get up in the morning, I am horribly achy and groggy. I can barely function for the first half hour or so. It seems to me that I sleep well, but somehow my mornings are not so good. If I sit back down in my recliner, I can often sleep for another hour or two even if I slept an eight-hour night. If I can't go back to sleep, I'm okay, though, once I get through the first fog.

Did you say you'd send the download for the sleep log onto this video page or just on the book purchase page? Thanks much for the great info and tips. I know my family will be anxious to see the results, so will I. Thanks again.

I think I have tried everything out there but pharma drugs which I refuse to do. Stress I am sure is one problem with getting the right kind of sleep. However what is the relation of good sleep and estrogens. I was on a higher estrogen before moving and this Dr lowered it by more then half and sleep went with it. I have gotten her to go back up to half of what it was but still not sleeping. I do drink a cup of coffee in the mornings.

As a Health Coach, I totally agree with what Sara says and would add that wearing blue blockers at night help your balance of cortisol and melatonin if you are still going to use your ipad, mobile etc in the evening and they also help with the effects of the electrical lighting on your cortisol/melatonin balance; and as a Mind Body Psychotherapist I would say address your stress: not with positive thinking or will power, distractions or something else, but find a skilled person to teach you new ways of facing, resolving and integrating what is affecting you.

Ambien was a godsend for me and has been (gasp) for 15 years. Before ambien I had 3 nights of no sleep in a row. Since then, that has not happened again. I know the exact amount to take to get me to sleep (more than 5 mg) and I have no complaints about it. It is free ($1) with my insurance. It may be too much for some people and they have a choice to not use it. When I have happened to run out, I have to resort to Unisom or some other harsh over-the-counter med that hardly works and again, is harsh on the stomach. There's no way I would sacrifice sleep to virtue signal about not taking sleep meds. That's just me. And, I have NO complaints about my sleep when I take ambien! I wake refreshed the next morning and not drowsy, which is not the case with OTC meds. I take the IR and not the extended release. I simply break the pill for how much I need.

Sleep... Ah yes. Well, I went thru the worst time of my life- waking every 1.5 or 2 hrs. all night long.... Wired and tired was me. What caused this terrible disturbance?
I received a 3am phone call that my beloved father had passed. Since that incident, I have now been able to regulate my circadian rhythm 2 years later.
Can u talk Dr. Sara about how trauma effects our sleep( and the entire body) and how to deal with it???? It was not easy for me.
    I love u by the way!!!!💋

same kind of thing happened to me. i've done everything, from feng shui, yoga nidra, relaxation type videos, asmr videos, or having the tv on while i sleep. trauma actually does brain damage, I think diets with a focus on brain health are important to trauma recovery. being around supportive people is very helpful. i tried several therapists, but generally got worse after talking to them, searching for a therapist is not fun, you get psychiatrists who want to drug you up, minimize trauma, say you're depressed, and therapists who haven't read a book since 1980, it was too much for me. therapists on youtube are a lot wiser and less threatening. i've watched a lot of peter levine's videos, and read his books. also martin seligman, and plenty of lesser known therapists have a youtube presence. i like steve andreas and eric wolterstorff. well, there's a lot of experts for trauma. hope you are doing ok. 3.5 years since my traumatic experience and I am sleeping 5-6 hours a night, sometimes more, without sleep aids.

It's funny but when I had little ones I read the Ferber books, not to use his method but because they have so much great information on sleep. (Still nursed and slept with my babies cause it felt more right to me) but I honestly struggle with taking care of myself that way I take care of my three girls. This is my year though and I hope to kick a few bad habits with "The Hormone Cure" . I am guilty of the ipad since I love to read to relax but I'll try to kick that, plus the coffee. Working on cutting back slowly since I am addicted. Ironically I was caffeine free during all my pregnancies. Sigh, this is my year! My girls want me around a long time and if I want to be the best Mom I can be I need to do this finally.

TCM actually breaks down our circadian cycles with our major organs' detoxification starting at 10 PM till early dawn, around 5am. Then Yang energy peaks until noon. It's sobering to learn how ancient wisdom is now verified by high tech, cutting edge micro- nero- biochemistry! Thank you healer of new era!

of course steroids help but refuse to use them any more......it keeps me awake at night, is worse before my period, not conducive to a healthy sex life as it is a turn off for both me and my husband and I feel tired most ams because of the restless sleep, would be curious if you had any thoughts on that? Thanks!

Could you please cite the mentioned research on coffee? What if you sleep but don't feel rested in the morning? It seems like there's "sleep" and then there's "profound sleep", with the later leading to more of a feeling of being fully rested. Thanks.

I have a question about using melatonin--I have just started using it at night (3 mg plus theanine) and I am sleeping so much better--not waking up around 3-5am for up to several hours. My husband also cut way back on his alcohol consumption in the evenings and his sleeping is so much better (much less snoring and apnea) so I am sleeping better because of that, as well. I do wake up still feeling like I could sleep a lot more, though. Will I ever feel totally refreshed when I wake up?

  • @labecksf
    @labecksf 11 років тому

I echo Claire's question about melatonin. I am in "that" age range and 2 months ago began having sleep issues. In the last two weeks, I have cut out caffeine, upped my intake of good foods, limited or cut out the bad foods and have lost 5+ pounds! :) But I'm still not sleeping. Moments before your email with this video arrived, I decided "Forget it! I'm going to just take Simply Sleep for a week and get some quality sleep"
but I'm nervous now about sleep aids - and wonder about melatonin

Thanks Dr Sara, I love your candidness re alcohol and I for one am listening......I love my red wine at night but am finding my sleep quality really affected by it, so am going to cut it out. Another issue I have and do not know if it is related to alcohol is extreme perianal itching, been going on for years, doctors do not know what it is, been tested for parasites etc and given steroid creams to help it, ....to be continued on next post
