  • Joseph Henry, not Samuel Morse, invented the telegraph. With the possible help of a black assistant who was restricted from publishing (and beaten for his "impudence"), learn why a bored math teacher would invent the telegraph and why he didn't profit from it.

As usual, the amazing music is from the fabulous Kim Nalley.

At least he had the SI unit of inductance named after him.

Henry was Princeton’s first super-star professor. Henry house is right next to the main gate and Nassau Hall. Unfortunately none of Henry’s original experimental equipment survived and had to be recreated much later.

While Morse may be popularly credited with the invention of the telegraph, I only credit him with creating the first encoding system that bears his name. The telegraph was worked on by so many people before him that the idea was old news by the time of his demonstration.
Another point on Henry, he has an electrical unit named after him thanks to the vast improvements he made upon others work.

Yes, the inductance of coils of wire is measured in Henries, H, mH, etc.

No he didn't, there lots of different types of telegraphs before him with Sir Frances Ronalds credited as inventing the first working electric telegraph in 1816, decades before Joseph Henry with his early doorbell.

I think that there may have been an earlier functioning electrostatic telegraph.

There was, and I mentioned it in my next video, but the basics of the telegraph used in the 1800s was invented by Henry.

Well, she tells Morse's story in the next video: we can make our own minds up once we've heard it - he's unlikely to be offended 😉

You say he treated a black person like a child, the way most whites treated such people. I think you are assuming this prejudice. White people did not all treat black people this way. In the Old Testament, Moses married a black woman and Moses's sister mocked this marriage. As a result, God gave her leprosy, which is a super-white skin condition and Moses had to ask God to heal her. This shows that treating blacks as inferior was recognized to be evil even in the days of Moses.

Having a theme song that just repeats the same word over and over at the beginning and end of your video is extremely annoying. It's not a cute song, it just gets stuck in your head, and so I will not be watching your channel, even though it was good otherwise. I'm not exposing myself to that kind of psychological warfare that tries to force things into my mind by repeating them over and over.
